Instrumentation Flow Plan Symbols and Recommended Drawings : a Standard System for ORNL Instrumentation Applications Work

This report is presented in order to provide a satisfactory system of symbols and identifications for process-instrumentation equipment and to promote a uniformity of practice that will simplify and expedite instrumentation work. It is intended that the systems presented here should be capable of designating and identifying the multitude of instrumentation items which are used for control and operation of conventional processes, as well as for specialized work peculiar to ORNL. Instrument Society of America standards have been adhered to whenever practical.

HRP Radiation Corrosion Studies

A fifth in-pile loop experiment, L-4-8, was completed. The loop operated in-pile for a total of 1637 hr, during which time the LITR energy output was 4377 Mwhr. The average fission power in the loop based o cesium analyses was 622 w when the LITR was at full power (3 Mw). Based on oxygen data, the generalized corrosion rate for the first 300 hr was 4.0 mpy; the rate for the remaining 1357 hr was 0.7 mpy. The nickel data gave parallel results. The corrosion of the type 347 stainless steel, Zircaloy-2, and Ti-55AX [unintelligible] exposed in the core and in in-line holders was generally consistent with that observed in previous in-pile loop experiments. Some differences with steel were attributed to the fact that this was the first loop containing steel specimens operated with 0.04 m H2SO4 present in the uranyl sulfate charge solution (0.17 m UO2SO4, 0.03 m CuSO4). Stress specimens, made from the alloys Zircaloy-2, type 17-4 PH stainless steel, and Ti-C-130-AM, were exposed in care, in-line, and pressurizer locations. Microscopic examination and average weight loss gave no indication of effects attributable to the stressed condition of the specimens.

Preliminary Analog Computer Study of the Small EGCR In-Pile Loops

The ORNL analog computer was used to simulate four widely different experiment conditions in the small EGCR in-pile loops. Various control and safety systems were evaluated in each case. Curves are included which show the response to postulated accidents and component failures. The results indicate that one standard control and safety system will probably be adequate for a wide variety of test conditions.

Response of Pressure Gauges to Dust-Laden Shock Waves

"A series of shock tube studies demonstrate that two types of pressure gauges respond to dust carried with shock waves by indicating an increase in dynamic pressure. This contribution to the dynamic pressure is approximately the product of the dust density and the square of the dust velocity under the experimental conditions. Besides this information studies give insight into the interaction of a square shock wave with dust when that dust is placed in a plane before and parallel to the shock front. It is found that the shape of the pressure wave is little changed except for a rounding of the front. The dust, after accelerating, is carried as a pulse with the mass flow velocity of the air."

An Integrated Miniature Solvent Extraction System for Processing Radioactive Solutions

Abstract: "Because of the radiation hazards inherent in processing large volumes of radioactive solutions by solvent extraction techniques, there is need for a system with small hold-up which can be contained within a minimum of shielding and yet which is versatile enough to be used as a research tool. A system utilizing a miniature mixer-settler has been constructed and its successful operation by remote means demonstrated. The unit is semiportable and employs a number of novel features of value in studying a wide variety of solvent extraction flowsheets. Data on the distribution of nitric acid between water and tributyl phosphate (in kerosene) are included as a demonstration of the operability of the unit."

In a gas-cooled reactor operating at very high power density the thickness of the reflector may be determine by the requirement that the steel pressure vessel be protected from an excessive dose of fast neutrons, rather than by the usual requirements of neutron economy and power distribution. It is important the the reflector not be made thicker than necessary, since an increase in pressure vessel diameter can result in a marked increase in cost, as well as a decrease in the permitted gas pressure level.

Unstable Particles As Targets In Scattering Experiments

A general method is suggested for analyzing the scattering of particle A by particle B, leading to three or more final particles, in order to obtain the cross section for the interaction of A with a particle which is virtually contained in B. Binding complications are absent if a plausible assumption about the location and residues of poles in the S-matrix is accepted. The method is useful for unstable particles from which free targets cannot be made; the special examples of pion and neutron targets are discussed in detail.

Cosmic Rays From Large Supernovae

The theory of the hydrodynamic origin of cosmic rays proposed by Johnson and the author (Colgate) has developed to the point where the final evolution of a star to the supernova instability and subsequent explosion can be described with sufficient detail such that cosmic rays with appropriate intensity, composition, and spectrum to account for observations are a logical and necessary result. In the first publication it was pointed out that nuclei in the surface of the star may acquire many orders or magnitude more than the average energy per particle released in the explosion because of the large ratio of matter density between the core and the outer mantle. A shock from a sudden pressure increase in the core intensifies as it advances into lower-density material, thereby imparting extreme relativistic energies to the outermost layers. The shock wave was assumed on the basis that the observed explosion occurred in a time short compared to the traversal time of sound across the dimensions of the star. It was argued without proof that an adiabatic process would be inconsistent with the accepted gravitational instability as the trigger mechanism. Hazards Report for PM-2A Core II

Abstract: This technical report describes the changes incurred in the PM-2A by the planned insertion of PM-2A Core II and the replacement of the startup and check sources. PM-2A Core II components were fabricated to specifications very nearly identical to those of PM-2A Core I. The essential difference in the cores is the boron loading which permits PM-2A Core II to meet a "one-stuck rod criteria" at beginning of life. This core has been subjected to a zero power experiment and loading procedures have been developed at the Alco Critical Facility. The nuclear and thermal and hydraulic characteristics are essentially identical to those of Core I and the replacement of the startup and check sources represent no increase in the potential for or magnitude of a hazardous situation.

Anisotropic Elastic Scattering of Neutrons

In an elastic collision the neutron loses part of its kinetic energy to the nucleus with both the kinetic and momentum of the system being conserved. However, for many elements the scattering is not isotropic in the center-of-mass system at the higher neutron energies. Many of the present reactor multigroup codes include anisotropic scattering at the high neutron energies, while many others assume isotropic scattering at all energies. In order to consider some of the effects of including anisotropic scatting, reference is made t the multigroup equation generally assumed for the slowing-down density.

Servo System for Magnetic Controlled Constant Intensity Flat Top Beam Spill-Out

A uniform intensity flat top spill-out cannot be obtained by manual control for two reasons: 1. The horizontal density of the internal beam of the Cosmotron is far from uniform. As a result, a manually controlled linear motion of the internal beam into a target will result in a non-uniform spill-out intensity. 2. Stability requirements of the Cosmotron magnet voltage are not easily met without feedback because of inherent component stability. The proposed servo system will sense the external beam intensity, and correct the magnet voltage to keep this intensity constant. This servo must operate through the transfer function of the main ignitron system and the flat top filter. Both of those transfer functions impose special problems.

Recent Total Neutron Yield Measurements (open access)

Recent Total Neutron Yield Measurements

The report summarizes results obtained since September, 1951, by total neutron yield experiments using 190 Mev deuterons and the MnSo4 tank method (UCRL-1375 and UCRL-1480). A new method of beam monitoring has resulted in establishing firmly the absolute yield for solid uranium and thorium primary targets backed by a solid uranium secondary. The beam monitoring was done by using a primary target built into a faraday cup. This method circumvents errors caused by recombination in the ionization chambers used previously.
