Mafic and Ultramafic Xenoliths from Volcanic Rocks of the Western United States

From abstract: Mafic and ultramafic xenoliths in the Western United States are present in volcanic rocks ranging from lamprophyric to dacitic in composition and are found in every major tectonic province from the Coast ranges from California to the Great Plains. Xenoliths from 68 localities are described here, but new localities are being discovered, and much remain to be learned about their distribution with respect to the tectonic and geophysical framework of the Western United States.

Testing and Development of Electric Vehicle Batteries for EPRI Electric Transportation Program : Technical Report for January 1985 - April 1986 (open access)

Testing and Development of Electric Vehicle Batteries for EPRI Electric Transportation Program : Technical Report for January 1985 - April 1986

The battery is a key element in the acceptance of electric vehicles, and R and D efforts are being undertaken to improve battery performance and lifetime. In this electric-vehicle battery program, controlled laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of selected factors on the performance and life of the EV-2300 lead-acid battery manufactured by Johnson Controls, Inc. These factors included simulated driving profiles with different levels of peak power demands for vehicle acceleration, long rest times after charge or discharge, and different methods of recharging. The performance and cycle life of a 12-module full-scale battery pack and its support system were also evaluated. This report summarizes the work carried out on this program from January 1985 through April 1986. This work involved tests of the battery pack and support system, statistical analysis of capacity and power data from earlier tests of six-cell modules, and post-test analysis of selected modules and cells.

Some Issues Concerning Fluidelastic Instability of a Group of Circular Cylinders in Crossflow (open access)

Some Issues Concerning Fluidelastic Instability of a Group of Circular Cylinders in Crossflow

Since the early 1970s, extensive studies of fluid-elastic instability of circular cylinders in crossflow have been reported. A significant understanding of the phenomena involved now exists. However, some confusion, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation still remain. The objective of this report is to discuss, on the basis of the current state of the art, a series of the most asked questions. Emphasis is placed on the determination of the critical flow velocity, non-dimensional parameters, stability criteria, and instability mechanisms.

Acoustic Leak Detection for District Heating Systems (open access)

Acoustic Leak Detection for District Heating Systems

An acoustic leak detection facility was completed and used to evaluate the capability of piezoelectric sensors, accelerometers, and capacitance microphones to detect and locate gas and water leaks in underground district heating and cooling (DHC) piping. Leak detection sensitivity and location capabilities for DHC systems were estimated from laboratory data and from data obtained from the underground DH system in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where acoustic background noise levels and acoustic signals from field-induced steam leaks were acquired. Acoustic detection of leaks with flow rates of less than 10 gpm is possible at a distance of several hundred meters, with a location accuracy of a few meters. Although steam leaks of comparable mass loss can be detected over a similar range with transducers mounted on the pipe outer wall, location accuracy of a few meters over this range may only be possible with transducers in direct contract with the steam. Intrusive sensors may also be necessary to detect and locate leaks in plastic pipe.

Reference Manual for the Environmental Theorem Prover: an Incarnation of AURA

This document provides a complete specification of the input language for the environmental theorem prover. This language is essentially the same input language used by any of the programs designated by AURA, an automated reasoning program developed at Argonne National Laboratory. The intended audience is the user who is already familiar with the concepts and terms associated with resolution-based theorem provers.

Speciation of Radionuclides in Natural Groundwaters, Annual Report: October 1986 through September 1987

Two ultrasensitive laser techniques, laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (LPAS) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), are being developed for the detection and speciation of trace levels of actinides in solutions typical of those expected in a high-level waste repository. An LPAS system was set up for these studies. Experiments were carried out to determine the detection limits of plutonium and americium in solution. Concurrently with the LPAS work, LIF studies were carried out on uranyl ion and curium in solution.

Annex to 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source : Conceptual Design Report

The Annex to the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source Conceptual Design Report updates the Conceptual Design Report of 1987 (CDR-87) to include the results of further optimization and changes of the design during the past year. The design changes can be summarized as affecting three areas: the accelerator system, conventional facilities, and experimental systems. Most of the changes in the accelerator system result from inclusion of a positron accumulator ring (PAR), which was added at the suggestion of the 1987 DOE Review Committee, to speed up the filling rate of the storage ring. The addition of the PAR necessitates many minor changes in the linac system, the injector synchrotron, and the low-energy beam transport lines. 63 figs., 18 tabs.

Characteristics of the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source : a Guide for Users (open access)

Characteristics of the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source : a Guide for Users

In this document we present the characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation from various types of sources on the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring. The sources include bending magnets, undulators, and wigglers. The characteristics are compared with those of other synchrotron sources when operated at their design specifications. The influence of positron beam size on the on-axis brilliance is discussed, along with the power distribution from these sources. The goal of this document is to provide users with enough information on the characteristics of radiation from the APS storage ring so that experiments can be efficiently planned.

Searching for Fixed Point Combinators by Using Automated Theorem Proving : a Preliminary Report (open access)

Searching for Fixed Point Combinators by Using Automated Theorem Proving : a Preliminary Report

In this report, we establish that the use of an automated theorem- proving program to study deep questions from mathematics and logic is indeed an excellent move. Among such problems, we focus mainly on that concerning the construction of fixed point combinators--a problem considered by logicians to be significant and difficult to solve, and often computationally intensive and arduous. To be a fixed point combinator, THETA must satisfy the equation THETAx = x(THETAx) for all combinators x. The specific questions on which we focus most heavily ask, for each chosen set of combinators, whether a fixed point combinator can be constructed from the members of that set. For answering questions of this type, we present a new, sound, and efficient method, called the kernel method, which can be applied quite easily by hand and very easily by an automated theorem-proving program. For the application of the kernel method by a theorem-proving program, we illustrate the vital role that is played by both paramodulation and demodulation--two of the powerful features frequently offered by an automated theorem-proving program for treating equality as if it is ''understood.'' We also state a conjecture that, if proved, establishes the completeness of the kernel method. From …

Practical Issues Relating to the Internal Database Predicates in an OR-Parallel Prolog: Extensions and Useful Hacks (open access)

Practical Issues Relating to the Internal Database Predicates in an OR-Parallel Prolog: Extensions and Useful Hacks

This technical report is being written to document and explain some of the insights the authors have gained during the implementation of two OR-parallel Prolog systems for shared-memory multiprocessors. We have been quite amazed by how much power and functionality can be achieved through the implementation of just a few primitive predicates. We introduce a few relatively trivial predicates which allow one to implement versions of findall/3, bagof/3, and setof/3 for the a multiprocessor environment. Then we show how these predicates can be used to implement AND-parallelism. Finally, we illustrate their use for implementing a limited notion of streams, and how such streams can be used to create a compiler that achieves excellent speedups for multiprocessors with a limited number of processors.
