Investigation of Turbocirculator for Target, a 1000-Mw(e) Reactor: Summary Report

The present study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the feasibility, establishing the required development program, and estimating the cost of a turbocirculator to provide the pumping power for a 1000-Mw(e) high-temperature gas-cooled reactor power plant as part of the TARGET program. This necessitated preliminary design of the turbocirculator in conjunction with the reactor power plant as well as the investigation of methods for the optimization of the turbocirculator and for its development. This study was carried out in sufficient detail to fix the methods required to resolve the problems that would be encountered during the course of a prototype program resulting in a turbocirculator for the TARGET power plant.

Operating Forces on Miter-Type Lock Gates (open access)

Operating Forces on Miter-Type Lock Gates

This report presents the results of a series of investigations to address possible lock operation problems. "Tests to determine operation forces on miter-type lock gates were conducted in a 5.5-ft-wide, 66.5-ft-long, 4.25-ft-deep flume equipped with a single set of miter gate leaves located approximately inthe center of the flume. Three linkages, with differenet kinematics of the operating machinery, were studied: modified Ohio River, Panama, and Ohio River. For each linkage, tests were conducted at gate submergences of 1 to 4 ft and at operating times of 10.1 to 40.2 sec. The effects of chamber length, bottom clearance of gates, presence of barges in the lock chamger, and nonsynchronous operation of the gate leaves also were investigated" (p. vii).

Groundwater in Alluvium of the Lower Mississippi Valley (Upper and Central Areas): Volume 1 (open access)

Groundwater in Alluvium of the Lower Mississippi Valley (Upper and Central Areas): Volume 1

Summary: "This report provides data on the alluvial aquifer of the Lower Mississippi Valley in the area between Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Port Gibson, Mississippi. Maps are presented of the Tertiary surface on which the alluvial aquifer rests as well as the geology of this surface and the areas where hydrologic recharge to the alluvial aquifer may occur. A set of piezometric-surface maps, together with hydrographs of observation wells, river stages, precipitation rates, and data on the hydrologic properties of the alluvium, makes it possible to calculate changes which take place in the aquifer. Further data are presented on the chemical quality of groundwater. The relevance of these data to engineering problems is discussed" (p. ix).

Geology of the Sumdum Copper-Zinc Prospect, Southeastern Alaska (open access)

Geology of the Sumdum Copper-Zinc Prospect, Southeastern Alaska

From abstract: The Sumdum copper-zinc prospect is in an alpine region on the mainland of southeastern Alaska, about 50 miles southeast of Juneau and about 25 miles west of the Canadian boundary. The ore-bearing outcrops at the prospect were discovered by the Alaska Helicopter Syndicate during the summer of 1958. The prospect is within a few thousand feet of the western margin of the . Coast Range batholith in regionally metamorphosed rocks that locally -have -been contact: metamorphosed. Most of the known ore deposits are -in the intermediate unit of three metamorphic-rock units that were mapped.

Oxidized Zinc Deposits of the United States: Part 3. Colorado (open access)

Oxidized Zinc Deposits of the United States: Part 3. Colorado

From abstract: Deposits of oxidized zinc ore are widely distributed in the western part of Colorado in the Rocky Mountains west of the Front Range and in the uplifted plateaus that border the main area of the Colorado Plateau. The principal production and reserves are restricted to several mining districts--Leadville. Aspen, Monarch, Spring Creek. Horseshoe, Tomichi, Tincup, and Rico--in all of which limestone and dolomites of Paleozoic age are the main host rocks. One deposit, that of the Sedalia mine near Salida has produced commercial quantities of oxidized zinc-copper ore from noncarbonate host rocks, but other known deposits in noncarbonate rocks are mostly low grade.

Construction of a Sea-Level, Transisthmian Canal Using Nuclear Explosives (open access)

Construction of a Sea-Level, Transisthmian Canal Using Nuclear Explosives

Partial abstract: "This report is based: (1) on information developed in earlier high explosive experiments which determined the optimum spacing and burial depth of charges in a row to produce a channel uniformly wide and deep, and (2) on the Sedan and Danny Boy experiments, which provided data on dimensions of nuclear craters in both soil and basalt rock. This information has been combined with the 1947 route surveys of the Panama Canal company, and estimates have been made not only of the number and yield of nuclear explosives required to excavate a Transisthmian canal with nuclear explosives, but also of the cost of the explosives and the cost of their replacement."

Subsurface Fracturing from Shoal Nuclear Detonation: Final Report (open access)

Subsurface Fracturing from Shoal Nuclear Detonation: Final Report

Abstract: A fracture-evaluation experiment in conjunction with the Shoal nuclear detonation in granite was undertaken to determine the extent of subsurface shock-induced fractures. Preshot and postshot geophysical logs in a hole drilled from the surface through the zone of fractures indicated that fractures extended at least 5.3 cavity radii laterally from the point of detonation. Quantitative measurements of permeability increases resulting from the detonation were planned, but were not completed because of adverse test-hole conditions. General descriptions of the Shoal Project, geology of the test site, and other effects of the detonation are included.
