HASL Aerial Survey System (open access)

HASL Aerial Survey System

Radioactive debris from nuclear detonations may fall out over an extensive area. A rapid evaluation of the distribution of such surface contamination cam be obtained by an aircraft mounted detector. The gamma field measured in the aircraft can be related to the intensity on the ground. The HASL Top Hat'' system measures the radiation intensity, in an aircraft, at any altitude up to 1500 feet. The data are continuously compensated to the reading that would be obtained if the measurements were taken at three feet from thc ground surface. It will record the ground radiation field intensities from 0.01 mr/hr to 1000 r/hr. The Telepulse Coding Unit converts this information to a signal suitable for transmission to a plotting center via a standard voice radio transmitter. The transmitted signal is decoded by a Telepulse Receiving Unit and is automatically recorded on a strip chart. The radiation data must be correlated with the aircraft position to determine the location amd intensity distribution of the contaminated area.

Some Effects of Aileron Deflection on the Static Lateral and Directional Aerodynamic Characteristics of Four Contemporary Airplane Models

Memorandum presenting some effects of aileron deflection on the static lateral and directional aerodynamic characteristics of four airplane models which are representative of aircraft capable of flight at supersonic speeds. The results are presented for subsonic Mach numbers ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 and for supersonic Mach numbers ranging from 1.20 to 1.90. They are limited to the most pertinent aerodynamic effects of ailerons contributing to the lateral and directional characteristics of each airplane type.

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family (open access)

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family

Abstract: "With magnetic alpha-particle and electron high-resolution spectrographs and scintillation gamma-ray spectrometers, a study was made of the nuclear decay of a number of members of the actinium family - U-235, Th-227, Ra-223, Em-219, Po-215, and Bi-211. Decay schemes are presented for each of these nuclides, together with such correlations as are possible with present theoretical nuclear models. The decay scheme of U-235 and a portion of that of Th-227 are interpretable in terms of the collective model and a spherical shell-model characteristics; however, the intermediate nuclides present complexities not well understood."

Effects of airplane flexibility on wing bending strains in rough air (open access)

Effects of airplane flexibility on wing bending strains in rough air

"Some results on the effects of wing flexibility on wing bending strains as determined from flight tests of a Boeing B-29 and a Boeing B-47A airplane in rough air are presented. Results from an analytical study of the flexibility effects on the B-29 wing strains are compared with the experimental results. Both the experimental and calculated results are presented as frequency-response functions of the bending strains at various spanwise wing stations to gust disturbances. In addition, some indirect evidence of the effect of spanwise variations in turbulence on the response of the B-47A airplane is presented" (p. 1).

Propellant vaporization as a criterion for rocket engine design; Calculations of chamber length to vaporize a single n-heptane drop

Report presenting an analysis based on droplet-evaporation theory, which shows that for a given combustor length, the percent of fuel mass vaporized can be increased by decreasing the fuel-drop size and initial drop velocity, or by increasing chamber pressure, final gas velocity, and initial fuel temperature. The results were correlated to give a single curve of percent of fuel evaporated as a function of the chamber length and the factors involving the parameters.

The minimization of wave drag for wings and bodies with given base area or volume

"The minimization of wave drag for thin aerodynamic shapes carrying no lift is studied for conditions under which either base area or volume is specified. When volume alone is given, the analysis is limited to shapes with straight trailing edges normal to the stream direction. The problem of minimization is reduced to one of finding a two-dimensional harmonic function with known boundary conditions" (p. 1).
