"A supersonic wind-tunnel investigation on store interference has been conducted in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel at a Mach number of 1.61. Forces and moments were measured on a large ogive-cylinder store in the presence of a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage bomber configuration for a number of store locations below the fuselage center line. Results of the investigation show that large variations of store lift, drag, and pitch occur with changes in store or airplane angle of attack, store vertical location, and store horizontal location" (p. 1).

Growth of Disturbances in a Flame-Generated Shear Region

Results are presented of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the growth of transverse velocity disturbances in the shear region caused by a flame in a duct. In the theoretical stability analysis, a flow field arising from a flame in a duct was analyzed. The flow was neutrally stable to symmetric disturbances and unstable to antisymmetric ones. In the experimental part of the program disturbances of various frequencies were imposed on a flame stabilized in a duct, and the effects were measured by shadow photography and photomultiplier-probe surveys.

Component performance investigation of J71 experimental turbine 7: effect of first-stator adjustment; over-all performance of J71 turbine with 87-percent-design stator area

The performance results, as well as a compressor-turbine match point study based on a particular mode of engine operation, are compared with those previously obtained with the same turbine having first-stator areas 70, 95.6, and 132 percent of design. Maximum efficiencies for all turbine configurations were high, on the order of 87 to 89 percent. The efficiencies obtained at the match points for the 87-, 95.6-, and 132-percent turbines were slightly lower. No match point for the 70-percent turbine was obtained because, with first-stator areas less than 75.5 percent of design, the turbine would develop insufficient work to drive the compressor at the match point.

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the low-speed stability and control characteristics of a scale free-flying model of the Convair XB-58 airplane. The model was flown over an angle-of-attack range from 9 to 30 degrees and only relatively low-altitude conditions were simulated. The stability and control characteristics were found to be satisfactory over the range investigated with the center of gravity at the 0.25 mean aerodynamic chord.

Some experiments at high supersonic speeds on the aerodynamic and boundary-layer transition characteristics of high-drag bodies of revolution

Report presenting measurements made at Mach numbers of 4.0 and 8.3 of the drag, static stability, damping in pitch, and boundary-layer transition characteristics of several high-drag bodies of revolution that might be used for high-speed entry into the earth's atmosphere. The static stability was found to be high with centers of pressure as far aft as 91 percent of the length from the nose. Results regarding the force and moment data, boundary-layer transition, a comparison of roughness height to boundary-layer thickness, other causes of boundary-layer instability, and Reynolds numbers for high-speed entry into the Earth's atmosphere are provided.

Effect of Some External Crosswise Stiffeners on the Heat Transfer and Pressure Distribution on a Flat Plate at Mach Numbers of 0.77, 1.39, and 1.98

The heat transfer and pressures on the surfaces of several flat-plate models with various external crosswise stiffener arrangements are presented. The tests were made in a free jet at Mach numbers of 0.77, 1.39, and 1.98 for Reynolds numbers of 3 x 10(exp 6), 7 x 10(exp 6), and 14 x 10(exp 6), respectively, based on a length of 1 foot. The addition of external crosswise stiffeners to the flat-plate models caused large pressure and heat-transfer variations on the surfaces of the models.

Preliminary Note on a Correlation of a Boundary-Layer Transition Results on Highly Cooled Blunt Bodies

"Transition data on highly cooled blunt bodies are correlated in terms of the ratio of wall to local-stream enthalpy, Reynolds number based on displacement thickness, and location of transition. The proposed correlation, although not sensitive enough to predict the exact location of transition does predict the enthalpy ratio below which very early transition on blunt bodies is expected. The correlation is not altered by moderate amounts of surface roughness; however, the location of transition may well be affected by roughness" (p. 1).

High-Temperature Properties in Relation to Design

The essential physical and mechanical properties of materials which enter into the design considerations of high-temperature systems have been outlined, and the relationship of these factors to the detailed design of structural members noted. Particular attention is given to the phenomenon of strain-cycling and relaxation, and several engineering devices wherein these effects can markedly influence design are mentioned. Techniques and apparatus for the measurement of strain-cycling and relaxation properties are described and some recent data for Inconel at 1500 F is reported. A brief discussion is presented on design-criterial for high-temperature applications, and it is pointed out that in some high performance devices the considerations of the strain-cycling phenomenon may impose the design philosophy of "steady-state" operation. Some elementary applications of strain cycling data to design are described, and test experience indicates that analytical techniques can be developed for predicting with reasonable reliability of the fatigue life of structures.

Spectrophotometric Determination of Cerium with Tiron

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of cerium with Tiron (disodium-1,2-dihydroxybenzene-3,5disulfonate) was applied to the determination of cerium in samples which contain uranium and zirconium. The cerium-Tiron complex in solutions of pH 8 or greater exhibits an absorption maximum of 500 mu . This reagent does not react with any other lanthanide element. The interference of iron, uranium, and zirconium was eliminated by extracting these interfering elements with a solution of trioctylphosphine oxide in cyclohexane. (auth)
