Final Contract Report for September 1, 1959 to August 31, 1960 .

"As presented in the original proposal the project consisted essentially of three parts: Phase I, Development and refinement of a radiochemical flow counting technique for the study of kinetics of reactions in solution ; Phase II, The application of this technique to the detailed study of the mechanism of solvolysis of sulfonium salts in mixed solvents ; Phase II, The further application of this kinetic technique, as a longer term aim, to other reacting systems of biochemical or other interest. This report covers the work of the contractual period 1 Sept. 1959 to 31 Aug. 1960."

High Performance UO2 Program Quarterly Progress Report Number 2: July-September 1961

The primary purpose of this joint USAEC-Euratom program is to obtain a better understanding if the maximum achievable operating characteristics of UO2 as a reactor fuel. During the program work will be performed in two areas that have been of concern to reactor core designers for a long time, namely fission gas release and central melting in fuel rods.

"Crud" Scrubbing with a Purex-Type Zebra Cartridge (open access)

"Crud" Scrubbing with a Purex-Type Zebra Cartridge

Entrained solids have in the past been one of the major factors limiting solvent extraction fission product decontamination. These solids are known to be surface active, to absorb fission products, and to form interfacial films or "cruds". A major step in eliminating these cruds was taken when the Purex columns were modified to operate with the interfaces at the waste ends of the columns rather than the product ends. This type of operation tended to flush the solids out with the waste rather than the product streams.

Tables of Spectral-Line Intensities: Part 2, Arranged by Wavelengths

From Abstract: "Comparisons with other intensity measurements in individual spectra indicate that the National Bureau of Standards spectral-line intensities may have average errors of 20 percent, but first of all they provide uniform quantitative values for the seventy chemical elements commonly determined by spectrochemists. These data are presented by element in part I, and all 39,000 observed lines are given in order of wavelength in part II."

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II Without the SM-1 Core I High Burnup Elements and With the PM-1-M-2 Element (open access)

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II Without the SM-1 Core I High Burnup Elements and With the PM-1-M-2 Element

Abstract: The removal of both SM-1 Core I high burnup elements from SM-1 Core II and the insertion of the PM-1-M-2 element and the SM-1 Core I spare element in SM-1 Core II is discussed. Nuclear and thermal characteristics of Core II with these changes are presented and conclusions related to the changes in the hazard potential are made. If the core change indicated by this report is made, local peaking factors will be decreased and burnout ratios will be increased. This, of course, in itself leads to a more conservative estimate of core safety. There is no conceivable reason why the perturbation may not be safely made in the SM-1 Core II.

Criteria for Evaluating Hazards Involved in Proposed Tests On and/or Modifications To the SM-1

Abstract: This technical report elucidates principles of hazards evaluation. The concept of hazards potential is introduced and utilized to show how a reactor system perturbation will influence its nuclear safety. Literature relating to reactor safety is referenced to provide the sources of information required for hazards analysis and show how they influence a hazards evaluation. A checklist of items which should be considered in evaluating a change, test, or modification is presented.

Las Vegas Area (ARMS-II)

From Abstract: "An Aerial Radiological Measuring Survey (ARMS) of the Las Vegas area was made for the Civil Effects Test Operations, Division of Biology and Medicine, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, by Edgerton, Germeshausen & Grier, Inc., between May 21 and June 23, 1961. The survey was part of a nationwide program to measure present environmental levels of gamma radiation. Approximately 6000 traverse miles were flown, at an attitude of 500 ft above the ground, in a 100-mile square centered near Las Vegas. The EG&G ARMS-II instrumentation was used in the survey."

Low Frequency Amplifier IH-130-1

A tranistorized d.c. coupled amplifier having very good gain stability, as well as very low drift of the output d.c. level, has been designed. Low frequency input signals with an amplitude of .04 to 2 volts peak-to-peak, approximately, coming from a low impedance source (voice soil of a speaker system) are amplified to an approximate peak-to-peak amplitude of 4 volts. The output is intended to drive a load of the order of 100 kohm.
