Sea Water Corrosion Test Program
From Introduction: "The first demonstration plant sponsored by the Office of Saline Water was located in Freeport, Texas, and came 'on stream" in 1961. The incoming sea water was deaerated since both Speller (6) and Uhlig (7) recognized that dissolved oxygen was usually the controlling factor in the corrosion of iron stream condensate at temperatures even as high 400 degrees F. The water was acidified prior to daeration with H2SO4 to decompose the carbonates which subsequently would cause scale when the water was heated. After the carbonates were removed, the pH was raised to the neutral point, again to provide a less corrosive environment."

Part 1 of this report summarizes the process development work and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade mica concentrates. The report also includes details of commercial beneficiation and grinding of mica. Also included in part 2 of this report are details of commercial mica production, including methods of mining, recovering, and grinding mica, and information on the production, uses, and prices of mica."

A Study and Development of the Hickman Sea-Water Still
From Introduction: "The report is organized into three major sections and three appendixes. In first major section are presented a brief historical account of the work done by other organizations prior to November, 1957, and a detailed description of the experiments conducted by Battelle with the No.4 and No. 5 stills. The second major section summarizes the results of cost studies. The third major section gives data, calculations, and derivations pertaining to the heat-transfer aspects of the Hickman still."

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria
From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."

Raleigh 1° x 2° NTMS Area, North Carolina: Data Report (Abbreviated)
From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Raleigh l x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 1199 sites. Surface water samples were collected at 124 of these sites. Ground water samples were collected at 907 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, for uranium and 9 other elements in surface water, and for uranium and 8 other elements in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.

Water Quality of the French Broad River, North Carolina An Analysis of Data Collected at Marshall, 1958-77
From introduction: This report presents the results of an investigation of the quality of water in the French Broad River at Marshall, N.C., that is based on data collected during the period 1958-77. Major objectives of the study were: (1) to define variations in water quality; (2) to determine the degree to which the quality of water in the river is affected by man's activities; and, (3) to identify past and present trends in the chemical quality of water in the river.

Preliminary Study of the Uranium Potential of the Dan River Triassic Basin System, North Carolina and Virginia
From summary: A preliminary geologic investigation was conducted to determine the uranium potential of the Triassic strata in the Dan River basin system (Dan River, Danville, and Davie County Triassic basins) of North Carolina and Virginia. The pre-Triassic Inner Piedmont basement rocks adjacent to the basins were investigated as potential sources of uranium. Outcrops of Triassic and basement rocks were examined and measured for surface radioactivity by scintillometer. Representative rock and saprolite samples were collected for laboratory analyses.
