The Humidity of Mine Air with Especial Reference to Coal Mines in Illinois
From Introduction: "The investigative work described in this report was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the department of mining engineering of the University of Illinois and the Illinois and Illinois State Geological Survey. The purpose of this agreement was to provide for a comprehensive investigation of coal-mining conditions in the State, with especial reference to the possibility of lessening waste in the mining and preparation of coal and of reducing the dangers to which miners are exposed. Thus, it studied the occurrence of gas (methane) in the mines of the southern part of the State, tested the inflammability of the coal dust from many mines, examined the efficiency of the control of ventilating currents, and investigated the factors affecting the humidity of mine air with respect to their bearing on the occurrence of mine explosions."

A Holmes and continued under him as director after it was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1910, the field studies being completed in the spring of 1912. Oil and Gas Wells through Workable Coal Beds: Papers and Discussions
From Preface: "In carrying out such a policy with reference to the subject under consideration, the Bureau of Mines invited the State geologists, mine inspectors, and a number of coal operators and oil and gas well drillers from the States interested to meet representatives of the Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh, Pa., for a discussion of the subject during February 7 and February 8, 1913. This adjourned meeting of the conference will be held at an early date and its report will be printed in a later edition of this bulletin, with such additional suggestions as may be received by the Bureau of Mines. The bureau will be glad, therefore, to receive at the earliest practicable date any additional suggestions or any additional information throwing light on the matters discussed in this bulletin."

Recovery of Zinc from Low-Grade and Complex Ores
From Introduction: "Vocalization in retorts has been, until recently, the only commercial process of producing spelter, hence the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc smelters in regard to the following requirements: (1) Minimum percentage of zinc the ore must contain; (2) the chemical combination of the zinc in the ore; (3) the proportion present of those elements that interfere with the successful recovery of the zinc when the ore is retorted. As stated previously, and as will be shown later, a large part of the valuable mineral content of the ore is lost in effecting this concentration. As a result of the other requirements that have to be met in zinc smelting, much zinc is lost in the mining and milling of zinc ore."

Tests of Coal and Briquets as Fuel for House-Heating Boilers
From Introduction: "Perhaps the most important result obtained is that showing the relative value of different fuels for domestic purposes. From Table 16. on page 39, it is possible by comparison to arrive at the probable value of any fuel in any part of the country. The figures in the table show that with a sectional boiler the effectiveness of different fuels depends on the number of thermal units they contain. Combustion of Coal and Design of Furnaces
From Purpose and scope of Investigations: "The combustion investigations of bureau are carried on in two parts. One part is the study of the process of combustion in the fuel bed as affected by the rate of supplying air through the fuel bed, by the character of the fuel as regards structure and composition, by the thickness of fuel bed, by the method of feeding the coal and the air and by the method of heating the coal. The second part of the investigation is the study of the process of combustion of the gases and other combustible rising from the fuel bed in the combustion space, after a sufficient quantity of air has been added.
