Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination (open access)

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination

From abstract: The effect of heat on the surface removal of concrete was studied by conducting brush tests on samples which had been subjected to prolonged high temperatures in an oven or in direct contact with an oxy-propane flame. Other methods of heat-treating surface layers of concrete were investigated by direct application of an oxy-aluminum torch on the surface and by the exothermic chemical reactions of pyrotechnic compositions placed directly on the surface.

A Final Report on the Experiment : the Penetration of Graphite of Different Purities by Lead Bismuth Eutectic (open access)

A Final Report on the Experiment : the Penetration of Graphite of Different Purities by Lead Bismuth Eutectic

Bi-Pb eutectic and pure Bi penetration of graphites of various densities under 300 degrees C and pressures up to 20 psi was found be of the order of magnitude of 1.0 g/cm(2) and was uniform throughout the graphite. Bi was absorbed less than the eutectic but the oxidation rate of Bi would be prohibitive. There was heavy nitriding in N atmospheres with the Bi and the eutectic.

Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Model 1

From introduction: The goal of engineers associated with nuclear power plants is the achievement of safe plants with low generating costs. One possible means of lowering costs is to increase the power generating capability for a single generating unit. Flight measurements of horizontal tail loads on a typical propeller-driven pursuit airplane during stalled pull-outs at high speed (open access)

Flight measurements of horizontal tail loads on a typical propeller-driven pursuit airplane during stalled pull-outs at high speed

Report presenting flight measurements of the pressures on the horizontal tail surfaces of a typical propeller-driven pursuit airplane during stalled pull-outs at high Mach number. Unit loads measured on the stabilizer at safe maneuvering limits were not only considerably in excess of the design unit loads, but also occurred in a direction opposite to the design loads. Revision of the tail-load design requirements and manner of specifying safe maneuverability limits to pilots appears necessary.

Effect of inlet-air-flow-distortions on steady-state performance of J65-B-3 turbojet engine (open access)

Effect of inlet-air-flow-distortions on steady-state performance of J65-B-3 turbojet engine

The effects of inlet-air-flow distortions on the performance of the J65-B-3 turbojet engine were determined over a range of altitudes from 15,000 to 50,000 feet at a flight Mach number of 0.8. Radial inlet-air-flow distortions apparently do not affect the radial distribution of pressure after the first few compressor stages, while the circumferential inlet-air-flow distortion carried completely through the engine. For the distortions investigated, at rated exhaust-gas temperature and fixed-area exhaust-nozzle operation, the primary effect of the radial inlet-air-flow distortions was to reduce the engine air flow, and the primary effect of the circumferential distortion was to impose a temperature profile on the turbine, both resulting in reduction of thrust.

Equilibrium Operating Performance of Axial-Flow Turbojet Engines by Means of Idealized Analysis (open access)

Equilibrium Operating Performance of Axial-Flow Turbojet Engines by Means of Idealized Analysis

"A method of predicting equilibrium operating performance of turbojet engines has been developed, with the assumption of simple model processes for the components. Results of the analysis are plotted in terms of dimensionless parameters comprising critical engine dimensions and over-all operating variables. This investigation was made of an engine in which the ratio of axial inlet-air velocity to compressor-tip velocity is constant, which approximates turbojet engines with axial-flow compressors" (p. 673).
