Final Report: Airborne Reconnaissance Project Dripping Spring, Quartzite, Gila County, Arizona

Abstract: A low-level airborne radiometric survey of the younger pre-Cambrian Dripping Spring quartzite, undertaken in the mountainous region lying roughly 100 riles east of Phoenix, was completed June 3, 1955. Twenty-seven radioactive anomalies were located. To date seven of these have produced uranium ore, four more will probably become producers, and six others may possibly become producers. Flying was concentrated in the Dripping Spring quartzite, but reconnaissance flights were made over other formations. Private prospecting, both from the air and on the ground, increased considerably when the airborne project started. Eleven of the private discoveries have produced ore, and many others show considerable promise.

Memorandum presenting tests conducted with four specific versions of a swept-wing fighter airplane, which indicate that a large reduction in external-drag coefficient was accomplished by redesigning the original configuration. The forebody modifications, which consisted of a smaller canopy, slimmer nose, and sharper inlet lip, reduced the value of the external-drag coefficient from 0.044 to 0.042 at a Mach number of 1.05 and from 0.042 to 0.040 at a Mach number of 1.28.

Performance of conical jet nozzles in terms of flow and velocity coefficients

Performance characteristics of conical jet nozzles were determined in an investigation covering a range of pressure ratios from 1.0 to 2.8, cone half-angles from 5 degrees to 90 degrees, and outlet-inlet diameter ratios from 0.50 to 0.91. All nozzles investigated had an inlet diameter of 5 inches. The flow coefficients of the conical nozzles investigated were dependent on the cone half-angle, outlet-inlet diameter ratio, and pressure ratio. The velocity coefficients were essentially constant at pressure ratios below the critical. For increasing pressures above critical pressure ratio, there was a small decrease in velocity coefficient that was dependent on pressure ratio and independent of cone half-angle and outlet-inlet diameter ratio. Therefore the variation in performance (air flow and thrust) of several nozzles, selected for the same performance at a particular design condition, was proportional to the ratio of their flow coefficients.

A study of elastic and plastic stress concentration factors due to notches and fillets in flat plates

Six large 24s-t3 aluminum-alloy-sheet specimens containing various notches or fillets were tested in tension to determine their stress concentration factors in both the elastic and plastic ranges. The elastic stress concentration factors were found to be slightly higher than those calculated by Neuber's method and those obtained photoelastically by Frocht. The results showed further that the stress concentration factor decreases as strains at the discontinuity enter the plastic range. A generalization of Stowell's relation for the plastic stress concentration factor at a circular hole in an infinite plate was applied to the specimen shapes tested and gave good agreement with test results.

The Effects of Reactor Irradiation of Thorium-Uranium Alloy Fuel Plates

Several plates of 98.7% Th - 1.2% U 235 (clad in aluminum) were irradiated in the MTR for an integrated flux of 2.6 x 10 21 neutrons/cm2. Although these samples represent an early development in bonding of aluminum to thorium and there are better methods at present, the bond proved to be quite strong and both clad and core were dimensionally stable under irradiation. The production of uranium 233 was as much as theory would indicate and the total amount of fissionable material material after irradiation and after decay of the protactinium 233 was greater than before irradiation. A fuel element of this nature appears to offer excellent potentialities from the standpoint of radiation stability.

Abstract: A control system to provide digital printing and to plot an analog trace on an electric operated IBM model 11C Output Writer is described. The Digital mode of operation translates multidigit numbers through a set of commands to print each digit serially, then presents them to the output writer in a time sequence. The Analog mode of operation converts a d.c. input voltage to a digital number and by tab and space bar commands translates the carriage horizontally a distance proportional to this number.
