Ex-vessel core catcher design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation. [LMFBR]

As part of the overall study of the consequences of a hypothetical failure to scram following loss of pumping power, design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation of an ex-vessel core catcher (EVCC) were performed. EVCC is the term applied to a class of devices whose primary objective is to provide a stable subcritical and coolable configuration within containment following a postulated accident in which it is assumed that core debris has penetrated the Reactor Vessel and Guard Vessel. Under these assumed conditions a set of functional requirements were developed for an EVCC and several concepts were evaluated. The studies were specifically directed toward the FFTF design considering the restraints imposed by the physical design and construction of the FFTF plant.

Elements of the world energy crisis (open access)

Elements of the world energy crisis

The chain of events leading to the wonld energy crisis is followed for each industrialized country and the effects that energy shortages are presenting and optiona that are available are identified. The Soviet Union has extensive oil and gas reserves and the USA has extensive fossil fuel reserves, but needs to develop technology for coal and shale. Western Europe has been dependent upon Middle East oil, but could develop their coal resources. Japan is dependent upon oil imports, and with the advanced prices of oil, the capital on that island needs to be used internally in improving living conditions. (MCW)

Survey study of low-expanding high-melting, mixed oxides

Approximately 40 mixed oxide materials were prepared and characterized primarily as to their thermal expansion and meltingpoint behavior. Of particular interest were those materials which were stable, had melting points in excess of 1,400 deg C, and had low thermal expansions. (auth)

Climate studies using a zonal atmospheric model (open access)

Climate studies using a zonal atmospheric model

The second generation zonal atmospheric model ZAM2 is being developed and applied to studies of the potential climatic impact of stratospheric injection of trace species by high altitude aircraft. The model is a two- dimensional general circulation model using a 5 deg latitude grid at nine pressure levels extending into the stratosphere. The effect of terms lost by zonal averaging is simulated by introduction of an eddy transport mechanism in which the eddy diffusion coefficient is a function of internal model variables. ZAM2 strives to model the thermodynamics and hydrology of a moist atmosphere under the influence of solar and long wave radiation, and includes precipitation, cloudiness, convection and surface interactions. The planetary surface is represented as fractionally divided at each latitude band between open ocean, sea ice, and land which may have mountains of various heights. A surface energy balance is maintained allowing heat storage in the land, the build-up and decay of snow cover, and the growth and melting of sea ice. The model uses a fifteen minute time step and may be run for several years without severe penalties in computation time. Model validation includes comparison with climatic data and other modeling efforts as well as sensitivity …

Design study of a neutral injection system for the Fusion Engineering Research Facility (FERF) (open access)

Design study of a neutral injection system for the Fusion Engineering Research Facility (FERF)

From topical meeting on technology of controlled nuclear fusion; San Diego, California, USA (16 Apr 1974). The first stage of a design study of a 500- A, 65- to 100-keV injection system for a mirror-type fusion test reactor using converging beams of D and T atoms continuously injected into an open-ended Yin-- Yang magnetic field is described. Positive ions (D/sup +/ and T/sup +/) were chosen for the primary beam because of the reasonably high neutralization efficiency (68%). Beam power densities will be limited to about 4 kW/cm/sup 2/ because of electrode heating and the dimensions required to avoid voltage breakdowns in the three-stage, multiple-aperture accelerator. A plasma-source module suitable for these requirements consists of an arc chamber with thermionic filaments designed for 4,000-hr lifetimes and with three 2- x 35-cm gridded extraction areas. Beam neutralization is accomplished by char exchange in the D/ sub 2/ and T/sub 2/ gas flowing from the sour through ducts of the appropriate pressure and dimensions After neutralization the background pressure will be reduced to 3 x 10/sup -5/ torr by a two-stage differential pumping system, and the neutral beam density will be increased by a factor of 30 by convergence upon the reactor …
