This report presents the results of an updated study to determine the preparation, schedules and cost for restart of KE Reactor and the subsequent plutonium production and incremental conversion cost of sustained plant operation. The restart of Hanford`s KE Reactor features short startup time, large capacity, low cost, and high purity product. The study shows that KE Reactor can be restarted and achieve full power 7 months after authorization. Prestartup costs are $4,416,000 for labor and material with only $375,000 for facility repair and replacement. Over 375 kg of plutonium are produced in the first years and equilibrium operation is achieved near the end of the second year.

Search for Electromagnetic Production of Fractionally Charged Particles at NAL (open access)

Search for Electromagnetic Production of Fractionally Charged Particles at NAL

One of the most important investigations to be conducted during the early operation of NAL is the search for quarks. Several experiments have been proposed which will investigate quark production via the strong interaction. As we discuss below, however, there are serious arguments to suggest that the mass limits obtained will not be significantly higher than the current limits of 4 to 5 GeV. To circumvent these objections we propose a simple experiment based on e1ectromagnetic production of quarks. It would run inside the main ring with photons produced in the rotating c-o target. No presently approved quark experiment is sensitive to such production without modification of its proposed set-up.

Proposed Emulsion Experiment Search for Short Lived Particles at High Energies (open access)

Proposed Emulsion Experiment Search for Short Lived Particles at High Energies

It is proposed to conduct an experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory concerned with the search for new particles having lifetimes between 10{sup -17} and 10{sup -12} second. The experiment will be conducted with an emulsion chamber arranqement and will explore for particles with lifetimes too short to be observed directly with other instruments. Two sidelines of the experiment will be concerned with an improved measurement of the lifetime of the neutral pion and the search for gamma ray bundles arising from higher mass resonances which cannot decay by pion emission.

THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIATION EXPOSURE OF ASTRONAUTS BY RADIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES January 3, 1972 Through April 2, 1972 (open access)

THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIATION EXPOSURE OF ASTRONAUTS BY RADIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES January 3, 1972 Through April 2, 1972

Only two of the fecal specimens collected inflight during the Apollo 15 mission were returned for analysis. Difficulty in obtaining reasonably accurate radiation dose estimates based on the cosmogenic radionuclide content of the specimens was encountered due to the limited sampling. The concentrations of {sup 22}Na, {sup 40}K, {sup 51}Cr, {sup 59}Fe, and {sup 137}Cs are reported. The concentrations of 24 major, minor, and trace elements in these two specimens were determined. Most concentrations are typical of those observed previously. Major exceptions are extremely low values for selenium and extraordinarily high values for rare earth elements. The net {sup 210}Po activities in the Apollo 11 and 12 Solar Wind Composition foils and in the Apollo 8 and 12 spacecraft reflective coatings due to lunar exposure have been determined. Equilibrium concentrations of 0.082 {+-} 0.012 disintegrations cm{sup -2} sec{sup -1} of {sup 222}Rn in the lunar atmosphere and 0.0238 {+-} 0.0035 disintegrations cm{sup -2} sec{sup -1} of {sup 210}Po on the lunar surface have been calculated for Oceanus Procellarum. A summary of a paper entitled, "Radon-222 Activity at Oceanus Procellarum," and the text of a manuscript entitled, "Radon-222 in the Lunar Atmosphere," are included as appendices.
