COLLECTIVE-FIELD ACCELERATION (open access)

COLLECTIVE-FIELD ACCELERATION

Diverse methods proposed for the acceleration of particles by means of collective fields are reviewed. A survey is made of the various currently active experimental programs devoted to investigating collective acceleration, and the present status of the research is briefly noted.

Passage of Charged Particles Through Matter (open access)

Passage of Charged Particles Through Matter

Some commonly used formulas and principal data on the passage of fast charged particles through matter are presented. The areas covered include: atomic collision cross sections; stopping power for heavy charged particles; range-energy relations; shell corrections and I-values; straggling of heavy particles; coulomb and multiple scattering, and nuclear interactions; electrons; and mean energy for the formation of an ion pair. POSTIRRADIATION EXAMINATION OF CENTRIFUGALLY BONDED EBR-11 DRIVER FUEL

BNW was requested by AEC/DRDT to assist ANL with the postirradiation examination of EBR-II driver fuel (U + 5Fs) pins that became shortened during irradiation. To date, three irradiated pins and one nonirradiated pin were examined.

Fields and First Order Perturbation Effects in Two-DimensionalConductor Dominated Magnets (open access)

Fields and First Order Perturbation Effects in Two-DimensionalConductor Dominated Magnets

General expressions are given for the field and its expansion coefficients produced by a two dimensional conductor structure surrounded by iron with a circular inside boundary. Saturation effects are described in terms of the tangential field at that boundary. The effects of the following types of perturbations are discussed: displacement, rotation and error excitation of a conductor, change of conductor shape, and modification of the inside contour of the iron. A design criterion is given to minimize the error fields associated with a displacement of the iron shell relative to the conductor structure. Expressions for the force and torque acting on a conductor are derived both for the unperturbed and perturbed magnet. Formulae are presented that allow convenient and fast evaluation of pertinent quantities with a computer when the structure is too complicated for hand computations.

Compact Thermoelectric Converter. Phase II-C. Final Report, 1 July 1968-30 June 1969

Tubular thermoelectric module technology was advanced during Phase II-C of the Compact Converter Program to the extent that the baseline temperature for module testing was raised from 1000°F 1100°F. Significant development work was performed to produce a system utilizing a heat pipe that transmitted thermal energy from an external heat source to a tubular module.

Thulium-170 oxide heat source experimental and analytical radiation and shielding study

The results of radiation dose rates measurements performed with three Thulium-170 oxide radioactive sources (initial strengths 20.7, 10.0 and 5.0 thermal watts) through aluminum, stainless steel, lead, tungsten and depleted uranium absorbers at two source-to-dose-point separation distances agreed well with corresponding calculated values, thereby validating the calculation technique.

The Effect of Soil Parameters on Earth Penetration of Projectiles (open access)

The Effect of Soil Parameters on Earth Penetration of Projectiles

The purpose of this study can be divided into the three following parts: 1) to present complete sets of data obtained for projectile penetration into soil targets of precisely known properties, and to describe how to build and test these targets; 2) to present a numerical method of data analysis for empirically determining the force on a projectile, during penetration; and 3) to demonstrate how physical soil parameters, as well as impact velocity and a projectile property influence penetration.
