CYANAMIDE: A POSSIBLE KEY COMPOUND IN CHEMICAL EVOLUTION (open access)

CYANAMIDE: A POSSIBLE KEY COMPOUND IN CHEMICAL EVOLUTION

The prebiotic synthesis of phosphorus-containing compounds--such as nucleotides and polynucleotides--would require both a geologically plausible source of the element and pathways for its incorporation into chemical systems on the primitive Earth. The mineral apatite, which is the only significant source of phosphate on Earth, has long been thought to be problematical in this respect due to its low solubility and reactivity. However, in the last decade or so, at least two pathways have been demonstrated which would circumvent these perceived problems. In addition, recent results would seem to suggest an additional, extraterrestrial source of reactive phosphorus. It appears that the 'phosphorus problem' is no longer the stumbling block which it was once thought to be.

Loading and operating conditions for charge of five NIE-1 fuel tubes and two target assemblies in KER-1 or KER-2 Production Test IP-584-D, Supplement B

Production Test IP-584-D, Supplement B authorized the irradiation of target assemblies in KER-1 and KER-2. Furthermore, the production test authorized that these target assemblies be irradiated with)other approved production tests; for this test, N Reactor inner fuel elements (NIE-1) will be irradiated. The production test required that specific operating conditions and loading patterns would be approved by the managers of Testing, Process and Reactor Development, and Process Technology Subsections prior to charging.

Hanford contribution for the eighteenth high temperature fuels committee meeting, May 19--21, 1964 (open access)

Hanford contribution for the eighteenth high temperature fuels committee meeting, May 19--21, 1964

Metallic thorium uranium fuel elements continue to show excellent irradiation performance in high temperature pressurized water coolant. Volume expansion measurements made after 2.1{times}10{sup 20} fissions/cm{sup 3} (6200 MWD/T) at fuel temperatures above 500 C shows no indication of fission gas-in-duced swelling. Analysis of fuel swelling data from tubular elements shows apparent effect of geometry (restraint) on both low temperature volume expansion and the temperature at which accelerated volume expansion initiates. Evidence of grain boundary tearing has been observed in tubular metallic uranium fuels irradiated in 1600 pos water coolant. Volume expansion due to two types of structural damage have ben observed uranium - 2 w/o zirconium alloy irradiated to 0.25 a/o burnup at temperatures up to 550 C.

Analysis of alternatives: Plutonium button-line improvements

Reduction of Pu nitrate solution to metal is accomplished in the button line portion of the Remote Mechanical Line. Several areas of deficiency exist in the facility, which must be corrected in order to maintain continuity. In December 1963, a study was undertaken to define and evaluate the operational and economic parameters pertinent to deciding to improve or replace the button line. This paper documents the study and presents the conclusions and recommendations.

Preliminary engineering study intermediate range instrumentation

Instrumentation studies and the Hazards Review have demonstrated the need for instrumentation which will scram the reactors if the exponential rate of power increase is excessive. A development program has demonstrated the feasibility of such a system. This document defines the program necessary to provide Intermediate Range exponential rate protection in the safety circuits of five reactors, provides justification for the project, and presents estimates of the cost and schedule required to accomplish the program.

Recommended high-tank temperatures for maintenance of high-tank backup support, Revision 3

Purpose of this note is to recommend revised curves for the high-tank temperature required to maintain adequate high-tank backup support at the six small reactors. Compliance with the conditions shown on these curves will ensure adequate high-tank flow rates following the simultaneous loss of electric and steam power.
