The Crystal Structure of RbU$sub 6$F$sub 2$$sub 5$

The compound RbU/sub 6/F/sub 25/ has a hexagonal crystal structure with the parameters a/sub o/ = 8.195 plus or minus 0.002 A and c/sub o/ = 16.437 plus or minus 0.002 A. This compound is believed to be isomorphous to KU/sub 6/F/sub 25/ and KTh/sub 6/F/sub 25/. The conditions under which chlorine trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride could be removed from uranium hexafluoride by fractional distillation are discussed. (auth)

An Estimate of Neutron-Induced Radioactivity in Soil From Weapon Detonations (open access)

An Estimate of Neutron-Induced Radioactivity in Soil From Weapon Detonations

An estimate is presented which is intended to establish an expected order of magnitude of resulting thermal neutron-induced activity and relative production of stable and radioactive isotopes in soil. The estimate is based on a one MT weapon (100%) fusion detonated at the surface of Nevada Test Site soil. (W.D.M.)

Fission and Corrosion Product Activities in Main Coolant and Atmosphere of the Vapor Container (open access)

Fission and Corrosion Product Activities in Main Coolant and Atmosphere of the Vapor Container

Fission products, which may leak from the fuel and activated corrosion products from stainless steel surfaces, influence the design of several systems which support the main coolant system. Since the radioactivity in the main coolant resulting from these impurities must be limited to reasonable levels during operation, a purification system becomes important. Air conditioning of the vapor container as a result of possible main coolant leakage may be necessary during and after operation to remove airborne activity. After shutdown, treatment and disposal of active effluents becomes the function of a waste disposal system. Activities are tabulated, by individual isotopes, for 10,000 hours of full power operation. Preparation of dense, metal-grade UF$sub 4$ from ores and concentrates (open access)

Preparation of dense, metal-grade UF$sub 4$ from ores and concentrates

In a process for the preparation of dense, metalgrade UF/sub 4/, the sulfuric acid solution of uranium prepared either from ore of concentrate is treated with a kerosene solution of an amine, the uranium extracted, then stripped from the solvent into hydrochloric acid. Hydrofluoric acid and cupric sulfate are added to the pregnant strip solution and UF/sub 4/ precipitated by bubbling SO/sub 2/ through the hot solution. AN ANALYSIS OF THE MAGNESIUM-CO$sub 2$ REACTIONS IN TERMS OF A REACTOR ENVIRONMENT (open access)

AN ANALYSIS OF THE MAGNESIUM-CO$sub 2$ REACTIONS IN TERMS OF A REACTOR ENVIRONMENT

The hazards associnted with the use of magnesium capsules in a CO/sub 2/- cooled reactor system have been analyzed, and consideration has been given to incidents which could lead to excessive temperature excursions and factors which could significantly reduce the ignition temperature of magnesium alloys. Methods of reducing the hazards associated with the Calder Hall type of reactor are discussed, and an experimental approach with which to define more aaccurately conditions that would lead to ignition is suggested.
