Overview of advanced process control in welding within ERDA (open access)

Overview of advanced process control in welding within ERDA

The special kinds of demands placed on ERDA weapons and reactors require them to have very reliable welds. Process control is critical in achieving this reliability. ERDA has a number of advanced process control projects underway with much of the emphasis being on electron beam welding. These include projects on voltage measurement, beam-current control, beam focusing, beam spot tracking, spike suppression, and computer control. A general discussion of process control in welding is followed by specific examples of some of the advanced joining process control projects in ERDA.

Present status of mirror stability theory (open access)

Present status of mirror stability theory

A status report of microinstability as it applies to 2XIIB and MX theory for mirror machines is presented. It is shown that quasilinear computations reproduce many of the parameters observed in the 2XIIB experiment. In regard to large mirror machines, there are presented detailed calculations of the linear theory of the drift cyclotron loss-cone mode, with inhomogeneous geometry and nonlinear diffusive effects. Further, the stability of a mirror machine to the Alfven ion-cyclotron instability is assessed, and the Baldwin- Callen diffusion is estimated for a spatially varying plasma. (auth)

Status of 2XIIB plasma confinement experiments (open access)

Status of 2XIIB plasma confinement experiments

This report describes the status of 2XIIB neutral beam injection experiments with stabilizing plasma. The stream suppresses ion-cyclotron fluctuations and permits density to 5 x 10$sup 13$ cm$sup -3$. The ion energy is 13 keV, and electron temperature reaches 140 eV. Plasma confinement increases with ion energy and n tau reaches 7 x 10$sup 10$ cm$sup -3$.s at 13 keV. The n tau energy scaling is consistent with electron drag and ion-ion scattering losses. Buildup on a streaming plasma in a steady-state magnetic field is described. (auth)

Assessment of groundwater management at Hanford (open access)

Assessment of groundwater management at Hanford

A comprehensive review of the groundwater management and environmental monitoring programs at the Hanford reservation was initiated in 1973. A large number of recommendations made as a result of this review are summarized. The purpose of the Hanford Hydrology Program is to maintain a groundwater surveillance network to assess contamination of the natural water system. Potential groundwater contamination is primarily a function of waste management decisions. The review revealed that although the hydrology program would greatly benefit from additional improvements, it is adequate to predict levels of contaminants present in the groundwater system. Studies are presently underway to refine advanced mathematical models to use results of the hydrologic investigation in forecasting the response of the system to different long-term management decisions. No information was found which indicates that a hazard through the groundwater pathway presently exists as a result of waste operations at Hanford. (CH)

Scintillation response of lithium fluoride (open access)

Scintillation response of lithium fluoride

Thesis. Lithium fluoride crystals, with TlF added to the charge, were prepared by the Bridgman- Stockbarger method. The scintillation response to photon energies between 25 and 1250 keV for these crystals and a commercially prepared LiF (Ti) crystal was studied. The response of the LiF (Ti) crystal was compared to the response of an NE109 scintillator at 1250 keV. The dose response of the LiF (Ti) crystal was evaluated over the energy range 25 to 1250 keV. The absorption and emission spectra of the LiF (Ti) crystal are discussed. A historical review precedes the discussion. (auth)

200-GeV ISA with room temperature magnets (open access)

200-GeV ISA with room temperature magnets

A conceptual design study of 200-GeV proton intersecting storage accclerators with room temperature magnets is presented. The key to this study was thc desire to keep the electric power consumptiom to an acceptable level (40 MW). The design has been optimized by choosing small-gap (4 cm) aluminum coil dipoles operating at about 15 kG. The luminosity of this machine is limited to about 10/sup 32/ cm-/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ by transverse space-charg e effects. An order of magnitude higher luminositics can be obtained by adding a booster of modest cost. A novel vacuum system using distributed Ti-sublimation pumps results in considerable savings. A cost comparison with a high-luminosity superconducting machine is given. (auth)
