Test Plan for Radioactive Testing of a Vertical Direct Denitration Calciner

Stored solutions containing plutonium and nitric acid and possibly uranium thorium and minor amounts of other substances will be used for development and demonstration of a vertical calciner direct denitration process for conversion of those to stable storable PuO{sub 2} rich solids. Some of those solutions are quite dilute and very impure these require either pretreatment to make them suitable for calciner feed or an alternate stabilization method. Untreated scrap solutions containing some amounts of sulfate phosphate sodium and/or potassium may also be tested for suitability of direct denitration for conversion directly to PuO{sub 2}-rich solids. A vertical calciner will be used to demonstrate the direct denitration process for converting plutonium-bearing liquors to stable plutonium-rich solids. The calciner and some of its ancillary equipment were previously tested with non-radioactive chemicals to demonstrate operability.

Microstructural Imaging of Shock-Recovered Berea Sandstone and Quartz Sand Using Scanning Electron Microscopy

A number of shock-recovery experiments have been performed on Berea sandstone for different conditions: dry, water-saturated, hydrostatically water-pressurized and Helium gas-pressurized. The authors also conducted experiments with purified quartz sand in dry and water-saturated conditions with a grain size between 212 to 250 {micro}m and 250 to 300 {micro}m to compare with damaged Berea sandstone. The shock stresses in the range between 1.2 to 9.8 GPa were achieved by impacting projectiles accelerated by a single-stage light-gas gun. Different flyer plate thicknesses were used to produce different shock pulse durations. The water-pressurized sandstone targets were hydrostatically pressurized between 7.58-7.79 MPa, whereas the gas-pressure samples were pressurized to 27.5 MPa using helium gas. The microstructural damage of all specimens is being investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to determine differences for these conditions. In this report they will present the results of the systematic SEM investigations for each experiment. The scientific results and discussions including X-ray computed micro tomography and statistical analysis are presented elsewhere. Overall, they collected around 1600 SEM pictures, which are available in electronic form on Compact Disks (CDs). They also provide the results of the laser particle analysis on the CDs.

Aluminum-Free Semiconductors and Packaging

The use of laser diodes instead of flashlamps to pump solid state lasers generally results in lighter weight, more compact systems with improved efficiency and reliability. These traits are important to a wide variety of applications in military, industrial and other areas. Common solid state laser systems such as yttrium aluminum garnet doped with neodymium or ytterbium (Nd:YAG and Yb:YAG, respectively) require pump light in the 800 to 1000 nm range, and such laser diodes have typically been fabricated in the AlGaAs material system on a GaAs substrate. Unfortunately, the presence of aluminum in or near the light-generating regions of these devices appears to limit their high-power performance, so for improved performance attention has turned to the aluminum-free (''Al-free'') material system of InGaAsP on a GaAs substrate. Laser diodes in this system offer the wavelength coverage similar to the AlGaAs/GaAs material system, and early results suggest that they may offer improved high-power performance. However, such Al-free diodes are more challenging to manufacture than AlGaAs-based devices. The goal of this LDRD project has been to evaluate Al-free diode technology in comparison with conventional AlGaAs-based structures for use in diode-pumped solid state lasers. The Operations Manual contains general descriptions of all the process, safety and facility systems in the CVDF, a general CVD operations sequence, and has been developed for the spent nuclear fuel project (SNFP) Operations Organization and shall be updated, expanded, and revised in accordance with future design, construction and startup phases of the CVDF until the CVDF final ORR is approved.

Seismic analysis of a reinforced concrete containment vessel model

Pre-and post-test analytical predictions of the dynamic behavior of a 1:10 scale model Reinforced Concrete Containment Vessel are presented. This model, designed and constructed by the Nuclear Power Engineering Corp., was subjected to seismic simulation tests using the high-performance shaking table at the Tadotsu Engineering Laboratory in Japan. A group of tests representing design-level and beyond-design-level ground motions were first conducted to verify design safety margins. These were followed by a series of tests in which progressively larger base motions were applied until structural failure was induced. The analysis was performed by ANATECH Corp. and Sandia National Laboratories for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, employing state-of-the-art finite-element software specifically developed for concrete structures. Three-dimensional time-history analyses were performed, first as pre-test blind predictions to evaluate the general capabilities of the analytical methods, and second as post-test validation of the methods and interpretation of the test result. The input data consisted of acceleration time histories for the horizontal, vertical and rotational (rocking) components, as measured by accelerometers mounted on the structure's basemat. MEMS Reliability in a Vibration Environment

MicroElectricalMechanical Systems (MEMS) were subjected to a vibration environment that had a peak acceleration of 120g and spanned frequencies from 20 to 2000 Hz. The device chosen for this test was a surface-micromachined microengine because it possesses many elements (springs, gears, rubbing surfaces) that may be susceptible to vibration. The microengines were unpowered during the test. The authors observed 2 vibration-related failures and 3 electrical failures out of 22 microengines tested. Surprisingly, the electrical failures also arose in four microengines in the control group indicating that they were not vibration related. Failure analysis revealed that the electrical failures were due to shorting of stationary comb fingers to the ground plane.

A methodology for selecting an optimal experimental design for the computer analysis of a complex system

Investigation and evaluation of a complex system is often accomplished through the use of performance measures based on system response models. The response models are constructed using computer-generated responses supported where possible by physical test results. The general problem considered is one where resources and system complexity together restrict the number of simulations that can be performed. The levels of input variables used in defining environmental scenarios, initial and boundary conditions and for setting system parameters must be selected in an efficient way. This report describes an algorithmic approach for performing this selection.

This Corrective Action Decision Document/Closure Report (CADD/CR) has been prepared for Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 500: Test Cell A Septic System, in accordance with the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order. Located in Area 25 at the Nevada Test Site in Nevada, CAU 500 is comprised of one Corrective Action Site, CAS 25-04-05. This CADD/CR identifies and rationalizes the U.S. Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office's (DOE/NV's) recommendation that no corrective action is deemed necessary for CAU 500. The Corrective Action Decision Document and Closure Report have been combined into one report based on sample data collected during the field investigation performed between February and May 1999, which showed no evidence of soil contamination at this site. The clean closure justification for CAU 500 is based on these results. Analytes detected were evaluated against preliminary action levels (PALs) to determine contaminants of concern (COCs) for CAU 500, and it was determined that the PALs were not exceeded for total volatile organic compounds, total semivolatile organic compounds, total petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, total Resource Conservation and Recovery Act metals, gamma-emitting radionuclides, isotopic uranium, and strontium-90 for any of the soil samples collected.
