High-temperature ceramic-to-metal seal development (open access)

High-temperature ceramic-to-metal seal development

A ceramic-to-metal seal was developed capable of operation up to 1200 deg C in a cesium environment. A new metallizing technique based on a promising tungsten--yttria system reported by LASL, was studied. Effects of mixture age, delay time between metallizing and brazing, and high-temperature outgassing were measured and found critical to the final joint strength. Seals were prepared by brazing metallized Lucalox to niobium with a 60 vanadium--40 niobium braze alloy. A complex braze thermal history was required for a high-strength joint. A seal coat was developed which inhibits corrosive interaction between the braze alloy and alumina at high temperatues. With careful control of metallizing and brazing techniques, room-temperature joint strengths equivalent to or better than early 700 deg C seals were obtained. Seals were subjected to thermal stability and cesium corrosion proof tests; they remained leak tight. (40 figures) (auth)

FAST BEAM CHOPPERS FOR THE ELECTRON-RING ACCELERATOR (open access)

FAST BEAM CHOPPERS FOR THE ELECTRON-RING ACCELERATOR

Two beam choppers were constructed which produce an approximately square, 20-ns pulse of 3+-MeV electrons out of the best portion of the 300-ns Astron beam or an 8-{micro}s microwave electron linac beam for injection into the electron-ring accelerator (ERA) compressor. The choppers are impedance-matched traveling-wave devices which deflect the beam with equal strength electric and magnetic forces, and are powered with either three-electrode spark gaps or thyratrons and a 20-ns pulse line. The electron beam is biased out of the beam-transport system with a dc magnetic field, and switched into it with the chopper.

Presentation charts for 3560-KW incident (open access)

Presentation charts for 3560-KW incident

On 6-19-68, the KW reactor was scrammed. The cause of the scram was a flow blockage of a coolant channel. Results were extensive fuel jacket melting and about 20 curies of I-131 released to the river. This report covers the following: (1) review of incident and recovery operation; (2) investigation of incident; and (3) technological studies and analysis.

Thermal Data Fitting with Orthogonal Functions and Combined Table Generation. The FITAB Program (open access)

Thermal Data Fitting with Orthogonal Functions and Combined Table Generation. The FITAB Program

A FORTRAN IV program to represent experimental thermal data with orthogonal functions and to tabulate the thermodynamic functions is described. The use of a more general algorithm permits the generation of power series which can contain positive or negative powers. Further, it is possible to start generation at any power with any term-to-term increment in the exponent. This allows the use of an equation with a leading cubic term for very low temperature heat capacities. Enthalphy data can be approximated with a leading reciprocal temperature term. Appropriate coding allows analytical generation of the thermodynamic functions. The methods of combining thermal data are reviewed and discussed. The program combines any number of heat capacity and/or enthalpy segments (from formats logically selected at the time of execution) in order to generate a complete tabulation presented in rounded, directly publishable form.

A METHOD FOR STATIC-FIELD COMPRESSION IN AN ELECTRON-RING ACCELERATOR (open access)

A METHOD FOR STATIC-FIELD COMPRESSION IN AN ELECTRON-RING ACCELERATOR

A review of methods for static-field compression of an electron ring is shown to suggest advantages for a method in which there is no axial acceleration or deceleration of the ring. In the method proposed here the static magnetic field itself is o such a character that the electrons are neither focused nor defocused in the axial direction. The integrity and movement of the ring through the compressor is controlled by a small traveling magnetic well. The feasibility of creating such a traveling well is discussed, and an example is presented of a current distribution capable of producing the static magnetic field of the compressor.
