Analysis of SBTF quadelliptical furnaces. [LMFBR]

A computer model was developed which predicts the axial temperature profile and heat flux at the outer surface of the test section of the Sodium Boiling Test Facility constructed by the Engineering Technology Division at ORNL. The model was in agreement with observed temperature profiles at furnace power levels representative of single phase, dual phase, and dry-out operations. A parametric study demonstrated the effect of sodium flow rate and surface emissivities on the predicted temperature profile. It was concluded that axial conduction in the Hastelloy tube and sodium must be incorporated into the model to improve accuracy.

Computerized transportation model for the NRC Physical Protection Project. Versions I and II

Details on two versions of a computerized model for the transportation system of the NRC Physical Protection Project are presented. The Version I model permits scheduling of all types of transport units associated with a truck fleet, including truck trailers, truck tractors, escort vehicles and crews. A fixed-fleet itinerary construction process is used in which iterations on fleet size are required until the service requirements are satisfied. The Version II model adds an aircraft mode capability and provides for a more efficient non-fixed-fleet itinerary generation process. Test results using both versions are included.

Equilibrium water vapor pressure and total moisture content measurements on TATB

Equilibrium water vapor pressure and total moisture content were measured for samples of TATB-10 percent Kel-F, TATB-6 percent Estane, and TATB-9 percent Viton in a temperature range from 296 to 365/sup 0/K. Heats of vaporization were obtained for temperatures from 296 to 333/sup 0/K. Below 333/sup 0/K the water in the samples behaved as dissolved water and the Clausius-Clapeyron equation was applicable, while above 333/sup 0/K the water dissolved in the samples became very mobile and for practical purposes it was considered to be available in its entirety in the gas phase. The total moisture content of the samples was found to be <0.0021, 0.0102, and 0.0165 wt. percent for TATB-Kel-F, TATB-Estane, and TATB-Viton, respectively. The data indicate that the transport of water in the samples was controlled by the permeation characteristics of the binders. Fair agreement was found between published relative permeation constants for the three binders and those derived from the experimental results.

Personnel monitoring measurements

A personnel monitoring program must include a well integrated combination of dose determination methods, and should not depend on a single dosimetry system. Many of the necessary techniques have become well developed and dependable, such as the personnel gamma dosimeters in use today. However, other monitoring methods are still not adequate. The two most important personnel monitoring problems remaining are development of personnel neutron dosimeter and in-vivo measurement of plutonium at sublung burden levels. Although there are a few techniques under development to attack these problems, satisfactory long-term solutions will require much more work. As the developments in nuclear power and medicine continue, the need for solutions to these problems will intensify. (auth)

Permeability of granular beds emplaced in vertical drill holes

To determine the permeabilities of granular materials emplaced in vertical drill holes used for underground nuclear tests, an experiment at the USDOE Nevada Test Site (NTS) was conducted. As the hole is being filled, falling material increases pressure above and within the granular beds beneath. When the filling operation starts or stops, a transient pressure response occurs within the beds; measurements of this response in beds of various compositions were made. The permeabilities after emplacement were found by matching analytical predictions of the response to these data. This information is useful in assuring the containment of nuclear tests conducted in such drill holes.

Determination of the rate and efficiency of nitrogen transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton using nitrogen-15 as a tracer. Final report

The rate of assimilated nitrogen transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton was measured under field conditions for natural mixed zooplankton populations using a nitrogen-15 tracer technique. The variability in rates, which ranged from 0.261 to 1.792 gram-atoms of phytoplankton nitrogen/gram-atoms of zooplankton nitrogen/24 hours, are thought to reflect a variability in the age frequency distribution of the zooplankton population. The data were used to calculate assimilation efficiencies which were found to range from 25.4 to 66.1 percent. The efficiency of 66.1 percent was taken to be the most accurate measurement for reasons discussed in the text.

Electric utility application of wind energy conversion systems on the island of Oahu

This wind energy application study was performed by The Aerospace Corporation for the Wind Systems Branch of the Department of Energy. The objective was to identify integration problems for a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) placed into an existing conventional utility system. The integration problems included environmental, institutional and technical aspects as well as economic matters, but the emphasis was on the economics of wind energy. The Hawaiian Electric Company utility system on the island of Oahu was selected for the study because of the very real potential for wind energy on that island, and because of the simplicity afforded in analyzing that isolated utility.

Quantitative analysis of thin foils using backscattering measurements. [He implants in Pd; composite Al/parylene]

Backscattering of 1.25-MeV protons and alpha particles from thin foils is used for a nondestructive quantitative elemental analysis of thin foils. The detection of helium that had previously been implanted into a 1350 A palladium foil and the analysis of a composite aluminum and parylene foil are presented as examples of this technique.
