The traveler held discussions with Subgroup-II members to keep track of the activities of this group in which the traveler is a member. Bearing staking process investigation using a designed experiment

A designed experiment was performed on the staking operation of a miniature precision bearing. Three variables were controlled during the experiment: staking force, tool diameter, and bearing-to-wheel fit. The study showed that the current staking tool diameter is highly sensitive to staking force and to bearing-to-wheel fit, whereas a smaller diameter tool is not. The study also shows that, with the current process, bearing movement under a 100-Newton (N) force can be estimated at 0.009 in. to 0.0029 in. The current specification is 0.002 in. and should be revised to 0.0035 in. 4 figs.

Chemical interactions in multimetal/zeolite catalysts

Research is proposed on two groups of zeolite based catalysts that contain two transition elements. In one group both metals are fully reduced, in the other group one element is left as a positive ion; it can act as a chemical anchor'', or as a catalyst promoter for the reduced metal. The objective is to explore the potential of such materials for designing superior catalysts for synthesis and conversion of hydrocarbons and other energy carriers. ENDOR, EXAFS, CO-FTIR and TPD will be used to identify the interaction of Mn[sup 2+] ions with Rh[sub n] particles in the same zeolite cage. EXAFS at the Kedge of Fe and Pd, FTIR and Moessbauer spectroscopy will be used to characterize Fe ions and alloyed Fe atoms in PdFe/NaHY. The catalysts will be probed with CO hydrogenation and conversion of hydrocarbons. Methods Which proved successful in our study of Y supported bimetal systems will be applied to identify the state of Pt and Cu in ZSM-5, a catalyst system holding large promise for NO abatement, even in the presence of oxygen.

Development of a Coal Quality Expert

This is the tenth Technical Progress Report, describing work performed under DOE Contract No. DE-FC22-9OPC89663. The work falls under DOE's Clean Coal Technology Program category of Advanced Coal Cleaning.'' The 51-month project will provide the utility industry with a PC expert system to confidently and inexpensively evaluate the potential for coal cleaning, blending, and switching options to reduce emissionswhile producing lowest cost electricity. Specifically, this project will: (1)Enhance the existing Coal Quality Information System (CQIS) database and Coal Quality Impact Model (CQIM) to allow confident assessment of the effects of cleaning on specific boiler cost and performance. (2)Develop and validate a methodology, Coal Quality Expert (CQE) which allows accurate and detailed predictions of coal quality impacts on total power plant capital cost, operating cost, and performance based upon inputs from inexpensive bench-scale tests. The project consists of the following seven tasks: Project Management, Coal Cleanability Characterization, Pilot-Scale Combustion Testing, Utility Boiler Field Testing, CQIM Completion and Development of CQE Specification, Develop CQE and CQE Workstation Testing and Validation.

The Evaluation Cooperation Subgroup, Actinide Data in the Thermal Energy Range,'' met primarily to discuss problems related to the temperature coefficient of U-235 fueled thermal reactors and nuclear data on eta at thermal neutron energies, the number of neutrons emitted per neutron absorbed. The preliminary results of the eta measurements done by M. Moxon of Harwell at Oak Ridge were presented and preliminary results by H. Weigman of Geel with a new method were presented. All three measurements from Geel show a pronounced down-slope of eta with decreasing neutron energy and both measurements by Moxon show only a very slight down slope. Acceptance of the Geel results would solve about one-third of the problem in the calculated reactor temperature coefficient. The Evaluation Cooperation Subgroup, 239-Pu Fission Cross Sections between 1 and 100 keV,'' met to discuss the 4% lower than the previously evaluated fission cross sections between 20 eV and 100 keV as evaluated from the fission data of the Weston and Todd and transmission data of J. A. Harvey (all of ORNL). These lower fission cross sections are discrepant with integral measurements, however, it is conceivable that there could be compensating effects, perhaps in the U-238 cross sections. A …

Sol-gel coatings for high power laser optics-past, present and future

An investigation into the preparation of sol-gel coatings for high power lasers was started at LLNL in 1983 and AR coatings were successfully developed for use in the Nova laser in 1984. Several other large lasers now use these coatings. Subsequent work on HR coatings resulted in AlOOH/SiO{sub 2} and later ZrO{sub 2} or HfO{sub 2}/SiO{sub 2} systems of good optical performance. The use of organic polymer binders gave increased damage threshold and enhanced optical performance. We are in the process of scaling up HR fabrication for substrates approximately 38 cm square. Concurrently we are developing sol-gel random phase plates for laser beam smoothing. These have a patterned surface design of silica which induces phase shifts in the beam by variation in the optical path length. Plates of this type on 80 cm diameter substrates have been used successfully on the Nova.

Hydrogen production in the K-Basin ion exchange columns, modules and cartridge filters

K-Basin uses ion exchange modules and ion exchange (IX) columns for removing radionuclides from the basin water. When the columns and modules are loaded, they are removed from service, drained and stored. After a few IX columns accumulate in storage, they are moved to a burial box. One of the burial box contains 33 columns and the other, six. The radionuclides act on the liquid left within and adhering to the beads to produce hydrogen. This report describes the generation rate, accumulation rate and significance of that accumulation. This summary also highlights those major areas of concern to the external (to Westinghouse Hanford Company [WHC]) reviewers. Appendix H presents the comments made by the external reviewers and, on a separate sheet, the responses to those comments. The concerns regarding the details of the analytical approach, are addressed in Appendix H and in the appropriate section.

The objectives of this project are to continue reservoir characterization of the Cypress Sandstone; to identify and map facies-defined waterflood units (FDWS); and to design and implement water-alternating-gas (WAG) oil recovery utilizing carbon dioxide (CO{sub 2}) The producibility problems are permeability variation and poor sweep efficiency. Part 1 of the project focuses on the development of computer-generated geological and reservoir simulation models that will be used to select sites for the demonstration and implementation of CO{sub 2} displacement programs in Part 2. Included in Part 1 is the site selection and drilling of an infill well, coring of the Cypress interval, and injectivity testing to gather information used to update the reservoir simulation model. Part 2 involves field implementation of WAG. Technology Transfer includes outreach activity such as seminars, workshops, and field trips.

A Task Adaptive parallel graphics renderer

This paper presents a graphics renderer which incorporates new partitioning methodologies of memory and work for efficient execution on a parallel computer. The Task Adaptive domain decomposition scheme is an image space method involving dynamic partitioning of rectangular pixel area tasks. The author shows that this method requires little overhead, allows coherence within a parallel context, handles worst case scenarios effectively, and executes efficiently with little processor synchronization necessary. Previous research in the area of memory and work decompositions for graphics rendering has been primarily limited to simulation studies and little practical experience. The algorithm presented here has been implemented on a scalable distributed memory multiprocessor and tested on a variety of input scenes. The author presents a theoretical and practical analysis in order to contrast its predicted and actual success. The implementation analysis indicates that load imbalance is the major cause of performance degradation at the higher processor counts. Even so, on a variety of test scenes, an average rendering speedup of 79 was achieved utilizing 96 processors on the BBN TC2000 multiprocessor with a processor efficiency range of 66% to 94%.

Most of the initial alloying work has been with the interior of pipe segments. The source electrode, an Inconel 625 rod, was inserted into carbon steel pipe segment cathode. Alloy layers were deposited on the interior surfaces of these segments; maximum thickness (8 [mu]) was obtained for a potential difference of 200 V.

A historical perspective on fifteen years of laser damage thresholds at LLNL

We have completed a fifteen year, referenced and documented compilation of more than 15,000 measurements of laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDT) conducted at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). These measurements cover the spectrum from 248 to 1064 nm with pulse durations ranging from < 1 ns to 65 ns and at pulse-repetition frequencies (PRF) from single shots to 6.3 kHz. We emphasize the changes in LIDTs during the past two years since we last summarized our database. We relate these results to earlier data concentrating on improvements in processing methods, materials, and conditioning techniques. In particular, we highlight the current status of anti-reflective (AR) coatings, high reflectors (HR), polarizers, and frequency-conversion crystals used primarily at 355 nm and 1064 nm.

WATER DIVERSION MODEL

The distribution of seepage in the proposed repository will be highly variable due in part to variations in the spatial distribution of percolations. The performance of the drip shield and the backfill system may divert the water flux around the waste packages to the invert. Diversion will occur along the drift surface, within the backfill, at the drip shield, and at the Waste Package (WP) surface, even after the drip shield and WP have been breached by corrosion. The purpose and objective of this Analysis and Modeling Report (AMR) are to develop a conceptual model and constitutive properties for bounding the volume and rate of seepage water that flows around the drip shield (CRWMS M&amp;O 1999c). This analysis model is to be compatible with the selected repository conceptual design (Wilkins and Heath, 1999) and will be used to evaluate the performance of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS), and to provide input to the EBS Water Distribution and Removal Model. This model supports the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) postclosure performance assessment for the Site Recommendation (SR). Gaugino mass without singlets

In models with dynamical supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector, the gaugino masses in the observable sector have been believed to be extremely suppressed (below 1 keV), unless there is a gauge singlet in the hidden sector with specific couplings to the observable sector gauge multiplets. We point out that there is a pure supergravity contribution to gaugino masses at the quantum level arising from the superconformal anomaly. Our results are valid to all orders in perturbation theory and are related to the ''exact'' beta functions for soft terms. There is also an anomaly contribution to the A terms proportional to the beta function of the corresponding Yukawa coupling. The gaugino masses are proportional to the corresponding gauge beta functions, and so do not satisfy the usual GUT relations.

Distributed System Intruder Tools, Trinoo and Tribe Flood Network

Trinoo and Tribe Flood Network (TFN) are new forms of denial of Service (DOS) attacks. attacks are designed to bring down a computer or network by overloading it with a large amount of network traffic using TCP, UDP, or ICMP. In the past, these attacks came from a single location and were easy to detect. Trinoo and TFN are distributed system intruder tools. These tools launch DoS attacks from multiple computer systems at a target system simultaneously. This makes the assault hard to detect and almost impossible to track to the original attacker. Because these attacks can be launched from hundreds of computers under the command of a single attacker, they are far more dangerous than any DoS attack launched from a single location. These distributed tools have only been seen on Solaris and Linux machines, but there is no reason why they could not be modified for UNIX machines. The target system can also be of any type because the attack is based on the TCP/IP architecture, not a flaw in any particular operating system (OS). CIAC considers the risks presented by these DoS tools to be high.
