Technical Department report on Production Test No. 313-58-M: Recovery of lead dipped slugs

A number of slugs have been dipped in lead, then Al-Si and canned. Laboratory experiments showed that the can and outer bonding layers could be removed by the standard caustic-nitrate treatment. The alloy layer was removed from several slugs by hot nitric acid without use of hydrofluoric acid. It was desired to extend the method to the plant process and to clean accumulated lead dipped pieces. Lead dipped slugs may be cleaned by the regular recovery process with a weight loss of about 0.03 lbs. per slug. Attempts to modify or shorten the procedure were not successful. Twenty-four (24) of the recovered slugs were canned satisfactorily.

Turbidity coagulant for Columbia River water

In this document, information about the need for a better compound to for filtering process water from the production reactors. It was found that the natural turbidity in the Columbia River was high enough to necessitate the use of a coagulant to minimize the passage of iron through filters. Tests indicated that Ferrisul was the better of the two compounds tested.

Production of Uranium Metal (open access)

Production of Uranium Metal

Experiments were carried out for the purpose of increasing production, efficiency, and purity of uranium metal. The electrolytic method as described by Driggs and Lilliendahl for the preparation of uranium metal was followed with but little deviation. The yield of metal at the very best was only 50%. The metal powder produced, at times, was very pyrophoric. Methods were found whereby the metal, at least in part, can be made from the oxides with an average yield of about 90%. The small amounts of sludge and slag accumulated in this modified process can readily be re-used in the electrolysis pot and, therefore, an overall yield of 96% can be obtained. Information accumulated from these experiments has been compiled in such a manner as to be readily available for factory use, for patent purposes and for future publication.

Concentration of C-2 Slag (open access)

Concentration of C-2 Slag

The bomb reaction slag produced at the ElectroMetallurgical X metal plant is at present divided into rich C-1 slag and lean C-2 slag by merely screening through a 4 mesh wire screen, the "on 4 mesh" material becomes the C-1 slag and the "thru 4 mesh" material becomes the C-2 slag. In the experiments covered by this report it was found that the concentration of the lean C-2 slag could be facilitated by the use of a 20 mesh screen for the slang separation in place of the 4 mesh screen, as the 20 mesh screen removed troublesome, small, hard lumps which passed the 4 mesh screen. Furthermore, it was found that the additional small lumps removed by the 20 mesh screen were just as rich in X metal as the larger lumps which make up the bulk of C-1 slag.
