The Snap Ii Power Conversion System Topical Report No. 12. Boiler Development

The SNAP II boilers which were designed are summarized. As shown by test results from the three boilers which were tested, a continuous progress in design was achieved. These designs were based on test data from both the SNAP I and SNAP II programs. As the quantity of data increased, physical models describing the heat transfer process were developed. These physical models provide the necessary correlation parameters which permit the extension of existing data to advanced design. Preliminary test sections were designed on the assumption that an allvapor nmodel which ignores the presence of the liquid phase during forced convection boiling could be used to describe the process quantitatively. The conventional Dittus-Boelter equation was applied with the increase in the vapor flow along the tube being ascribed to liquid evaporation. The assumption led to a design that fell short by about an order of magnitude since the exit qualities were only in the range of 10%, far less than required for complete vaporization. As a result, a revision in the concept of the mechanics of boiling was found necessary and a theoretical analysis was formulated, based on a dry wall'' or dropwise'' type boiling phenomenon. The test results of the …

Correlation of Critical Mass Data on Light Water Moderated, Fully Enriched Uranium, Stainless Steel Reactors. Part 1 (open access)

Correlation of Critical Mass Data on Light Water Moderated, Fully Enriched Uranium, Stainless Steel Reactors. Part 1

Experimental data were collected on over 70 light water moderated, fully enriched uranium, stainless steel, critical cores. An equation for the critical mass of cores with a buckling of 0.007 cm/sup -2/ that is lineally dependent on stainless steel volume fraction and grams of B/sup 10/ was compared with available critical experiments and found to yield reasonable results. A correlation method, relating buckling to ( xi SIGMA /sub s// SIGMA /sub a/) was found to fit the available experiments. (auth)

An Annotated Bibliography on the Effects of Radiation on Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions and on Chemisorption (open access)

An Annotated Bibliography on the Effects of Radiation on Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions and on Chemisorption

The 264 references were compiled primarily from a search of Chemical Abstracts, Nuclear Science Abstracts, and Dissertation Abstracts through December 1962. The annotations give the type of radiation, the catalysts investigated, and the test reactions used. The entries are cross-referenced, and indexes of the authors, catalysts, reactions, and type of radiation are provided. The compliation is limited to papers in which either heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, chemisorption, or the radiolysis of adsorbed substances was studied. Papers on the effects of ultraviolet light are not included. (auth)

Increasing the capacity of the Tory II-C Side Support System (open access)

Increasing the capacity of the Tory II-C Side Support System

The Tory II-C lateral suspension has been designed for 4 g`s of lateral acceleration of the duct. Calculations and model tests indicate that this requirement has been met or exceeded. In order to have a more realistic model to test, Tory II-C springs are going to be fitted around the full scale core slice which was previously built up. Instrumented accelerations of this assembly should give the most direct demonstration that is possible of the response of the system to flight. This memorandum discusses, knowing the capabilities of the present system, the design changes necessary to suit different maximum accelerations by increasing the capacity of the Tory II-C side support system.
