D-Zero Calorimeter Multiplan

This short report explains the parameters, and their basis, of the D-Zero calorimeter multiplan spread sheet Macintosh Multiplan worksheets have been found to be a valuable asset to the D-Zero design effort. The spread sheet contains parameters (constants) and results that come from the parameters. The full effect of changes in D-Zero calorimeter parameters can be calculated quite easily with Multiplan. When a change in a parameter is made, any results that pertain to that parameter automatically change also. This report will explain how some of the unobvious results were obtained.

D-Zero End Cap Calorimeter Inner Vessel Heater Documentation

There will be 48 finned strip heaters installed in each end cap calorimeter vessel. The strip heaters were specified and the lowest bid vendor submitted a sample heater which was tested. This engineering note will document specifications of the heater, test procedure used, and results of the test. The finned strip heaters were of stainless steel construction. The lowest bid was $45.00 per heater from TEMPCO Electric Heater Corporation. A sample heater from TEMPCO was inspected, cold shocked tested to -320 F, and found to be acceptable.

D-Zero Instrument Air System Humidity Transmitter Evaluation

This report shows the findings that resulted in the purchase of the optimum dew point hygrometer for use in the D-Zero instrument air system (see diagram 2 on page 9). The hygrometer will monitor the air syste m to insure that the dew point level does not go above the normal operating output of the driers (this precise value will be determined during initial system start-up). The following criteria was used in the evaluation: (1) Long term durability; (2) Minimum calibration; (3) Indicate a dew point level down to -40 C accurately; (4) Designed to work in a low humidity region; (5) Minimum maintenance; (6) Fast response time; and (7) Lowest cost provided all other criteria is met.

Zero-Net Power, Low-Cost Sensor Platform (open access)

Zero-Net Power, Low-Cost Sensor Platform

Numerous national studies and working groups have identified very low-power, low-cost sensors as a critical technology for increasing energy efficiency, reducing waste, and optimizing processes. This research addressed that need by developing an ultra low-power, low-cost sensor platform based on microsensor (MS) arrays that includes MS sensors, very low-power electronics, signal processing, and two-way data communications, all integrated into a single package. MSs were developed to measure carbon dioxide and room occupancy. Advances were made in developing a coating for detecting carbon dioxide and sensing thermal energy with MSs with a low power electrical readout. In addition, robust algorithms were developed for communications within buildings over power lines and an integrated platform was realized that included gas sensing, temperature, humidity, and room occupancy with on-board communications.

Zeroing in on Supersymmetric Radiation Amplitude Zeros

Radiation amplitude zeros have long been used to test the Standard Model. Here, we consider the supersymmetric radiation amplitude zero in chargino-neutralino associated production, which can be observed at the luminosity upgraded LHC. Such an amplitude zero only occurs if the neutralino has a large wino fraction and hence this observable can be used to determine the neutralino eigenstate content. We find that this observable can be measured by comparing the p{sub T} spectrum of the softest lepton in the trilepton {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup {+-}} {tilde {chi}}{sub 2}{sup 0} decay channel to that of a control process such as {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup +} {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup -} or {tilde {chi}}{sub 2}{sup 0} {tilde {chi}}{sub 2}{sup 0}. We test this technique on a previously generated model sample of the 19 dimensional parameter space of the phenomenological MSSM, and find that it is effective in determining the wino content of the neutralino.

Zeroth-order inversion of transient head observations

A high-frequency, asymptotic solution for transient head,appropriate for a medium containing smoothly varying heterogeneity,provides a basis for efficient inverse modeling. The semi analyticsolution is trajectory based, akin to ray methods used in modeling wavepropagation, and may be constructed by post processing the output of anumerical simulator. For high frequencies, the amplitude sensitivities,the relationship between changes in flow properties and changes in headampliude, are dominated by the phase term which may be computed directlyfrom the output of the simulator. Thus, transient head waveforms may beinverted with little more computation than is required to invert arrivaltimes. An applicatino to synthetic head values indicates that thetechnique can be used to improve the fit to waveforms. An application totransient head data from the Migration experiment in Switzerland revealsa narrow, high conductivity pathway within a 0.5 m thick zone offracturing.

Zgoubi user`s guide. Version 4

The computer code Zgoubi calculates trajectories of charged particles in magnetic and electric fields. At the origin specially adapted to the definition and adjustment of beam lines and magnetic spectrometers, it has so-evolved that it allows the study of systems including complex sequences of optical elements such as dipoles, quadrupoles, arbitrary multipoles and other magnetic or electric devices, and is able as well to handle periodic structures. Compared to other codes, it presents several peculiarities: (1) a numerical method for integrating the Lorentz equation, based on Taylor series, which optimizes computing time and provides high accuracy and strong symplecticity, (2) spin tracking, using the same numerical method as for the Lorentz equation, (3) calculation of the synchrotron radiation electric field and spectra in arbitrary magnetic fields, from the ray-tracing outcomes, (4) the possibility of using a mesh, which allows ray-tracing from simulated or measured (1-D, 2-D or 3-D) field maps, (5) Monte Carlo procedures: unlimited number of trajectories, in-flight decay, etc. (6) built-in fitting procedure, (7) multiturn tracking in circular accelerators including many features proper to machine parameter calculation and survey, and also the simulation of time-varying power supplies. ZIRCONIUM FLUORIDE PHASE STUDIES. I. A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF SOLID PHASES

Solid phases in the zirconium-nitric acid-hydrofluoric acid system were identified by chemical and x-ray diffraction methods. Five different compounds were crystallized at various temperatures and fluoride concentrations from fluoride or fluoborate solutions. These include the mono- and trihydrates of zirconium tetrafluoride, plus three hydrolysis products which possess a fluoride- to-zirconium ratio of approximately three, yet produce different x-ray patterns. The trifluorides crystallize from solutions of low fluoride-to-zirconium ratio at temperatures of below 90, 65 to 100, and above above 95 deg C, respectively. Solubilities of these basic trifluorides were measured at 25 deg C in 1, 6, and 16M nitric acid. (auth)

ZIRCONIUM RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. Progress Report No. 9 for September 15, 1950 to October 15, 1950

A zirconium crystal bar, weighing 29 pounds and 1 5/16 inches in diameter by 8 feet in over-all length, was prepared, using pear-shaped zirconium couples to join the filament to the electrodes. This crystal bar was the largest produced to date in the 16-in.-diam. de Boer unit. The design of the couplings was modified to incorporate improvements indicated by the initial run, and another run is in progress. Binary alloys of Zr and Ni, Cr, and Si, as well as a zirconium alloy containing Fe, Al, and Si, were prepared for use as feed material in the small pyrex de Boer bulbs. The transfer of these elements from the feed to the crystal bar is being investigated. The rate of deposition and the type of crystal structure obtained with additions of various amounts of iodine are being studied. (auth)

This report details activities for the time period of November, 1987 through January, 1988. Further results are presented from the axially heterogeneous assembly ZPPR-17, a part of the JUPITER-III program. The loading of the ZPPR-17C assembly, with 13 half-inserted control rods, is described along with operational measurements, calculation models, and measurements and prediction of criticality. From ZPPR-17A, calculated and measured results are given for reaction rates and measured results for bowing, expansion and small sample worth experiments. From the earlier metal-fuel ZPPR-15 program results are given for measurements and calculations of Doppler reactivity coefficients.
