SNAP 10A FS-3 reactor performance (open access)

SNAP 10A FS-3 reactor performance

SNAP 10FS-3 was the first flight-qualified SNAP reactor system to be operated in a simulated space environment. Prestart-up qualification testing, automatic start-up, endurance period performance, extended operation test and reactor shutdown are described as they affected, or were affected by, overall reactor performance. Performance of the reactor control system and the diagnostic instrumentation is critically evaluted.

An appraisal of the Hanford high-level waste program (open access)

An appraisal of the Hanford high-level waste program

As set forth in the CPD Waste Management Program (HW-63958), new and improved methods of waste processing are planned to be initiated at Hanford. A major part of this program is concerned with the high-level wastes from the Purex Plant, with major objectives being the control of long-term hazards, the insurance of production continuity, and the attainment of positive waste accountability at reasonable over-all costs. Specific plans for the disposal of Purex wastes are based on the use of high temperature calcination for immobilization and volume reduction of the solvent extraction raffinates (1WW). Four major steps are involved, each of which is of basic importance to the program objectives. These are: (1) interim 1WW storage and removal for calcination, (2) calcination, (3) primary containment of the calcined waste, and (4) long-term storage. Immobilization of coating wastes and organic wash wastes is also planned, either by tank solidification methods or possibly by inclusion in the calcination feed stream. This document was dated September 15, 1960.

Calculation of the Vibrational Frequencies of Ethylene (open access)

Calculation of the Vibrational Frequencies of Ethylene

In this report, approximations which have been shown to simplify the calculation of the normal modes of paraffin hydrocarbons are tested for olefinic hydrocarbons by application to C2H4, CH2CD, C2D4. The results indicate that the method should suffice for the low-frequency models below about 0.1 ev energy, and may be adequate for all vibrations as far as he needs of neutron scattering are concerned,

Serious Radiation Event - Hanford Capabilities (open access)

Serious Radiation Event - Hanford Capabilities

The need for an industrial plant to know its capabilities to rescue personnel and minimize damage to vital operating equipment in the event of a serious accident has long been recognized. Although Hanford`s experience has been without a serious radiation event as characterized in this report, it is prudent to have an objective assessment of the capabilities which do exist and an analysis of the general capabilities which the plant should possess to maximize the effectiveness of rescue action in such an event and to limit the consequences to personnel, vital equipment, and the surrounding environs. It in the purpose of this report to: (1) make an assessment of the capabilities which are currently in place at Hanford to handle the multitude of serious problems arising from a serious radiation event; and (2) define the level of capability which the Hanford Atomic Products Operation should possess to minimize the consequences of such an accident. It is not the intent of this presentation to discuss the possibilities, probabilities, prevention or courses of serious radiation events.
