Electrostatic Effects in the Deposition of Aerosols on Cylindrical Shapes. Technical Report No. 15 (open access)

Electrostatic Effects in the Deposition of Aerosols on Cylindrical Shapes. Technical Report No. 15

A basic study of the mechanism of deposition of small particles on cylindrical collectors in the presence of electrostatic forces has been made. Theoretical equations predicting the efficiency of collection have been derived and solved with a digital computer. The solution of these equations is shown. The deposition of liquid aerosol particles on cylindrical collectors was measured experimentally for a range of electrostatic conditions. The experimental results agree with the theory. An experimental study was made of the effect of electrical charges on aerosol particles on the filtration efficiency of glass fiber mats. Experiments were also made on the effect of placing a potential on a mat of fine wire and on filtration by a mat of a tangled wire dipole. (auth)

Determination of Sr{sup 90}, Sb{sup 125}, Cs{sup 137} and absolute beta activities in First Cycle Supernatent

This report discusses procedures have been established for determining the absolute activities of Sr{sup 90}, Sb{sup 125}, Cs{sup 137}, and gross beta in First Cycle Supernatant. These procedures are also valid for other samples such as scavenged Radioactive Waste (RAW), the primary restriction being that the age of the material be at least 250 days so that any Sr{sup 89} activity (53 day half-life) is negligible. With the exception of the gross beta analysis the results are believed to be accurate to within 10%.

Trip report, Battelle Memorial Institute, March 8--9, 1955

W.J. O`Leary and R.R. Herries visited BMI in company with C.C. McBride, SRL, to discuss the results of subcontract research on the extended surface fuel element program and to discuss with BMI personnel the programs included in the recent contract extension. A summary of results are given in the following. Double and triple melts from two 9--10 pound ingots of arc-melted Horizon`s thorium showed decreasing porosity. Physical and chemical data, on these as well as on eight previous double melted ingots, are being obtained. The problems involved in obtaining uniform castings of uranium-aluminum alloy for co-extrusion billets were discussed, with emphasis upon those phases to be investigated at BMI. A program was outlined to evaluate the effects of outgassing, by vacuum annealing, on the corrosion resistance of nickel-plated uranium. Data obtained from diffusion studies at BMI show that the mutual diffusion at high temperatures of thorium and aluminum is slow, with the diffusion of the thorium into the aluminum proceeding somewhat faster than that of the aluminum into the thorium. Possible methods of applying an inner cladding of aluminum to a tubular uranium fuel element were discussed. ``Half-dollar`` size uranium corrosion samples, nickel-plated and press-clad with 30-mil aluminum at 10 …

Data Relating to Hanford Mined Graphite (2273-D) Samples Annealed at NAA (open access)

Data Relating to Hanford Mined Graphite (2273-D) Samples Annealed at NAA

On 2/8/1950, there was mined from process tube 2273 in D pile at Hanford a quantity of graphite power, which was expected to show the most extensive radiation damage of any graphite available at that time. A series of samples of this powder were annealed in 100 degrees increments from 100 degrees to 2000 degrees C at this labaoratory. There were returned to Hanford and shipped by them to the National Bureau of Standards for total stored energy measurements. The present memorandum is comprised of a description of the annealing procedure used here, curves giving the detailed annealing history of each sample, and various curves derived from data obtained from these samples at Hanford and at the National Bureau of Standards.

1953 at Hanford (open access)

1953 at Hanford

The report summarizes Hanford`s operation in 1953. The 38% increase in separated plutonium over the 1952 level was one measure of achievement. 1953`s output was more than seven times that of 1947, the first full year of General Electric`s operation of Hanford. Although much of this gain resulted from new reactors, some was due to improved safety devices, and much was due to increased knowledge of the controlling factors which permitted more efficient operation of old piles and better design of new ones. Year-by-year reductions in the cost of converting uranium to plutonium tell the real story of progress at Hanford. The annual production gains could have been made by building many 1944 model piles, though at fantastic cost. Contrasted with this is the actual case--a few new, improved piles plus more production from the old ones.
