FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE DIFFUSION BONDING OF URANIUM (open access)

FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE DIFFUSION BONDING OF URANIUM

Studies were made on the feasibility of effecting diffusion bonding in U, using pure Au as a catalyst, and by solid state diffusion without the use of a catalyst. It was found that the Au appeared to have promising characteristics for catalyzing the diffusion bonding reaction in joining uranium to itself. Phase diagrams are given U-Au, U--Cr, U--Co, U--Cu, U--Fe, U--Mn, and U--Ni alloys. (P.C.H.)

The Neutral Organophorus Compounds as Extractants (open access)

The Neutral Organophorus Compounds as Extractants

The properties of neutral organophosphorus compounds as solvents, in particular, solvents which form solvation complexes with inorganic molecules, were considered. Physical properties of the compounds are described. Phospnines, phosphine oxides, phosphinates, phosphonates, and phosphates were studied with respect to complex formation with inorganic compounds. The extraction of mineral acids by these compounds is discussed. (M.C.G.)

Criteria of the Post-Operative Cells, E-MAD Facility (open access)

Criteria of the Post-Operative Cells, E-MAD Facility

The purpose of this report is to present information on the design requirements of the post-operative cells at the E-MAD facility. It contains our reference operation plan, requirements for the post-operative cells, the cell service area, the warm machine shop and the manipulator repair area. This report is based on the best information presently available. The reference operation plan will be changed, as required, to be compatible with the E-MAD final design and the final design of the reactor.

Organic Reactor Technology Quarterly Report, April 1-June 30, 1962 (open access)

Organic Reactor Technology Quarterly Report, April 1-June 30, 1962

The deposition of film was studied in irradiated circulating loops, in which both grounded and insulated plates were in the irradiated coolant volume; the purpose of these tests was to determine the effect on rate of film formation of charges generated on particulate matter or coolant molecules in the radiation field. Heavier deposits were found on the grounded plates and currents up to 30 microamp were measured flowing to this plate. Tests in the rocking cell showed that techniques are now available whereby this apparatus can be used with confidence to screen film-forming characteristics of coolant compositions. It was demonstrated that iron percarbide (Fe/sub 20/C/sub 9/) could be made under conditions comparable to those in the OMRE. It was made from an iron chelate by carbon monoxide reduction and emphasizes the possible importance of oxygen containing chelate in the transport of iron and deposition of film. The nature of the impurities occurring in commercial Santowax was examined and some highly colored, oxygenated material isolated. The hexaphenyls produced in irradiation of m- and p-terphenyls and in the reaction of polyphenyls with hydrogen atoms was studied. Further work was initiated in the area of synthesis of reference hexaphenyls, but synthesis of new …

Reactor Development Program Progress Report, September 1962 (open access)

Reactor Development Program Progress Report, September 1962

Progress is reported on development of liquid metal and water cooled reactors. Details are included concerning the EBWR, Borax V, ZPR-III, ZPR-VI, AFSR, EBR-I, EBR-II, and FARET. Developments in general reactor technology are reported in applied reactor physics, reactor fuel and components development, heat engineering, and chemical separations. Advanced systems research and development was devoted to the Argonne Advanced Research Reactor and a conduction- cooled reactor to substitute for isotope heat sources. Safety studies are reported on thermal and fast reactors. (J.R.D.)
