Networking with China

This paper presents the history and current status Of computer networking between IHEP in Beijing, China and the rest of the world, starting with no links at the beginning of 1987 thru X.25 public networks and dial up links, to the installing, in March 1993, of one of the first dedicated 64 kbps satellite computer links between China and the outside world. In May 1994, IHEP became the first Chinese institution to have a fully operational world-wide Internet connection. Experience with this dedicated link between SLAC and IHEP will be presented together with future plans to add a land line between KEK and IHEP and to extend the links within China.

As a starting point for planning the physics measurements to be made during the start up of the pile, this memorandum describes a procedure for each of three cases, a large poisoned pile, running at power with a small unpoisoned pile but marking physics measurements with the large pile before going to power, and a similar case except that the physics measurements on the large pile are done after running with power on the small pile This memorandum should by no means be taken as a final proposal. It has resulted in uncovering shortcomings in instrumentation which have been covered in other memoranda. Estimates of the time required for the physics measurements are given. These will furnish you with a basis for discussion with the Operating Supervision to estimate the total time required for each step.

The energy dependence of film blackening is discussed and shown graphically. The exposure range of films is discussed, and blackening is plotted vs exposure for DuPont No. 502, and for the less sensitive DuPont No. 351. A plan is then described for monitoring radiation exposure to workers by requiring the worker to carry an x-ray film of dental packet size in a badge designed for the purpose. (LEW)

The uranium metal, as discharged from the piles in the 100 Areas, contains the alpha emitting product, plutonium, in concentration in the neighborhood of 150--250 grams per metric ton, along with similar amounts of beta and gamma fission elements. It is the purpose of the Separations Plant to effect the separation of this product from the uranium metal and fission elements, and to prepare a concentrated, relatively pure solution of plutonium nitrate as the final product of the Hanford Plant. This section of the manual discusses the chemistry of the separations process, describes the buildings and equipment provided for carrying out the various steps in the operation, and presents the detailed operating procedures used. There are included, in many instances, references to other documents presenting a more detailed view of a specific point in the process.

Investigation of the use of a recycle stream to mediate hydrogen transfer to improve the conversion of eastern oil shale to liquid products

The processing of eastern oil shale has long been known to require the addition of hydrogen to increase the oil yield. Several researchers, have investigated the use of both high pressure hydrogen and hydrogen donor solvents. Much of the donor solvent work has used pure,compounds such as tetralin and has not addressed the use of-a more realistic solvent such as one derived from the production process itself. The work reported herein is for the research Task 1.2.2, Process Studies, in the Annual Project Plan, October l, 1990--September 30, 1991, of the Cooperative Agreement. In the study, a shale oil-derived, recycle oil was used to mediate the transfer of hydrogen to eastern oil shale. The work was divided into two main parts which correspond to the two main portions of the Hydrogen-Extraction (H-E{trademark}) process: (1) the shale oil extraction which involves the use of a donor solvent to aid in the extraction of the shale oil and (2) the regeneration of the donor solvent to a hydrogen-rich state ready for recycle. The results of the investigation to evaluate shale oil extraction using a shale oil-derived donor solvent suggest that temperature had the, greatest effort on organic conversion. The Effect of Radiation on the Corrosion of Metals by Water. (Problem No. 322 MLC 2213)

Long-time tests have been made on the effect of various types of radiation on the corrosion of 2S aluminum in simulated W water. In no case was any acceleration of corrosion by the radiation observed; the effect of radiation, if any, appeared to be a protective one. Deuteron irradiation did accelerate the corrosion of mild steel at low flow rates in hot water of pH 6 to 7, but no appreciable effect was observed with copper, stainless steel, or tuballoy. The general theory of the effect of radiation on corrosion is discussed, with the conclusion that no acceleration of corrosion by radiation is to be expected in most cases of practical interest. Building 313 operations

On June 3 the writer was detailed to the 300 Area to study operations in Bldg, 313. Seven days were spent with C shift in the caning and dipping area. In this period, a system of coordinating press cycles was developed to utilize machine time most effectively. Subsequently, a brief amount of time was spent working in a design of the can cleaning area so as to incorporate the aluminum can etching operation and facilitate the handling and flow of materials. The next stage of perhaps a week was devoted to a study of inspection and testing methods. The final period of one week was utilized mainly to develop a method of storing finished material so as to provide the maximum amount of piece-classification flexibility without incurring enormous burdens in the movement of material to later stages of the operation.

Progress on finding suitable water conditions for start-up had been approached as closely as possible with our present equipment and information as to the requirements. The water composition should be attainable that is not corrosive or build up a film rapidly, and we have means available for removal of such films. Slug classification methods were analyzed from a dimensional standpoint. Analysis of current CMX data was undertaken with the objective of establishing allowable variations in pressure drop in W-tubes due to film formation. Calculations were made of the number of slugs which have jacket temperatures in excess of various values, for various loading arrangements. On July 26 the proposed loading of the discharge nozzle is to be checked on CMX tube 1 during an inspection shut-down. Evacuation procedures in the event of a catastrophe in the 100-B area were discussed with W.E. Rapp during a visit to that area on July 19, 1944. Tests for slug leaks will not be less severe with water in the autoclave than with steam, and have a considerable chance to be more decisive, especially if a wetting agent is added to the water.
