Meeting at BMI on electroplating uranium for extrusion cladding, November 8, 1956
This report discusses a meeting held on November 8, 1956 at BMI, Columbus, Ohio, for the following purposes: To determine the best method of electroplating uranium cores for extrusion cladding; to determine if there were any shortcomings in the SRL method of plating which could be the cause of the poor bonding experienced with internally extrusion-clad tubes; and to make what corrections and revisions were necessary in SRL plating procedure to assure the optimum quality of nickel electroplate on the basis of present information.

Hindered Diphenoquinones: Diradicals of Oxygen
Attempts were made to prepare a diphenoquinone having substituents in 2,2'-positions in order to prevent the planarity of the molecule and get a diradical of oxygen. The 2,2'-dimethyl-5,5'-di-t-butyldiphenoquinone was prepared and was shown to be in equilibrium with a small amount of diradical. This compound slowly polymerizes.

EFFECT OF SPACER DENSITY ON HEAT TRANSFER AND PRESSURE DROP IN THE ART FUEL- TO-NaK HEAT EXCHANGER
Heat transfer and isothermal friction characteristics of the experimental ART fuel-to-NaK heat exchanger have been determined for three degrees of spacer density. The data appear to indicate that for a given heat exchanger pressure drop, the heat transfer cocfficient is almost independent of the spacer density; as the spacer density is decreased, the Reynolds modulus increases to such an extent that the Nusselt modulus does not change significantly. For a given available pressure drop, with decreased spacer density, a larger flow rate exists allowing the same heat removal rate with a lower axial temperature change or a greater heat removal rate with the same axial temperature change. RADIOFREQUENCY ACCELERATION II
A radiofrequency system consisting of 16 cavities, strongly coupled together by transmission line, is analyzed. This system can be regarded as a single cavity operating in a particular mode, and is found to be a practical system for the accelerator. Also methods ef coupling r-f power into the system are considered. The r-f system with beam loading is analyzed for stability, and a relationship determined for the range ef the cavity tuning over which the system is stable. (auth)

AN ORACLE CODE FOR CALCULATION OF FERMI AGES BY NUMERICAL INTEGRATION
An oracle code was prepared for the calculation of Fermi ages by numerical integration. The code is designed to compute values of The effects of and fast and slow diffusion constants for two-group calculations from cross section data. The values of The effects of and the diffusion constants may be obtained for mixtures of any or all of sixteen elements. While the present tapes do not contain cross sections for sixteen different elements, cross sections may be changed in a simple and rapid manner. The thermal cross sections used for the calculation of slow diffusion constants have not yet been critically evaluated, and caution should ba exercised in their use. ( auth)

IGNITION OF THORIUM METAL
The metal ignited in the course of preparing metal chips to be used as feed stock in a nonconsumable electrode arc melting furance. Preparatory to accumulating stock for the arc melting experiment, the Th slivers were pickled to remove surface oxide and stored in a glass storage vessel until needed. A time lapse of three weeks occurred before removal from the storage vessel. A technician began cutting the samples irto thinner segments with a pair of hand shears when there was a flash of light and an accompanying explosion which blew the sample from his hands. A rapid decomposition of something associated with the surface of the sample was believed to have caused the accident. (W.L.H.)

Tabulation of radioactive liquid waste disposal facilities
The following lists describe facilities in the Hanford project for disposal of radioactive liquid waste into the ground. Most are for planned disposals, but included are several which were not intended to become contaminated, but did, and several others which may be expected to become contaminated similarly. Not included are sanitary, powerhouse and a few other liquid disposal facilities which may receive only insignificant amounts of radioactive material. The lists do not include solid waste disposal facilities, or others (such as tanks, buried barrels) in which contaminated liquid is contained against entry into the soil.
