Development of a Coal Quality Expert. Final technical progress report No. 12, [January 1--March 31, 1993]

During the past quarter, Tasks 3, 4, 5, and 6 were active. Task 3 Pilot Scale Combustion Testing activity included data analysis of pilot- and bench-scale combustion samples in support of the development of CQE slogging and fouling models. Under Task 4, field testing at the fifth host utility site -- New England Power Service Company`s Brayton Point Unit 3 -- was completed in March with the testing of the alternate coal. Test plans were finalized for the sixth and final field test to be performed at Brayton Point Unit 2 in April 1993. Tasks 5 and 6 activities were directed at design and development of CQE base classes and objects, continued formulation and integration of CQE algorithms and submodels, development of the user interface prototype, and preparation of the Fireside Advisor.

M2 priority screening system for near-term activities: Project documentation. Final report December 11, 1992--May 31, 1994 (open access)

M2 priority screening system for near-term activities: Project documentation. Final report December 11, 1992--May 31, 1994

From May through August, 1993, the M-2 Group within M Division at LANL conducted with the support of the LANL Integration and Coordination Office (ICO) and Applied Decision Analysis, Inc. (ADA), whose purpose was to develop a system for setting priorities among activities. This phase of the project concentrated on prioritizing near-tenn activities (i.e., activities that must be conducted in the next six months) necessary for setting up this new group. Potential future project phases will concentrate on developing a tool for setting priorities and developing annual budgets for the group`s operations. The priority screening system designed to address the near-term problem was developed, applied in a series of meeting with the group managers, and used as an aid in the assignment of tasks to group members. The model was intended and used as a practical tool for documenting and explaining decisions about near-term priorities, and not as a substitute for M-2 management judgment and decision-making processes.

Technical Assessment: WRAP 1 HVAC Passive Shutdown (open access)

Technical Assessment: WRAP 1 HVAC Passive Shutdown

As the result of careful interpretation of DOE Order 6430.lA and other DOE Orders, the HVAC system for WRAP 1 has been greatly simplified. The HVAC system is now designed to safely shut down to Passive State if power fails for any reason. The fans cease functioning, allowing the Zone 1 and Zone 2 HVAC Confinement Systems to breathe with respect to atmospheric pressure changes. Simplifying the HVAC system avoided overdesign. Construction costs were reduced by eliminating unnecessary equipment. This report summarizes work that was done to define the criteria, physical concepts, and operational experiences that lead to the passive shutdown design for WRAP 1 confinement HVAC systems.

Carbon cycle modeling calculations for the IPCC (open access)

Carbon cycle modeling calculations for the IPCC

We carried out essentially all the carbon cycle modeling calculations that were required by the IPCC Working Group 1. Specifically, IPCC required two types of calculations, namely, ``inverse calculations`` (input was CO{sub 2} concentrations and the output was CO{sub 2} emissions), and the ``forward calculations`` (input was CO{sub 2} emissions and output was CO{sub 2} concentrations). In particular, we have derived carbon dioxide concentrations and/or emissions for several scenarios using our coupled climate-carbon cycle modelling system.

The front-end electronics for the L3 Silicon Microvertex Detector (open access)

The front-end electronics for the L3 Silicon Microvertex Detector

The L3 detector, located at the LEP storage ring at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research), has recently installed a silicon microvertex detector (SMD). The purpose of the SMD is to enhance the tracking capabilities of L3 and to provide increased vertex measurement precision for tagging b-jets in the search for the Higgs boson, when LEP doubles its center of mass energy for the LEP 200 running. The subject of this article is the fabrication and testing of the front-end electronics for the SMD. The article is organized into several sections. The first section describes the SMD, the second section discusses the front-end electronics, the third section presents the testing procedures and the results of the tests.

NASA HSRP Emissions Scenarios Committee meeting, June 7, 1993 (open access)

NASA HSRP Emissions Scenarios Committee meeting, June 7, 1993

This primary purpose of this plan is to establish a process to ensure data integrity in the process of assembling aircraft emission scenario data sets from component data developed and provided by various sources. A component data set is one for a particular aircraft use (i.e. scheduled airline). A scenario data set is an ensemble set for a particular time. A secondary purpose is to help identify possible discrepancies or inconsistencies in the component data sets developed elsewhere or in the scenario data sets. This plan covers activities involved in assembling aircraft emission scenario data sets and by the component data set producers in supplying information to support evaluation of the component data sets. It does not cover work by the data producers to validate their work in developing the component data sets or to establish the fundamental soundness of the component data sets.

NCSU PULSTAR Reactor instrumentation upgrade (open access)

NCSU PULSTAR Reactor instrumentation upgrade

The Nuclear Reactor Program at North Carolina State University initiated an upgrade program at the NCSU PULSTAR Reactor in 1990. Twenty-year-old instrumentation is currently undergoing replacement with solid-state and current technology equipment. The financial assistance from the United States Department of Energy has been the primary source of support. This interim report provides the status of the first two phases of the upgrade program.
