Development of a coal cleaning control system (open access)

Development of a coal cleaning control system

The US Department of Energy selected the Battelle-Electric Power Research Institute-Science Applications International Corporation team to evaluate and develop on-line slurry ash, percent solids, and sulfur analysis instrumentation and process control technology. The project's objectives were (1) to develop an accurate, versatile, easy to use, on-line coal slurry analyzer and (2) to develop control strategies for analysis, control, and optimization of advanced and conventional coal-cleaning plant. The project's scope included (1) the installation of a slurry test loop, ash, percent solids, and sulfur instruments; (2) evaluation of instrument accuracy with various coals, under various slurry conditions; and (3) assessment of the cost and benefits to be derived from on-line analysis and control 12 refs., 40 figs., 16 tabs.

Experimental development of a multi-solid fluidized bed reactor concept (open access)

Experimental development of a multi-solid fluidized bed reactor concept

The Multi-Solid Fluidized bed reactor system uses 2-stages to gasify coal at high throughputs to produce a range of products in compact reactors without requiring an oxygen plant. Data generated on the process has shown that approximately 20% by weight of the incoming coal can be converted to liquid products and an additional 20% to a fuel gas with a heating value in the range of 600 Btu/SCF. The remainder of the coal is converted to a char coproduct that, if desired, can be used within the process to generate steam or be removed from the system as a product. The relative amounts of these coproducts can be adjusted by changing process operating conditions. Sulfur in the coal exits the process primarily in the fuel gas. The fuel gas accounts for about 85% of the coal sulfur with another 10% contained in the liquid products. The circulating medium in the MSFB process also provides unique potential for the process. By using catalytically active materials, the chemical composition of the liquids or gases produced can be potentially altered to minimize the amount of upgrading necessary. Chemically active circulating materials such as a sulfur scavenger to reduce or eliminate the requirement for …

Characterization and modification of particulate properties to enhance filtration performance (open access)

Characterization and modification of particulate properties to enhance filtration performance

The specific objectives of this project are to characterize the particulate properties that determine the filtration performance of fabric filters, and to investigate methods for modifying these particulate properties to enhance filtration performance. Inherent in these objectives is the development of an experimental approach that will lead to full-scale implementation of beneficial conditioning processes identified during the project. The general approach has included a large number of laboratory evaluations to be followed by optional field tests of a new successful conditioning processes performed on a sidestream device. This project was divided into five tasks. The schedule followed for these tasks is shown in Figure 4. Tasks 2 and 3 each focus on one of the two complementary parts of the project. Task 2 Parametric Tests of Ashes and Fabrics, evaluates the degree to which ash properties and fabric design determine filtration performance. Task 3 Survey of Methods to Modify the Particle Filtration Properties, provides a literature review and laboratory study of techniques to modify ash properties. The results of these two tasks were used in Task 4 Proof-of-Concept Tests of Methods to Modify Particle Filtration Properties to demonstrate the effects on filtration performance of modifying ash properties. The findings of …

Electrostatic precipitation of condensed acid mist (open access)

Electrostatic precipitation of condensed acid mist

This project addresses the problem of acid mist formed by condensation of sulfuric acid vapor in flue gas from coal-fired utility boilers. Acid mists can sometimes constitute a significant portion of the total particulate emissions from power plants burning high-sulfur coals. Complete condensation of 10 ppM of acid vapor produces a condensed acid mass loading of about 0.02 gr/dscf or 0.03 lb/MBtu, equivalent to the total allowable mass emissions under the revised (1979) New Source Performance Standards (2). The purpose of this project is to develop and demonstrated a compact, wet electrostatic collector for condensed acid mist in power plant flue gas. The project is organized in two phases. Phase I involved the WESP fabrication, laboratory and pilot combustor testing, and computer modeling. Phase II involves the solicitation of a utility demonstration site, preliminary site measurements, and planning for the demonstration test program. Only Phase II work will be addressed in this discussion which includes: site selection, site measurements, computer modeling and demonstration plan, and phase II reporting. 9 refs., 11 figs., 7 tabs.

Electrostatic precipitation of condensed acid mist (open access)

Electrostatic precipitation of condensed acid mist

This project addresses the acid mist that is formed by condensation of sulfuric acid vapor in flue gas from coal-fired utility boilers. An acid mist can be formed whenever the flue gas temperature approaches the prevailing acid dew point. This commonly occurs when the gas is subjected to rapid adiabatic cooling in a wet scrubber system for flue gas desulfurization. Acid mists can also sometimes result from unexpected temperature excursions caused by air inleakage, load cycling, and start-up operations. A wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP) is the best control option for acid mist. The mist would blind a fabric filter and attach glass fiber fabrics. A wet ESP is required because the acid would quickly corrode the plates in a conventional dry ESP. The wet ESP also offers the advantages of no rapping reentrainment and no sensitivity to fly ash resistivity. Therefore, this program has been structured around the use of a compact, wet ESP to control acid mist emissions. Progress to date is discussed. 7 refs., 1 fig.
