The role of soft (metallic) film in tribological behavior of ceramic materials

The friction coefficient and wear rate in structural ceramic materials are often too high to make them attractive for applications requiring dry sliding. The role of a thin soft silver film in improving the tribological characteristics of silicon nitride materials is investigated in this study. In a pin-on-disc contact configuration in reciprocating motion, the friction coefficient was reduced by about 50% and the wear rate by one to two orders of magnitude. The friction reduction is thought to be due to the reduction of the contact interface shear strength by the presence of the soft film. The wear rate reduction is likely due to modification of the contact stresses by the film. Combined, these two factors lead to a decrease in the magnitude of the damaging tensile stresses. The durability and thus the effectiveness of the film is very dependent on the bond strength (i.e., adhesion strength) between the film and the substrate. 21 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Research is ongoing to develop a reactor to convert synthesis gas to alcohol. Our objective during this quarter was to complete Task 2, calibration and automation of GC analysis protocols, and Task 3B, development of a dynamic response technique to determine the relevant parameters and of the algorithms for data acquisition and analysis for parameter estimation including the computer codes. In addition, we have started to work on Task 4, determination of the reaction kinetics in the CSTR we have designed. 3 figs., 1 tab.

Research continued on the design of a chemical reactor for synthesis gas conversion. During the second quarter our objective was to continue with Task 2 and start on Task 3. Task 2 involved standardization and automation of GC analysis protocols. Task 3, as stated in the work breakdown schedule, was the modification and automation of the trickle bed reactor and performing the initial factorial design experiments. We have decided to modify this task by expanding it to incorporate determination of the hydrodynamic and transport parameters of the trickle bed reactor in order to isolate and study just the reaction parameters. 1 fig.

CSDP: The seismology of continental thermal regimes

This is a progress report for the past one year of research (year 3 of 5-year project) under the project titled CSDP: Seismology of Continental Thermal Regime'', in which we proposed to develop seismological interpretation theory and methods applicable to complex structures encountered in continental geothermal areas and apply them to several candidate sites for the Continental Scientific Drilling Project. The past year has been extremely productive especially in the area of interpretation theory, including the following two major break-throughs. One is the derivation of an integral equation for time-dependent power spectra, which unified all the existing theories on seismic scattering (including the radiative transfer theory for total energy and single and multiple scattering theories based on the ray approach) and offers more complete and economical solutions to the problems of seismic scattering and attenuation. The other is the new formula for synthetic seismograms for layered media with irregular interfaces, combining the T-matrix method for an arbitrary shaped inclusion and the method of global generalized reflection/transmission coefficients for layered media. Both breakthroughs will enable us to deal with seismic observations in complex earth structures more efficiently and accurately. ASSESS (Analytic System and Software for Evaluating Safeguards and Security) update: Current status and future developments

The Analytic System and Software for Evaluating Safeguards and Security (ASSESS) has been released for use by DOE field offices and their contractors. In October, 1989, we offered a prototype workshop to selected representatives of the DOE community. Based on the prototype results, we held the first training workshop at the Central Training Academy in January, 1990. Four additional workshops are scheduled for FY 1990. ASSESS is a state-of-the-art analytical tool for management to conduct integrated evaluation of safeguards systems at facilities handling facilities. Currently, ASSESS focuses on the threat of theft/diversion of special nuclear material by insiders, outsiders, and a special form of insider/outsider collusion. ASSESS also includes a neutralization module. Development of the tool is continuing. Plans are underway to expand the capabilities of ASSESS to evaluate against violent insiders, to validate the databases, to expand the neutralization module, and to assist in demonstrating compliance with DOE Material Control and Accountability (MC A) Order 5633.3. These new capabilities include the ability to: compute a weighted average for performance capability against a spectrum of insider adversaries; conduct defense-in-depth analyses; and analyze against protracted theft scenarios. Molecular cloning and sequence of the thdF gene involved in the thiophene and furan oxidation by Escherichia coli

Since sulfur dioxide emission from burning high sulfur coals is a major contributor to acid rain, it is important to develop bacteria which are capable of efficiently removing the sulfur from coal before combustion. Inorganic sulfur can be removed from coal by certain strains of Thiobacillus or Sulfolobus; however the organic sulfur remains intransigent. Since high sulfur Illinois coals typically contain 60% to 70% of their sulfur in the form of the heterocyclic thiophene ring we have started to investigate the biodegradation of derivatives of thiophene and the corresponding oxygen heterocycle, furan. Our previous work resulted in the isolation of a triple mutant, NAR30, capable of oxidizing a range of furan and thiophene derivatives. However, NAR30 does not completely degrade thiophenes or furans and its oxidation of these compounds is slow and inefficient. We decided to clone the thd genes both in order to increase the efficiency of degradation and to investigate the nature of the reactions involved. 37 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.

Scalar and vector contributions to p p yields. Lambda. Lambda

A quark model which includes both scalar and vector contributions to the reaction {bar p}p {yields} {bar {Lambda}}{Lambda} is presented. DWBA calculations of differential cross sections, polarizations and spin correlation coefficients are compared to experimental results at several energies. The results are sensitive to details of the reaction mechanism and to the parameters of the {bar {Lambda}}{Lambda} interaction. 10 refs., 5 figs.

Spin effects in two-photon pair production (open access)

Spin effects in two-photon pair production

The two-photon mechanism for lepton pair production is investigated. It is found that for pairs produced in certain kinematical regions the process is dominated by magnetic, spin-flip currents. Anomalous e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} pairs observed in 17 Gev/c pion-proton collisions are found to be predominantly produced by this spin-flip mechanism. A comparison between {sup 4}He + {sup 4}He collisions and {sup 3}He + {sup 4}He collisions is proposed as an experimental way of distinguishing between the electric, non spin-flip mechanism and the magnetic, spin-flip mechanism. 16 refs.

Three-Family Top Quark Mass Spectrum

We expand upon our previous Monte-Carlo-type study of 3-family mass matrices which lead to the experimentally-determined KM matrix and satisfy the constraints imposed by B{sub d}--{bar B}{sub d} mixing, {vert bar}V{sub ub}/V{sub cb}{vert bar}, B{sub K} and CP violation. Scatter distributions in {vert bar}V{sub ub}V{sub cb}{vert bar}, {epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon} and x{sub s} vs m{sub t} are presented for the standard minimal Higgs structure as well as top quark mass histograms for the minimal and 2-doublet Higgs models. A top quark mass in the range of 100--200 GeV is strongly favored with all the constraints imposed, but if the lower bound on the CP-violating J-value is completely relaxed, a secondary probability peaking occurs in the mass histograms which lies above 220 GeV in the minimal Higgs model. 19 refs., 5 figs.

Top Quark Mass Spectrum From Flavor-Changing Processes

The input from flavor-changing processes is reviewed and results of several analyses are presented on the top quark mass spectrum without recourse to the neutral-current data. A top quark mass in the range 135 {plus minus} 25 GeV is much preferred, but a very massive top quark above 300 GeV can not be ruled out. Comments are made about the future use of the inclusive decay B {yields} {gamma} + X{sub S=1} for constraining the top quark mass. 24 refs., 2 figs.

The objective of this three year effort has been to develop an improved materials technology and fabrication process for limited volume production of 1 ft{sup 2} and 4 ft{sup 2} CdS/CdTe photovoltaic modules. The module stability objective by the end of this three year subcontract was to develop techniques to provide ten year life exploration with no greater than 10% degradation. In order to achieve these efficiency and stability objectives, the research program has been separated into tasks including: (1) analysis and characterization of CdS/CdTe Devices; (2) performance optimization on small cells; (3) encapsulation and stability testing; and (4) module efficiency optimization. 27 refs., 18 figs., 3 tabs.

Precision measurement of the half-life of sup 56 Co (open access)

Precision measurement of the half-life of sup 56 Co

Gamma rays from a mixed source of {sup 56}Co + {sup 46}Sc were measured in a Ge(Li) detector. The {sup 56}Co/{sup 46}Sc intensity ratios I{sub 847}/I{sub 889} were determined by careful analysis of line shapes and underlying backgrounds. Based on the known {sup 46}Sc adopted half-life value of 83.810(10) d, the fit to the intensity ratios corrected for {sup 46}Sc decay from 107 runs over an elapsed time of 172 days gave a half-life of 77.29(3) d. By combining this result with other published data we obtain a half-life of t{sub 1/2} = 77.27(3) d for {sup 56}Co. 16 refs., 3 figs.

Finnigan ion trap mass spectrometer detection limits and thermal energy analyzer interface status report and present capabilities

A new Finnigan ion trap mass spectrometer was purchased and installed at LLNL. Over a period of several months the instrument was tested under a variety of conditions utilizing a capillary gas chromatography interface which allowed separated organic compounds to be carried directly into the ion source of the mass spectrometer. This direct interface allowed maximum analytical sensitivity. A variety of critical tests were performed in order to optimize the sensitivity of the system under a variety of analysis conditions. These tests altered the critical time cycles of the ionization, ion trapping, and detection. Various carrier gas pressures were also employed in order to ascertain the overall sensitivity of the instrument. In addition we have also interfaced a thermal energy analyzer (TEA) to the gas chromatograph in order to simultaneously detect volatile nitrogen containing compounds while mass spectral data is being acquired. This is the first application at this laboratory of simultaneous ultra-trace detections while utilizing two orthogonal analytical techniques. In particular, explosive-related compound and/or residues are of interest to the general community in water, soil and gas sampler. In this paper are highlighted a few examples of the analytical power of this new GC-TEA-ITMS technology.

Three dimensional transport benchmark exercise using THREEDANT

As part of the effort to assess the ability to perform three dimensional transport calculations to solve problems in reactor physics, we describe the THREEDANT code and its application to the set of three-dimensional benchmark problems proposed by Prof. T. Takeda. As part of this benchmarking activity, we display some key indicators as to computational performance and efficiency while displaying the sensitivity of the eigenvalue to Sn order and to spatial mesh size in each of the problems. In order to understand what is being displayed, we summarize the solution strategy incorporated in the code. 1 ref., 3 figs.

It was found that these ASME Code examinations and tests are instrumental in revealing indications and defects in welds and plant components. In addition, this study uncovered that fact that some of the Section 11 requirements are apparently not clear and are misunderstood by some of the facilities. Also, the need for more stringent requirements was evaluated and some Code changes are recommended.
