Air leakage in refrigerated vans. Final report

The Air Leakage in Refrigerated Vans Project was initiated by the Department of Energy to assess the impact of air leakage on fuel consumption of highway transport refrigeration equipment. The project, conducted from September of 1977 to December of 1978 collected air leakage data on refrigerated trailers, containers and truck bodies. A Prototype Air Leakage Test Set was developed, designed and constructed to take measurements, and a total of 92 representative vehicles were examined. The results of the study indicate that air leakage causes a 25% increase in the average refrigeration load. However, the majority of transport refrigeration units are equipped with control systems that require the power to be supplied continuously, so that the potential reduction in fuel consumption that can be expected by reduced air leakage is limited. Alternative control techniques and power sources for the control and operation of refrigeration unit components other than the compressor could reduce fuel consumption by approximately 60%.

Alpha Fuels Environmental Test Facility impact gun

The Alpha Fuels Environmental Test Facility (AFETF) impact gun is a unique tool for impact testing /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/-fueled heat sources of up to 178-mm dia at velocities to 300 m/s. An environmentally-sealed vacuum chamber at the muzzle of the gun allows preheating of the projectile to 1,000/sup 0/C. Immediately prior to impact, the heat source projectile is completely sealed in a vacuum-tight catching container to prevent escape of its radioactive contents should rupture occur. The impact velocity delivered by this gas-powered gun can be regulated to within +-2%.

Alternate materials of construction for geothermal applications. Progress report No. 17, October--December 1978

A program to determine if non-metallic materials such as polymers, concrete polymer composites, and refractory cements can be utilized as materials of construction in geothermal processes is in progress. To date, several high temperature polymer concrete systems have been formulated, laboratory and field tests performed in brine, flashing brine, and steam at temperatures up to 260/sup 0/C (500{sup 0}F), and economic studies started. Laboratory data for exposure times > 2 years are available. Results are also available from field exposures of up to 24 months in four geothermal environments. Good durability is indicated. Work at five of these sites is continuing and plans to initiate other tests are being implemented.

Analysis and experimental tests of a high-performance evacuated tubular collector

A high-performance collector based on the use of all-glass, evacuated tubular collector elements is described and analyzed, and supporting experimental data presented. The collector operates with excellent efficiency at temperatures high enough to drive existing air conditioning units, and shows good performance under diffuse light and low insolation conditions. collector efficiency is insensitive to operating temperature, ambient temperature, and wind speed. In addition, air as well as liquid can be used as the heat transfer fluid, with no significant performance penalty. While the equations governing the useful energy produced can be cast in a form similar to that for flat plate collectors, several important parameters are unique in a number of respects.

Analysis of airborne radiometric data. Volume 1. Evaluation of the DELPHI/MAZAS computer code. Final report

Testing and evaluation of the code MAZAS/DELPHI led to the following conclusions: its precision is better than the Window method for the analysis of uranium, comparable for the analysis of potassium, and worse for the analysis of thorium. Its accuracy of MAZAS is consistently better than the Window method when used on simulated data. The accuracy of the average values of the individual gamma-ray intensities obtained with MAZAS is good over the entire energy spectrum for the uranium and thorium spectra. The precision of the intensities of the low energy lines is poor unless 15 to 20 s integration times are used. Results of the analysis of actual flight data for potassium and thorium are very similar for MAZAS and the Window method. Results for uranium using MAZAS and the Window method appear to be different. MAZAS, which measures an average of several discrete gamma-ray components, seems to indicate considerably more airborne radon than the Window method. It is suspected that the Window method is measuring a combination of discrete and continuum components and that this is resulting in analyses that are inconsistent with MAZAS. The computer code DELPHI is an interactive English language command system for the analysis of airborne radiometric data. The code includes modules for data reduction, data simulation, time filtering, data adjustment and graphical presentation of the results. DELPHI is implemented in FORTRAN on a DEC-10 computer. This volume gives a brief set of operations instructions, samples of the output obtained from hard copies of the display on a Tektronix terminal and finally a listing of the code.

Analysis of the economic feasibility of the Kloswall longwall mining system. Final technical report: volume 1

This study was performed to evaluate the economic feasibility of the Kloswall longwall mining system. The Kloswall system utilizes a deep web mining concept. It was studied both to determine its own economic efficiency and to compare it to the economic efficiency of conventional longwall and continuous mining systems. A broad-range of mine scenarios and equipment configurations was studied for each mining system. The principal economic factor used in the analysis was Rate of Return on Investment. This factor was derived through a yearly discounted cash flow analysis. An estimated value for yearly Cost per Ton has also been provided. The Kloswall system is shown to be a feasible concept from an economic point-of-view and to provide an economic advantage over conventional longwall systems in seam heights in the range of 6 to 9 feet. This is predicted to be true even if there are relatively large errors in initial cost estimates for the Kloswall equipment. Additionally, by simultaneously considering the nature of equipment cost variations and production rates, the study was able to ascertain optimal longwall mine layouts for the scenarios studied.
