Advances in the theory and modelling of pollutant-gas washout (open access)

Advances in the theory and modelling of pollutant-gas washout

A program for evaluation of precipitation scavenging as a mechanism of removal of contaminants from power plant plumes has been in progress. This program began with field studies at the Keystone plant in Western Pennsylvania, which led to the development of new gas-washout models and related field studies at other locations. The progress of this program is described and some comparisons of measured SO/sub 2/ washout concentrations with those predicted by reversible and irreversible gas washout models are presented. Recommendations for application of the gas-washout models for environmental impact analysis are made. (auth)

AEC/RECON project at ORNL (open access)

AEC/RECON project at ORNL

The present status of the AEC/RECON project is discussed, with particular reference to the ORNL participation. A little of the history of the project is given, plus some technical description and a user's manual. AEC/RECON is an information retrieval prolect that uses CRT screens for rapid display of results from computerized files. Bibliographic data from Nuclear Science Abstracts and other data bases are available for searching. The project came to ORNL in 1971 with 5 terminals and 150,000 bibliographic entries. Now there are 15 terminals and 300,000 entries. (auth)

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding Big Rock Point Nuclear Plant, Big Rock Point, Michigan, 1968 (open access)

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding Big Rock Point Nuclear Plant, Big Rock Point, Michigan, 1968

The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS), operated for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, was used to perform aerial surveys of several operational and non-operational reactor sites during the summer months of 1968. The data collected on these surveys included aerial photographs of the installations, aerial radiation survey data consisting of exposure rates normalized to 3 feet above the ground plus gamma-ray spectral charts, effluent characterization for operational sites (intensity rates and isotope constituents), and pertinent descriptive information of the installation. This report presents the data collected on the Big Rock Point reactor survey. (auth)

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant, Monroe, Michigan, September 1970

The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS) was used to survey the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant and surrounding area during Sept. 1970. The survey measured terrestrial background gamma radiation and included a plume track of the stack release gases. A high-sensitivity detection system collected gamma spectral and gross-count data. The data were then computer processed into a map of a 277 sq. mile area showing isoexposure contours 3 ft above ground. Results indicated the presence of isotopes normally found in the background radiation throughout the United States. The plume track revealed no radiation above backgrouad levels. (auth)

Aerospace Safety Program: summary report (open access)

Aerospace Safety Program: summary report

Projects in support of the Aerospace Nuclear Safety Program are summarized. The objective of the program was to evaluate the radiological safety of SNAP systems and to develop methods and designs to assure that safety. Projects summarized are analyses and experiments for determining: (1) the disintegration of reactors reentering the atmosphere; (2) the burnup of fuel elements reentering the atmosphere, including ablation and dispersal of particles; (3) reactor criticality conditions and the assurance of subcriticality in water; (4) the behavior of reactors in transient power operation; (5) the nuclear behavior of reactors on impact with the earth and in handling accidents; (6) the assurance of shutdown at the end of the power production lifetime; (7) risks by various exposure modes from different methods of reactor disposal; and (8) thermophysical properties of SNAP fuel materials. Afterheat calculations for the HTGR (open access)

Afterheat calculations for the HTGR

Afterheat rates were calculated for the HTGR utilizing new input information. The new afterheat results are a few percent higher than the HTGR afterheat results previously obtained in the 100-to 10,000-sec time range and are 11 to 15% higher than the previous results in the one-day to ten-days time range. The uncertainties were studied in the time region from 100 sec to ten days. The new results were also compared with calculations at other laboratories. The gamma-ray spectra were computed at several shutdown times for future applications in shielding studies. Previous afterheat calculations for the HTGR are completely replaced and updated. (auth)

Age estimates of stratospheric air (open access)

Age estimates of stratospheric air

It is shown that careful consideration of /sup 32/P//sup 7/Be ratios (both isotopes being generated in the atmosphere by cosmic radiation) not only yields information on the stratospheric or tropospheric origin of air masses. These ratios may also be used to determine the residence time in the stratosphere of tropospheric air that underwent upward transport through the tropopause and re-entered the troposphere at a later date.
