11 - FFTF-LMFBR seal test program, October-December 1973
The objectives of this program are to: (1) conduct static and dynamic tests to demonstrate or determine the mechanical performance of full-size (cross section) FFTF fuel transfer machine and reactor vessel head seals intended for use in a sodium vapor - inert gas environment, (2) develop and demonstrate these FFTF seals or new seal configurations to provide acceptable fission product and cover gas retention capabilities at LMFBR Demonstration Plant operating environmental conditions other than radiation, and (3) develop improved seals and seal technology for the LMFBR demonstration plants to support the national objective to reduce all atmospheric contaminations to low levels. Reciprocating and rotary dynamic testing of seals generated considerable new test data concerning the leakage, compression set, and wear characteristics of various seal types and materials under specific conditions of compression, temperature, lubrication, travel, and surface finish. Both short-term (information tests) and longer-term (demonstration tests) are being conducted.

250-Kg Mirror Coil Development for the Linear Scyllac Experiment
The linear Scyllac theta-pinch machine required mirror coils on each end of the 5-m-long lead coil, which would give mirror ratios of two to three times the 100-kG main coil magnetic field. A pulsed magnetic field of 250 RG was established as a design goal for the mirror coils. Several different designs were evaluated using the 178- kJ, 80-kV Scyllac prototype capacitor bank. Calculations were made to determine the coil geometry for each 250-kG cotl design. A copper-lined, steel-jacketed coil, and an all steel coil were fabricated and tested (4 to 5 cm bores). The types of materials selected for each coli, strength considerations, and fabricating techniques are discussed. The final design of the mirror coils for the 11.2-cm-bore Scyllac machine was established using an all-steel (Maraging type 250) design. An aluminium coil (2014-T652) was built and tested to failure in order to establish data as to the maximum fields that aluminum coils could be subjected to in a typical pulsed theta-pinch evironment. This program and conclusions are discussed. (auth)

Absorption of electromagnetic rays near the critical density. Quarterly progress report, June 1, 1973--September 1, 1973
An experimental study of the interaction of high-intensity ruby laser radiation with hydrogen gas in a free-jet is described. In these experiments both laser intensity and the plasma frequency can be varied. By monitoring several parameters, including incident and reflected power, x-ray emission and the kinematics of plasma growth, the existence of an anomalous threshold for coupling radiation into plasma energy should be determinable. A discussion of the experiment, including a design drawing of the experimental arrangement and the diagnostic instrumentation, is included. (auth)

Absorption of electromagnetic waves near the critical density. Annual report, 1 December 1972--30 November 1973
The program is an experimental study of the interaction of highintensity ruby laser radiation with hydrogen gas in a free-jet. In these experiments, both laser intensity and the plasma frequency can be varied. By monitoring several parameters, including incident and reflected power, x-ray emission and the kinematics of plasma growth, the existence of an anomalous threshold for coupling radiation into plasma energy should be determinable. A discussion of the status of the Calspan experiment and of the status of other anomalous coupling studies at laser frequencies is presented. (auth)

Adding memory to the PDP-9
The University of Minnesota has expanded its PDP-9 memory to the full 32 K word capacity of the machine. The expansion from 8 K to 18 K words, entailing the construction of the Extended Memory Interface, was the most difficult part of the project. The interfacing procedure is described. (WHK)
