At the time the first UO{sub 3} from so-called ``full-level`` Redox runs was shipped from 224U, the % U{sub 235} as determined in 222-S appeared high when compared with theoretical values from the burn-out curve. Close agreement between the 222-S results and % U{sub 235} determined by K-25 on lots 007, 008, and 009, however, indicated that a considerable heel of cold uranium in Redox had been blended with the first ``full level`` material. This explanation has been verified by data collected over the past weeks and provided this report. It has also been verified by the % U{sub 235} found in lots later than 010* (after most of cold uranium flushed out of Redox) which ranged from 0.66% to 0.64%.

100 Areas water treatment specifications

This memorandum discussed review of the data from tests using alum in the treatment of pile process water, and using activated silica as a coagulant aid during period of low water temperature, which shows that this method should be substituted for the present method of treating pile process water in all 100 Areas. It was recommended that the water treatment procedures and specifications attached to this memorandum be initiated as standard practice in all 100 Areas as soon as it is possible to make the necessary equipment modifications and installations.

The essential structural element which differentiates metal chelate compounds from metal coordination compounds, or metal complexes in general, is the existence of some linkage between two or more of the donor atoms in the first coordination sphere of the metal. It is the purpose of the present discussion to examine the influences that this structural factor may have upon the physical and chemical properties of chelate compounds. Examples of well known, simple coordination compounds involving a variety of donor atoms (Oxygen, nitrogen), as well as a variety of electrostatic situations are shown in the following formula. Below each one are listed a few corresponding chelate structures.

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works

Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive increases in activity densities of fish from one year to the next. The levels of radioactivity are not sufficiently high to be hazardous to either the fish or persons eating them.

Accuracy of Approximate Methods for Predicting Pressures on Pointed Nonlifting Bodies of Revolution in Supersonic Flow

Note presenting an investigation of the accuracy and range of applicability of the linearized theory, second-order theory, tangent-cone method, conical-shock-expansion theory, and Newtonian theory for predicting pressure distributions on pointed bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack. Three shapes, cone, ogive, and a modified optimum body, are investigated over a wide range of fineness ratios and Mach numbers. The results indicated that for most combinations of fineness ratio and Mach number, one of the approximate methods will give reasonable results.

The experimentally determined exponential dependence of spontaneous fission rate on Z{sup 2}/A has been used to derive an expression for the dependence of the fission activation energy on Z{sup 2}/A. This expression has been used to calculate the activation energy for slow neutron induced fission and photofission. The correlation with the experimental data on these types of fission seems to be quite good.

An active particle diffusion theory of flame quenching for laminar flames

An equation for quenching distance based on the destruction of chain carriers by the surface is derived. The equation expresses the quenching distance in terms of the diffusion coefficients and partial pressures of the chain carriers and gas phase molecules, the efficiency of the surface as a chain breaker, the total pressure of the mixture, and a constant which depends on the geometry of the quenching surface. Quenching distances measured by flashback for propane-air flames are shown to be consistent with the mechanism. The derived equation is used with the lean inflammability limit and a rate constant calculated from burning velocity data to estimate quenching distances for propane-air (hydrocarbon lean) flames satisfactorily.

Report presenting an investigation in the 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel at Mach number 1.60 to determine the effects of sweep and thickness on the longitudinal characteristics of a series of wing-body combinations with cambered wings with an aspect ratio of 3.5 and taper ratio of 0.2. The results show the effects of sweep, thickness, and the horizontal canard surface on the lift, drag, and pitching-moment coefficients and lift-drag ratios. The lift-curve slope, aerodynamic-center locations, maximum lift-drag ratios, lift coefficients for maximum lift-drag ratio, and drag-rise factor are presented.
