Aerodynamic characteristics extended to high angles of attack at transonic speeds of a small-scale 0 degree sweep wing, 45 degree sweptback wing, and 60 degree delta wing

Report presenting an investigation of a series of wings of various plan forms in the high-velocity field of the side-wall reflection plate of the 7- by 10-foot tunnel at a range of angles of attack and Mach numbers. The results indicated that the maximum lift coefficients obtainable increased with increase in sweep angle and decreased with Mach number at the lower subsonic Mach numbers.

An analysis of the errors in curve-fitting problems with an application to the calculation of stability parameters from flight data (open access)

An analysis of the errors in curve-fitting problems with an application to the calculation of stability parameters from flight data

From Introduction: "It is shown in the body of this report that the solution to the error problem depends upon a more or less arbitrary definition, the only criterion as to the choice of the definition being the usefulness of the solution to which it leads. In this respect, it may be said of the method derived herein that it is not difficult to apply and appears to lead reasonable values of the errors."

Analytical study of static and low-speed performance of thin propellers using two-speed gear ratios to obtain optimum rotational speeds

From Introduction: "The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of two-speed gearing on the take-off efficiency under certain conditions. The present paper gives charts from which the efficiencies can be readily computed for optimum rotational speeds. Also included is a brief discussion of the static thrust of thin propellers, including the effect of camber on the static thrust."

BRIQUETTING OF MACHINED PLUTONIUM TURNINGS FOR RECYCLE TO THE CASTING OPERATION. Final Report-Production Test 235-6

Twenty-four briquettes of Pu turnings were pressed in a He atmosphere and made into eight castings. Six castings were processed to final form and were comparable to normally processed material. Two castings were recy-cled due to causes other than briquetting. Casting y-ieids. (wt. of casting/wt. of briquettes). were approximately 90%; approximately 10% of the Pu in the briquettes remaining in the melting and pouring crucible as skull. (auth)

Buckling of Low Arches or Curved Beams of Small Curvature (open access)

Buckling of Low Arches or Curved Beams of Small Curvature

A general solution, based on the classical buckling criterion, is given for the problem of buckling of low arches under a lateral loading acting toward the center of curvature. For a sinusoidal arch under sinusoidal loading, the critical load can be expressed exactly as a simple function of the beam dimension parameters. For other arch shapes and load distributions, approximate values of the critical load can be obtained by summing a few terms of a rapidly converging Fourier series.

C pile slug rupture detection system

This memorandum discusses experimental determination which was made of the sensitivity and operational characteristics of the modified effluent water beta activity monitor system which is to be utilized at C pile for slug rupture detection. The optimum operating conditions for this system were also determined. A comparison of the performance of the C pile system with that of the existing Hanford type beta system was made to establish the degree of improvement realized through system redesign; this information being of assistance to the Pile Physics slug rupture detector development program. This report discusses the performance of both beta sensitive systems and the parameters upon which improved performance depends. A two ionization-chamber mockup of the C pile system was installed in the near effluent water sample room at H pile and utilized in these studies.

Chordwise and Compressibility Corrections to Slender-Wing Theory (open access)

Chordwise and Compressibility Corrections to Slender-Wing Theory

Corrections to slender-wing theory are obtained by assuming a spanwise distribution of loading and determining the chordwise variation which satisfies the appropriate integral equation. Such integral equations are set up in terms of the given vertical induced velocity on the center line or, depending on the type of wing plan form, its average value across the span at a given chord station. The chordwise distribution is then obtained by solving these integral equations. Results are shown for flat-plate rectangular, and triangular wings.

Corrections for Drag, Lift, and Moment of an Axially Symmetrical Body Placed in a Supersonic Tunnel Having a Two-Dimensional Pressure Gradient

Note presenting corrections for drag, lift, and moment that are derived for an axially symmetrical body placed in the test section of a supersonic tunnel on the assumption that the test section is characterized by a two-dimensional pressure field originating from construction flaws. Assuming irrotational conditions, the velocity potential of the flow around the body is expanded in a threefold manner: in powers of the thickness parameter of the body, in powers of a parameter characterized the inhomogeneity of the basic flow field, and as a Fourier series in the azimuth around the body axis.
