Freezing Point Diagram and Liquid-Liquid Solubilities of the System Uranium Hexafluoride-Hydrogen Fluoride (open access)

Freezing Point Diagram and Liquid-Liquid Solubilities of the System Uranium Hexafluoride-Hydrogen Fluoride

Abstract: "The complete freezing point diagram for the system uranium hexafluoride-hydrogen fluoride has been determined. In addition, liquid-liquid solubilities of these compounds have been measured up to the consolute temperature of 101 C. A miscibility gap starts at 61.2 C. over the compositions range 10 to 80 mole per cent uranium hexafluoride. The lowest melting point of this binary system under its own pressure, i.e. the eutectic, is -85 C."

Chordwise and Compressibility Corrections to Slender-Wing Theory (open access)

Chordwise and Compressibility Corrections to Slender-Wing Theory

Corrections to slender-wing theory are obtained by assuming a spanwise distribution of loading and determining the chordwise variation which satisfies the appropriate integral equation. Such integral equations are set up in terms of the given vertical induced velocity on the center line or, depending on the type of wing plan form, its average value across the span at a given chord station. The chordwise distribution is then obtained by solving these integral equations. Results are shown for flat-plate rectangular, and triangular wings.

Evaluation of operating characteristics of a supersonic free-jet facility for full-scale ram-jet investigations (open access)

Evaluation of operating characteristics of a supersonic free-jet facility for full-scale ram-jet investigations

From Summary: "A supersonic free-jet facility (Mach number 3) capable of accommodating full-scale ram-jet engines has been constructed and evaluated. A 24-inch circular nozzle produces a jet of sufficiently uniform velocity that a good simulation of the engine internal flow is obtained. An annular diffuser placed around the engine recovers part of the total pressure of the jet flow passing outside the engine so that the pressure ratios which must be imposed across the facility to start and maintain the jet are kept to reasonable values."

On Traveling Waves in Beams (open access)

On Traveling Waves in Beams

"The basic equations of Timoshenko for the motion of vibrating nonuniform beams, which allow for effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia, are presented in several forms, including one in which the equations are written in the directions of the characteristics. The propagation of discontinuities in moment and shear, as governed by these equations, is discussed. Numerical traveling-wave solutions are obtained for some elementary problems of finite uniform beams for which the propagation velocities of bending and shear discontinuities are taken to be equal" (p. 359).

The Structure of Turbulence in Fully Developed Pipe Flow

"Measurements, principally with a hot-wire anemometer, were made in fully developed turbulent flow in a 10-inch pipe at speeds of approximately 10 and 100 feet per second. Emphasis was placed on turbulence and conditions near the wall. The results include relevant mean and statistical quantities, such as Reynolds stresses, triple correlations, turbulent dissipation, and energy spectra" (p. 1).

Investigation of the drag of various axially symmetric nose shapes of fineness ratio 3 for Mach numbers from 1.24 to 7.4 (open access)

Investigation of the drag of various axially symmetric nose shapes of fineness ratio 3 for Mach numbers from 1.24 to 7.4

Experimental drag measurements at zero angle of attack for various theoretical minimum drag nose shapes, hemispherically blunted cones, and other more common profiles of fineness ratios of about 3 are compared with theoretical results for a Mach number and Reynolds number range of 1.24 to 7.4 and 1.0 x 10 to the 6th power to 7.5 x 10 to the 6th power (based on body length), respectively. The results of experimental pressure-distribution measurements are used for the development of an empirical expression for predicting the pressure drag of hemispherically blunted cones.

Preliminary Experiments on the Elastic Compressive Buckling of Plates With Integral Waffle-Like Stiffening

Memorandum presenting an experimental investigation of the elastic compressive buckling strength of plates with various configurations of integral stiffening. Some of the configurations tested included ribbing that was longitudinal, transverse, longitudinal, and transverse, and skewed at various angles to the sides of the plates to form a diamond or waffle-like pattern. The results indicate that the waffle-like stiffening is of sufficient structural interest to merit further study of the plastic buckling and fabrications aspects.

25 content of initial lots of Hanford UO{sub 3} (open access)

25 content of initial lots of Hanford UO{sub 3}

At the time the first UO{sub 3} from so-called ``full-level`` Redox runs was shipped from 224U, the % U{sub 235} as determined in 222-S appeared high when compared with theoretical values from the burn-out curve. Close agreement between the 222-S results and % U{sub 235} determined by K-25 on lots 007, 008, and 009, however, indicated that a considerable heel of cold uranium in Redox had been blended with the first ``full level`` material. This explanation has been verified by data collected over the past weeks and provided this report. It has also been verified by the % U{sub 235} found in lots later than 010* (after most of cold uranium flushed out of Redox) which ranged from 0.66% to 0.64%.
