Platinum Deposits of the Goodnews Bay District, Alaska (open access)

Platinum Deposits of the Goodnews Bay District, Alaska

From abstract: Platinum placers were discovered in 1926 in a small area south of Goodnews Bay, in southwestern Alaska. Beginning in 1927, the placers were worked for 7 years by small-scale mining methods; in later years dragline excavators and a dredge were utilized. These deposits are important, not only because they are of high grade but because they are the only commercial source of platinum metals in the United States. This report details the deposits in this district.

Preliminary Digital Model of Ground-Water Flow in the Madison Group, Powder River Basin and Adjacent Areas, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska (open access)

Preliminary Digital Model of Ground-Water Flow in the Madison Group, Powder River Basin and Adjacent Areas, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska

Abstract: A digital simulation model was used to analyze regional ground-water flow in the Madison Group aquifer in the Powder River Basin and adjacent areas. Most recharge to the aquifer originates in or near the outcrop areas of the Madison in the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills , and most discharge occurs through springs and wells. Results from the model calculations indicate that the total flow through the aquifer in the modeled areas was approximately 200 cubic feet per second (5.7 cubic metres per second). The aquifer can probably sustain increased ground-water withdrawals probably would significantly lower the potentiometric surface in the Madison aquifer in a large part of the basin. The digital model could better predict the effects of withdrawals if more accurate estimates of the storage coefficient, transmissivity, and leakance could be obtained.

Digital Model to Predict Effects of Pumping from the Arikaree Aquifer in the Dwyer Area, Southeastern Wyoming (open access)

Digital Model to Predict Effects of Pumping from the Arikaree Aquifer in the Dwyer Area, Southeastern Wyoming

Abstract: ^ digital computer model was used to model an unconfined sandstone aquifer (Arikaree aquifer) in about 340 square miles (880 square kilometers) in southeastern Wyoming. The model was calibrated by comparing observed and calculated changes in the potentiometric surface and leakage from the aquifer along streams during water year 1974. The comparison was fairly good for changes in the potentiometric surface and was good for leakage. The calibrated model was used to predict changes in the potentiometric surface and leakage through water year 1979, assuming no new ground-water development after 1974 and normal recharge to the aquifer. Water-level declines of as much as 14 feet (4.3 meters) were predicted, but much of the area would be relatively unaffected. The total predicted decrease in leakage between water years 1974 and 1979 was about 500 acre-feet (0.6 cubic hectometer) per year; the greatest decrease was predicted along streams closest to areas of pumpage.

Distribution and Movement of Zinc and Other Heavy Metals in South San Francisco Bay, California (open access)

Distribution and Movement of Zinc and Other Heavy Metals in South San Francisco Bay, California

From introduction: The primary objective of this study was to determine the net transport of zinc into the study area from urbanized perimeter, out of the study area across the northern boundary of the study area, and across the sediment-water interface within the study area, all within a limited time period. A secondary objective was to assemble as much data on other trace metals--their concentrations and chemical states in water, suspended solids, sediments and interstitial fluids--as possible within the time and funding constraints of the study in order to describe the existing trace metal conditions in the south bay. Thus the bulk of effort was directed toward evaluating the distribution and movements of zinc, but the data collected on the distribution and movements of zinc, but the data collected on the distribution of other metals is important and is reported here.

Water Resources of the North Coast Limestone Area, Puerto Rico (open access)

Water Resources of the North Coast Limestone Area, Puerto Rico

From introduction: The North Coast Limestone area is one of the two most important ground-water provinces of Puerto Rico--the other being the South Coast Alluvial aquifer. The investigation of the water resources of the South Coast has progressed to the point that at this time (mid-1971) an electric-analog model of the area is being prepared. The hydrology of the North Coast Limestones, however, was never investigated as a whole before this investigation, and, therefore, this study was designed to assess the most important hydrolic features of the area.

Geohydrology of the Anza-Terwilliger Area, Riverside County, California (open access)

Geohydrology of the Anza-Terwilliger Area, Riverside County, California

The Anza-Terwilliger area consists of about 96 square miles (24-9 square kilometers) in the upper parts of the Santa Margarita River and Coyote Creek drainage basins in Riverside County, Calif., about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. This report deals with geology, steady state and transient state of ground water, net depletion of ground water, surface-water flow, precipitation, chemistry of water, land and water use, and gravity data for the Anza-Terwilliger area. The data indicate that the rate of ground-water depletion ha's accelerated since 1950. Pumping depressions adjacent to the Cahuilla Indian Reservation have increased the hydraulic gradient and are.causing water beneath the reservation to flow toward these depressions. Total depletion of ground water since 1950 is about 14,000 acre-feet (17.3 cubic hectometers). Chemical analyses indicate that the ground water in local areas contains concentrations of nitrate above that recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for human consumption.

Operation and Maintenance of a Deep-Well Water-Level Measurement Device, "The Iron Horse" (open access)

Operation and Maintenance of a Deep-Well Water-Level Measurement Device, "The Iron Horse"

Abstract: The deep-well investigative device, commonly called the Iron Horse, has been used primarily for measuring deep water levels in boreholes and wells. The device has proven useful in measurements during hydraulic testing of wells with water levels as deep as 2,600 feet (792.5 metres). The device may also be used for obtaining water samples, sounding depths, and determining vertical fluid velocity. Extensive use of the device at the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration's Nevada Test Site has provided the necessary experience to refine methods for proper calibration and maintenance of the Iron Horse.

A Technique for Estimating the Time of Travel of Water in Indiana streams (open access)

A Technique for Estimating the Time of Travel of Water in Indiana streams

Abstract: Estimates of the travel time of waterborne particles in streams is important for pollution studies and in the event of spills of contaminants. This report provides data for the 16 Indiana streams on which time-of-travel information has been obtained and a means for estimating the velocity of any naturally flowing stream in Indiana with a drainage area of 80 square miles (210 square kilometers) or more. Measured velocity rates compiled from the time-of-travel data collected in Indiana are related to 25, 50, 100, and 200 percent of the average discharge of streams shown in this report. Velocities at these discharges are significantly related to their respective watershed characteristics (average discharge and slope).Generalized relations of the velocities as functions of the streams' watershed characteristics are developed as multivariate regression equations using the data from each of the measured streams.
