Effects of Tip Dihedral on Lateral Stability and Control Characteristics as Determined by Tests of a Dynamic Wind Model in the Langley Free-Flight Tunnel

Note presenting an investigation of the effects of tip dihedral on lateral stability and control characteristics by flight tests of models in the free-flight tunnel. The results indicate that at high lift coefficients, tip dihedral may cause a lightly damped lateral oscillation, which does not occur with full-span dihedral at similar values of effective dihedral and directional stability.

The Development of a Lateral-Control System for Use With Large-Span Flaps

"A spoiler-type lateral-control system has been developed for use on the Northrop P-61 airplane. The lateral-control system is to be used with large-span flaps and consists of a thin circular arc spoiler, linked with a short-span plain aileron located just outboard of the spoiler. This unconventional lateral-control system has been accepted with enthusiasm by the pilots who have flown the airplane" (p. 1).

Turbosupercharger-Rotor Temperatures in Flight

Note presenting temperatures of a turbosupercharger rotor measured in flight for a variety of conditions by thermocouples, the leads of which were brought away from the turbine by means of rotating slip rings and stationary brushes. Methods for Determination and Computation of Flow Patterns of a Compressible Fluid (open access)

Methods for Determination and Computation of Flow Patterns of a Compressible Fluid

Note presenting a well-known method of generating stream functions of an incompressible fluid flow, which involves taking the imaginary part of an analytic function of a complex variable. This paper is specifically devoted to a detailed discussion of performing computations related to obtaining flow patterns of compressible fluid from analytic functions of a compressible fluid. An example is also provided to illustrate the method.

Velocity Distribution on Wing Sections of Arbitrary Shape in Compressible Potential Flow 1: Circulatory Flows Obeying the Simplified Density-Speed Relation

"As a first step toward the computation of the velocity distribution along a wing profile of arbitrary shape in a compressible fluid, the circulation-free flow around a symmetrical profile is treated under the assumption of the simplified density-speed relation due to Tchaplygin, Karman, and Tsien. The velocity distribution problem is reduced to a non-linear integral equation which is solved by a fairly rapidly convergent iteration method. Numerical examples are given" (p. 1).

Velocity Distribution on Wing Sections of Arbitrary Shape in Compressible Potential Flow 2: Subsonic Symmetric Adiabatic Flows

Note presenting an extension of the method of computing the pressure distribution along a symmetrical profile of arbitrary shape given in a previous technical note under the assumption of a linearized pressure-volume relation to the case of an everywhere subsonic flow satisfying the rigorous adiabatic equation of state. The actual applicability of the method depends on the development of efficient procedures for numerical integration of linear partial differential equations with variable coefficients. Tables and graphs of functions needed for the computation are given.

A Simplified Method for Determining From Flight Data the Rate of Change of Yawing-Moment Coefficient With Sideslip

Note presenting a method by which the directional stability derivative, which is the rate of change of yawing-moment coefficient with sideslip angle, can be evaluated for a conventional airplane from flight records of a lateral or directional oscillation. When applied to conventional airplanes flying at low to moderate lift coefficients, the assumptions involved in this simplified method produce negligible error.
