The following documents are progress reports that follow chemical research studies in subjects such as ruthenium tetroxile distillations, extraction-scrub studies of zirconium and niobium, and oxidation of plutonium and stabilization of plutonium(VI) during extraction of IAF solutions.

From introduction: "This report presents the apparent viscosities of supernate-sludge slurries prepared synthetically to simulate the conditions known to exist in the waste storage tanks, but with fission products and plutonium absent."

From statement of objectives: The purposes of the work described in this report are to provide data useful for designing and operating the dissolver solution clarification equipment to be installed in the Redox production plant.

Report describing how the neutralized aqueous waste from the TBP Metal Recovery Process will be concentrated by evaporation to minimize the requirements for underground storage tank capacity.

From introduction: "In this report an attempt was made to summarize the results of recent research on the effective height of smoke stacks. In this summary attention is paid only to the case in which the density of the stack effluent is the same as that of the surrounding air."

The following report discusses laboratory investigations of the suitability of some commercially available limestone for neutralization of slightly acidic distillates.

Report reviewing a study regarding the chemical properties, appearance, texture, homogeneity and slurrying ability of waste metal sludge. The settling rates of sludge-supernatant slurries is also discussed.

From introduction: This report summarizes a study of the composution and physical properties of a number of hydrocarbon diluents together with some generalizations regarding relations between [vapor pressure, density and viscosity] properties.

Report summarizing physical studies on Redox solutions and metal waste solutions, including refractometric investigations.

The following report observes infrared measurements in the region of OH bands, the C2O band vicinity, the low frequency end of the spectrum, and the region of the UO2 band on the system hexone - water - uranyl nitrate.

Introduction: "The adoption of aluminum nitrate as salting agent in the Redox process made it imperative that a method be available for determining plutonium in the presence of aluminum. However, large amounts of aluminum have been found to interfere with the determination of plutonium by the lanthanum fluoride procedure. Previous attempts to increase the accuracy of the lanthanum fluoride method, by precipitating LaF3 from 4 M HF (rather than 2 M), have been successful only when the initial plutonium level was high."

This report covers an investigation made to develop a gasometric determination that can determine 1.2 x 10-(-5) g. of nitrite with a precision (99% limits) of +/- 8%, and discusses how this procedure works.

Introduction: "The need for a method of acid determination which could be used for small samples and easily adapted to remote control led to the investigation of the use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acid in certain solutions. The use of electrolytically generated base for the titration of acetic acid in the presence of nitric acid has been reported (1)."

Objective: "The laboratory equilibrium study RC-E-1 described in this report was carried out to obtain uranium equilibrium curves at various concentrations of nitric acid and of TBP."

Objective: "The observations summarized in the present report were made to determine the stability of ferrous and sulfamate ions and sulfamic acid in RA Column scrub solution (RAS) and in aqueous solution comparable to the RA Column feed tee composition (RAFS). Knowledge of the stability of the reducing agent (ferrous iron) is necessary to properly plan the method of preparation and introduction of this component into the RA system and to assure dependable and reproducible performance."

Objective: The objective of this study is to develop a simple method of either removing the C1- ion from the RAW or converting the ion into a less corrosive valence state.

The reports aims to determine the solubility limitation of concentrations of uranium in the food preparation step of the tributyl phosphate waste metal recovery process, and the subsequent solubilities in the RA column.

This report discusses properties and data regarding the neutralized and concentrated aqueous waste produced during studies of the tributyl phosphate (TBP) solvent extraction process.

Abstract: This report gives the results of a radiochemical analysis of particles collected by electrostatic precipitation from ventilation air of the "B" plant at Hanford Works.

The following report analyzes the nitrogen mustard found in mustard gas.

Introduction: "Evidence of masonite deterioration in test hole plugs was interpreted to mean that a previous estimate of the minimum lifetime of the masonite in a Hanford biological shield might be somewhat optimistic. The importance of understanding the effects of radiations on masonite for both present and future pile shields dictated that masonite be sampled from an operating pile shield and studied. The results and techniques are discussed in the following sections of this report."

The following report examines a rapid method used to eliminate the possibility of explosive perchlorate-organic mixtures in a control laboratory in order to determine radiocesium. These methods include the usage of chloroplatinic acid as a precipitate of radocesium.

A report which intends to acquaint the reader with the planning of the radiochemical laboratory designed for the analytical control of the radiolanthanum process and to define the terminal status of the design of this laboratory and its equipment.

This report discusses the settling rates and properties of 101-U sludge when slurried with increasing amounts of synthetic supernatant.
