Leaching and Precipitation Tests on Grants Ores (open access)

Leaching and Precipitation Tests on Grants Ores

Leaching tests were run on two samples from the Grants area in New Mexico. Uranium extractions of 94 per cent were obtained by leaching Sample 6-1 with solutions containing 240 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 60 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton and by leaching Sample 6-2 with 270 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 180 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton. Cyclic tests were completed using caustic precipitation of the leach liquor.

Preliminary Leaching Tests for the Extraction of Uranium From Various Monticello Stockpile Ores

In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

Metabolism and Distribution of Inhaled Plutonium in Rats (open access)

Metabolism and Distribution of Inhaled Plutonium in Rats

From abstract: "Several different techniques were used to introduce tracer quantities of plutonium into the lungs of rats. When aerosols were produced by atomizing aqueous solutions of the nitrates it was found that approximately 20 per cent of the dose was absorbed and deposited in the skelton [sic] with tetra-, hexa-, and trivalent plutonium. Thus with these compounds, the lungs represent a more dangerous portal of entry than either oral (0.05 per cent) or intramuscular (13 per cent) administration. Tetravalent Pu was eliminated most slowly from the lung, the average half-time during the first month being 15 days. But when citrate was added to complex the Pu, over 70 per cent was eliminated within 1 day. This was accompanied by a deposition of over 30 per cent in the skelton [sic] and over 20 per cent in the liver. Presumably citrate breaks up the insoluble colloid in which Pu exists in the lungs. Complexing with cupferron which, unlike citrate, produces a "fat soluble" compound, greatly diminished the extent of absorption from the lungs. Plutonium oxide smokes which were produced at high temperatures were eliminated more slowly from the lungs (average half time of 30 days during the first month) and …

Nature of Bond and Diole Moment of the LiH Molecule (open access)

Nature of Bond and Diole Moment of the LiH Molecule

A description of the character of the bond as a superposition of homopolar and ionic bonding is a very useful approximation in quantum-mechanical research on the properties of molecules. In the LiH molecule, it may be assumed with sufficient accuracy that the bond is formed by two electrons, since, besides the outer electrons composing the bond, there is only a closed layer of inner electrons in the lithium atom.

Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process

Abstract: Tuballoy can be effectively separated from tantalum filaments by chlorination of the filaments and subsequent distillation and condensation of tantalum chloride. Apparatus for chlorination of filaments and distillation separation in one unit is under consideration. Chemical methods of separation of tuballoy from distillation residues are being tested.

The Production of Leukopenia by Chronic Irradiation of the Abdominal Viscera of the Cat

This report describes an experiment that produced leukopenia in cats through irradiation. It elaborates that irradiated cats had significant decreases in levels of leukocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and lymphocytes. The methods and specific results of the experiment are also given and discussed.

Calculation of k-o in a Uranium-Graphite Lattice

Since the 25 content of the uranium to be used in a MTA multiplying lattice is quite uncertain at present, it is necessary to assume various degrees of depletion in order to estimate the multiplication constant K-o and the production of 49 in an infinite uranium-graphite lattice

Three Group Equations for a Multiplying Medium

In the past it was felt that the easiest way to treat a three group equation for a MTA lattice was to solve it without certain terms. This iterative procedure converged rapidly for a medium with depleted uranium fuel, and in fact, a second iteration was not needed.

Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.

A Study of Efficiencies and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Air-Filtering Media

Removal of particles from air is discussed in terms of three classes of filtering media--air-sampling, respirator, and air-cleaning. Plots of efficiency versus filtering velocity are presented. The pressure drop characteristics of the filters are discussed in terms of initial pressure drops of the clean filters, variations in pressure drop of the individual filters, and comparison of loading rates.
