Absolute Thermal Neutron Determination. Part 2. Absolute Beta Counting of Indium Foils (open access)

Absolute Thermal Neutron Determination. Part 2. Absolute Beta Counting of Indium Foils

Correction factors for the effect of thickness on the selfscattering, self-absorption, and backscattering of beta particles from indium foils were determined for irradiated foils of 0.03 to 100 mg/cm/sup 2/. The data were corrected for the activity produced by epithermal neutrons, self-shielding of thermal neutrons by the foil during irradiation, the backscatter from the foil support, and the contributions of gamma and x rays to the counting rate. The multiple beta spectra of indium produced a minimum in the self-absorption and self-scattering correction curve in the GM detector at approximately 1 mg/cm/ sup 2/ and a maximum at approximately 12 mg/cm/sup 2/. The selfabsorption curve for indium in the 2 pi counter has the expected shape for a beta emitter with multiple spectra. The self-scattering and self-absorption correction factors for a 100 mg/cm/sup 2/ indium foil are approximately 1.5 for a GM detector at 7% geometry and approximately 3 for a 2 pi counter. (D.L.C.)

An Approximate Solution for Axially Symmetric Flow Over a Cone With an Attached Shock Wave (open access)

An Approximate Solution for Axially Symmetric Flow Over a Cone With an Attached Shock Wave

"It is shown that the streamlines in an angular neighborhood of the surface of an unyawed circular cone with an attached shock wave are, to a first approximation, portions of hyperbolas. This fact is used as a basis for the development of an approximate solution in which the shock-wave orientation and the flow field behind the shock wave are given explicitly in terms of the free-stream Mach number, the vertex angle of the body cone, and the ratio of specific heats of the gas. The approximate solution is compared with other approximate solutions for the cone" (p. 1).

Aqueous Uranium Slurry Studies (open access)

Aqueous Uranium Slurry Studies

A summary of the laboratory development program on aqueous uranium slurry fuels for the Homogenous Reactor Project during the period April 1951 through March 1953 is presented. These investigations were devoted primarily to a study of the uranium oxides in aqueous suspensions. It was concluded that U(VI) was most likely to be the stable valence state in such slurry fuels and it was shown that β-UO3·H2O platelet crystals were the stable modification at 250°C. Very pure slurries of β-UO3·H2O platelets, uranium concentration of 250g/liter and average particle size of about 10 μ, had favorable settling rates and could be easily redispersed. Their viscosity and corrosion rate in stainless steel were comparable with those in water. Exposure of these slurries to pile radiation disclosed that radiolytic hydrogen and oxygen gas pressure comparable in magnitude to those of uncatalyzed uranyl sulfate solutions could be expected. Fission products in the irradiated slurries were predominantly associated with the solids. Radiation also tended to promote caking of these solids on the walls of the radiation bombs. Uranyl phosphate and the magnesium uranates were briefly investigated as alternate system but were not found satisfactory. The program was discontinued before the feasibility of uranium slurries for reactor …

Averaging of Periodic Pressure Pulsations by a Total-Pressure Probe (open access)

Averaging of Periodic Pressure Pulsations by a Total-Pressure Probe

Note presenting information on the average pressure indicated by a total-pressure probe subjected to a stagnation pressure that alternates periodically between two constant values. Calculated and experimental data are in good agreement and errors are reduced when the probe design is such as to ensure laminar-flow pulsations in the probe at all times.

Capital and Direct and Indirect Operating Cost Estimates for Mill for Recovering Uranium From Low-Grade Ore With the Higgins Continuous Ion Exchange Contactor (open access)

Capital and Direct and Indirect Operating Cost Estimates for Mill for Recovering Uranium From Low-Grade Ore With the Higgins Continuous Ion Exchange Contactor

The capital and direct and indirect operating costs were estimated for erecting and operating mills of 220 and 440 tons of ore per day capacity. The ores considered contained 0.15 or 0.30% uranium. The processes considered included crushing, grinding, acid or carbonate leaching, and final recovery of the U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in a Higgins ion exchange contuctor with a 5 M NaCl, 1 M NaCl, 1 M NH/sub 4/NC/sub 3/, or 1 M cost estimate have been given due and careful consideration with reference to requirements for a mill of this type. Further detailed information with reference to the construction and operation characteristics of the Higgins ion exchange contactor are given in ORNL reports 1907 and 1918. (auth)

Chemical and Physical Properties of Hi-Cal-2 (open access)

Chemical and Physical Properties of Hi-Cal-2

"As part of the Navy Project Zip to consider various boron-containing materials as possible high-energy fuels, the chemical and physical properties of Hi-Cal-2 prepared by the Callery Chemical Company were evaluated at the NACA Lewis laboratory. Elemental chemical analysis, heat of combustion, vapor pressure and decomposition, freezing point, density, self ignition temperature, flash point, and blow-out velocity were determined for the fuel. Although the precision of measurement of these properties was not equal to that obtained for hydrocarbons, this special release research memorandum was prepared to make the data available as soon as possible" (p. 1).
