Aerodynamic characteristics of 15 NACA airfoil sections at seven Reynolds numbers from 0.7 x 10(exp 6) to 9.0 x 10(exp 6)

Report presenting an investigation of the two-dimensional aerodynamic characteristics of 15 NACA airfoils at four Reynolds numbers. The results indicate that the drag coefficient at the design lift coefficient and the maximum lift coefficient are the most important aerodynamic characteristics and are most affected by Reynolds number changes.

An Analysis of Airspeeds Attained by a Douglas DC-4 Airplane in Commercial Operations During the Early Months of 1947

Report presenting airspeed and altitude data for nonscheduled cargo operations of a Douglas DC-4 airplane between Seattle, Washington and Alaska during February and March of 1947 to determine the probability of reaching or exceeding given values of airspeed and Mach number. The total probability of exceeding a placard never-exceed speed of 266 mph depends primarily on exceeding the speed in descent. The probability was found to be about once in 100 hours of descent or once in 1000 hours of general flying time.

A Class of de Laval Nozzles (open access)

A Class of de Laval Nozzles

"A study is made herein of the irrotational adiabatic motion of a gas in the transition from subsonic to supersonic velocities. A shape of the de Laval nozzle is given, which transforms a homogeneous plane-parallel flow at large subsonic velocity into a supersonic flow without any shockwaves beyond the transition line from the subsonic to the supersonic regions of flow. The method of solution is based on integration near the transition line of the gas equations of motion in the form investigated by S. A. Christianovich" (p. 1).

Direct Current Electromagnetic Pumps

Abstract: "A number of direct current conduction type electromagnetic pumps for liquid metals were constructed. Pumping capacities of over 400 gpm and efficiencies of over 50 percent were obtained. NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."

The Effects of Horizontal-Tail Location and Wing Modifications on the High-Speed Stability and Control Characteristics of a 01.17-Scale Model of the McDonnell XF2H-1 Airplane (TED No, NACA DE336) (open access)

The Effects of Horizontal-Tail Location and Wing Modifications on the High-Speed Stability and Control Characteristics of a 01.17-Scale Model of the McDonnell XF2H-1 Airplane (TED No, NACA DE336)

"An additional series of high-speed wind-tunnel tests of a modified 0.17-scale model of the McDonnell XF2H-1 airplane was conducted to evaluate the effects of a reduction in the thickness-to-chord ratios of the tail planes, the displacement of the horizontal tail relative to the vertical tail, and the extension of the trailing edge of the wing. Two tail-intersection fairings designed to improve the flow at the tail were also tested. The pitching-moment characteristics of the model were improved slightly by the use of the thinner tail sections" (p. 1).

An Empirical Method for Estimating Trailing-Edge Loads at Transonic Speeds

Memorandum presenting an analysis of selected experimental pressure-distribution data at transonic speeds for the purpose of deriving an empirical method which may be used for estimating the trailing-edge loads and bending moments at the design stage. The trailing-edge normal-force and bending-moment coefficients calculated by the derived method follow the general trend of the experimental data and appear to be a guide where specifically applicable chordwise pressure-distribution data at transonic speeds are not available.
