Alamo Area Council of Governments, Housing for the Region - A Three Year Study Design

This report develops a study design in order to investigate and analyze factors such as employment, income, education, and health, which contribute to current housing conditions. The study will also attempt to point out methods whereby member governments can begin to deal effectively with the housing situation from three viewpoints: rehabilitation, maintenance and the halt of obsolescence, and the provision of an adequate supply of new housing.

Comment on Temperature-Pressure Equilibrium Between Dispersed and Continuous Phases of a Material (open access)

Comment on Temperature-Pressure Equilibrium Between Dispersed and Continuous Phases of a Material

This memo calls attention to the fact that the relationship between equilibrium temperature and the pressures in two phases of a material is {Delta}sdT = {Delta}(vdP) , and not, as now routinely assumed by bubble investigators, the Clausius-Clapeyron equation {Delta}sdT = {Delta}vdP . If one phase is discontinuous (subscript "d") and consists of spheres of radius r in a continuous phase (subscript "c") whose pressure is held constant, then the equilibrium temperature will be above the saturation temperature of the continuous phase by an amount ({Delta}T{sub sup}){sub c} = 2 {integral}{sub 0}{sup ({sigma}/r){sub e}}(v{sub d}/{delta}s)d({sigma}/r) and above the saturation temperature of the discontinuous phase by an amount ({Delta}T{sub sup}){sub d} = 2 {integral}{sub 0}{sup ({sigma}/r){sub e}}(v{sub c}/{delta}s)d({sigma}/r)

Effect of ground motion from nuclear excavation: interim canal studies

The effect of ground motion due to nuclear excavation of a sea-level canal at two alternative routes, 17A and 25E, are discussed from the aspects of motion prediction and structural response. The importance of the high-rise building problem is stressed because of its complexity. Several damage criteria are summarized for advance planning of excavation and operation. The 1964 shot schedule and the latest revised schedule are included for comparison.

Experimental Drifts of Juvenile Chinook Salmon Through Effluent Discharges at Hanford in 1968 (open access)

Experimental Drifts of Juvenile Chinook Salmon Through Effluent Discharges at Hanford in 1968

Young chinook salmon held in live boxes were drifted through Hanford reactor discharges in the central Columbia River, with the objective of evaluating the affect of heated effluents on fish survival. No significant mortalities of fish were recorded from 12 drifts during the spring (March--April) when base river temperatures were low, ranging from 4 to 7.6 C. Some mortalities occurred, however, in 3 of 24 drifts conducted in late summer (August--September) when base river temperatures extended from 17 to 19.6 C. None of the mortalities resulted from passage through midstream discharge plumes, which were characterized by relatively moderate temperature increase and short duration of exposure to maximum temperatures. Mortalities occurred only when fish were drifted along the south bank of the river through areas receiving heated water via intragravel seepage from shoreline retention basins and experimental subsurface disposal of reactor effluents. The shoreline areas were characterized by impeded river flow, which restricted horizontal and vertical mixing and prolonged the exposure of drifted fish to excessively warm temperatures. The extent of thermal shock sufficient to cause death in the field is primarily an integrated function of temperature increase and exposure duration, as has been demonstrated in laboratory experiments. The numerous possible …

An Experimental Test of Time-Reversal Invariance inthePhotodisintegration of the Deuteron (open access)

An Experimental Test of Time-Reversal Invariance inthePhotodisintegration of the Deuteron

We present data from a measurement of angular distributions of the reaction n + p {yields} {gamma} + d (1a) for neutrons with energies between 300 and 700 MeV. These data are compared with recent data for the inverse reaction {gamma} + d {yields} n + p (1b). Time-reversal invariance implies that apart from a normalization factor the angular distributions should be the same. We find an intriguing discrepancy in the vicinity of the well-known peak in the total cross section of reaction (1b) and apparent agreement elsewhere. The discrepancy occurs in the shape of the angular distributions and does not depend on the normalization of our data or those of the inverse reaction experiments.

THE MOUNTAIN IRON DIFFUSION PROGRAM: PHASE II SOUTH VANDENVERG: VOLUME 3 (open access)

THE MOUNTAIN IRON DIFFUSION PROGRAM: PHASE II SOUTH VANDENVERG: VOLUME 3

A series of field diffusion experiments conducted at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California are discussed. These tests were designed to provide the necessary data from which an empirical equation, derived by multiple regression analysis, has been developed. This equation is to be used as a range safety tool in support of missile activities on the Air Force Western Test Range at the Sudden Ranch Launch Complex, SLC-6. The field experiments utilized a fluorescent pigment, zinc sulfide, U. S. Radium Corporation designation No. 2210, as a tracer. Appro ximately 500 aspirated filters, located at 1. 5 m above the ground, were installed along concentric arcs at 500, 800 and 1000 m from the source, and along roadways at greater downwind distances. These samplers provided measurements of the downwind time-integrated distribution of the tracer. These data were supplemented by: ground and aerial air concentration sampling; and, meteorological data from several sites. Specific data are archived at the USAF Environmental Technical Applications Center.
