It serves the purpose of a software quality assurance plan, a verification and validation plan, and a configuration management plan. This plan applies to all software that is an integral part of the LDUA control and data acquisition system, that is, software that is installed in the computers that are part of the LDUA system as it is deployed in the field. This plan applies to the entire development process, including: requirements; design; implementation; and operations and maintenance. This plan does not apply to any software that is not integral with the LDUA system. This plan has-been prepared in accordance with WHC-CM-6-1 Engineering Practices, EP-2.1; WHC-CM-3-10 Software Practices; and WHC-CM-4-2, QR 19.0, Software Quality Assurance Requirements.

Commissioning of the LCLS Linac and Bunch Compressors

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a SASE x-ray Free-Electron Laser (FEL) project under construction at SLAC [1]. The injector section, from drive-laser and RF photocathode gun through the first bunch compressor, was commissioned in the spring and summer of 2007. The second phase of commissioning, including the second bunch compressor and various main linac modifications, was completed in January through August of 2008. We report here on experience gained during this second phase of machine commissioning, including the injector, the first and second bunch compressor stages, the linac up to 14 GeV, and beam stability measurements. The final commissioning phase, including the undulator and the long transport line from the linac, is set to begin in December 2008, with first light expected in July 2009.

Progress Report for Annex II--Assessment of Solar Radiation Resources in Saudi Arabia 1993-1997

In 1987, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) signed a five-year Agreement for Cooperation in the Field of Renewable Energy Research and Development (R and D), which has been extended to 2000. Tasks include: (1) upgrade solar radiation measurements in Saudi Arabia; (2) assemble a database of concurrent solar radiation, satellite (METEOSAT), and meteorological data; (3) adapt NREL models and other software for Saudi Arabia; (4) develop procedures, algorithms, and software to estimate solar irradiance; and (5) prepare a grid of solar radiation data for preparing maps and atlases and estimating solar radiation resources and solar energy system performances at locations in Saudi Arabia.

Final Report: Medium Energy Measurements of N-N Parameter, April 1, 1994 - September 30, 1996

Our research program had four main thrusts, only one of which can be considered as measurements of N-N parameters: (1) Finishing the data analyses associated with recent LAMPF and TRIUMPF N-N experiments, whose overall purpose has been the determination of the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes, both for isospin 0 and 1 at medium energies; (2) continuing work on BNL E871, a search for rare decay modes of the KL; (3) work on the RHIC-STAR project, an experiment to create and study a quark gluon plasma and nuclear matter at high energy density; (4) beginning a new AGS experiment (E896) which will search for the lowest mass state of the predicted strange di-baryons, the Ho, and other exotic states of nuclear matter through nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Review of 2XIIB project

A review is given of the 2X project, including project history and recent results, with the intent that both those new to CTR engineering and those people familiar with its progress will benefit. The current 2XII Program plan is reviewed, with emphasis on the major device fabrication underway at the present time. This construction consists primarily of a new magnet for 2XII, and has been designated 2XIIB. The injection of a 800-A neutral beam is described. The final portion of the paper is a progress report and a summary of cost estimates and scheduling. (auth)

Design of Wrapper Integration Within the DataFoundry Bioinformatics Application (open access)

Design of Wrapper Integration Within the DataFoundry Bioinformatics Application

The DataFoundry bioinformatics application was designed to enable scientists to directly interact with large datasets, gathered from multiple remote data sources, through a graphical, interactive interface. Gathering information from multiple data sources, integrating that data, and providing an interface to the accumulated data is non-trivial. Advanced techniques are required to develop a solution that adequately completes this task. One possible solution to this problem involves the use of specialized information access programs that are able to access information and transmute that information to a form usable by a single application. These information access programs, called wrappers, were decided to be the most appropriate way to extend the DataFoundry bioinformatics application to support data integration from multiple sources. By adding wrapper support into the DataFoundry application, it is hoped that this system will be able to provide a single access point to bioinformatics data for scientists. We describe some of the computer science concepts, design, and the implementation of adding wrapper support into the DataFoundry bioinformatics application, and then discuss issues of performance.

Particle dynamics for motion in a non-planar accelerator (open access)

Particle dynamics for motion in a non-planar accelerator

The basic dynamics of a planar accelerator is extended to the non-planar case. This is done using the geometrical concept of torsion and extending the Hamiltonian formalism. A generalized non-planar reference orbit is adopted which introduces torsion in appropriately chosen drift spaces. The parameters of the reference orbit are associated with uncoupled and coupled betatron parameters currently in use.

Update of Time-Dependent CP Asymmetry Measurements in b to c-cbar-s Decays (open access)

Update of Time-Dependent CP Asymmetry Measurements in b to c-cbar-s Decays

We present updated measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed neutral B decays containing a charmonium meson. The measurements reported here use a data sample of (465 {+-} 5) x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory. The time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters measured from J/{psi}K{sub S}{sup 0}, J/{psi}K{sub L}{sup 0}, {psi}(2S)K{sub S}{sup 0}, {chi}{sub c1}K{sub S}{sup 0}, {eta}{sub c}K{sub S}{sup 0}, and J/{psi}K*{sup 0} decays are: (1) C{sub f} = 0.026 {+-} 0.020(stat) {+-} 0.016(syst); and (2) S{sub f} = 0.691 {+-} 0.029(stat) {+-} 0.014(syst).

Atomic Capture of $mu$$sup -$ Mesons in Chemical Compounds and The "Fermiteller Z Law" (open access)

Atomic Capture of $mu$$sup -$ Mesons in Chemical Compounds and The "Fermiteller Z Law"

Experimental studies of the relative atomic mu --meson capture probabilities in the constituents of chemical compounds are described. Fermi and Teller had predicted that the atomic-capture probability is proportional to the nuclear charge of the atomic species weighted by its atomic concentration. This is sometimes referred to as the Fermi-Teller Z law.'' Previous experiments indicated no clear systematics to this capture process, and there are conflicts between the results of several measurements made with the same or similar compounds. In these experiments the capturing atom was identified by detection of either mesic x rays or decay electrons from mu /sup -/ mesons bound in the mesic K shell in the atomic species, In these experiments oxides and sulfides of some medium- and high-Z elements as well as two metallic solutions were used, and a nuclear capture product (neutron) rather than the decay electrons was detected. Results show that among the substances examIned, namely CuO, Sb/sub 2/O/sub 3, PbO, CuS, Sb/sub 2/S/sub 3/, PbS AgLi, and CuAu, the Z law'' behavior is not indicated either in insulators or in metals, although in all cases there is a preference for capturing in the atom of higher Z. If the atomic-capture probability is …
