This paper presents a design chart to aid designers in the selection of a wall thickness for long cylindrical shells having atmospheric pressure outside the shell and a pressure less than atmospheric inside the shell. The chart indicates a conservative value for the minimum wall thickness for a given shell diameter and material when the shell is completely evacuated.

Several high explosive formulations have recently been compared in a series of impact tests where samples of each composition were encased in a test fixture designed in flat geometry mocking an HE loaded artillery projectile. The purpose of the ongoing test series is to determine the relative rate of chemical energy release or explosiveness of several standard and research insensitive high explosive (IHE) main charge compositions. The triggering stimulus is the impact of .30 calibre ball bullets fired at normal muzzle velocity.

The 100 kW plant is a direct contact boiling/direct contact condensing binary system using isopentane as the working fluid. Treated waste geothermal brine from the Great Lakes Chemical Co. (GLC) bromine recovery operation is the heat source. Brine is taken from the GLC Treated Brine Line at 205 to 210/sup 0/F and supplied to the pilot plant via the APL Brine Inlet Line. The brine enters the direct contact boiler (DCB) and vaporizes isopentane. The cooled brine is discharged into the reinjection pond at 135 to 155/sup 0/F. The brine flow rate is 45,655 to 87,030 lb(m)/hr (pounds mass per hour). The chemistry of the brine is discussed. The objectives here are to: (1) evaluate present pilot plant materials selections, (2) identify potential materials problems, and (3) recommend alternate materials for use in future systems. (MHR)

For colliding beams of several species of ions we compare thermal to perturbative quantum chromodynamic contributions for inclusive large mass muon pair production by using a hydrodynamic model to estimate the temperatures of the quark-gluon plasma produced by each species. The production of high energy dimuons with M {approx equal}-4 GeV, will be favored energetically by the quark-gluon plasma. 10 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.

The MC portion of the MH module was stacked using the copper buttons as spacers. Stainless steel bars measuring 3-inch wide by 1/8-inch thick were welded along all the corner edges, except the outer radius edges, where the bars were bolted to plates 1,2,13 and 14. The buttons were then knocked out. Nine strain gauge rosettes were mounted on the model. Three rosettes were placed at various locations on along the bottom or inner radius side. Each rosette was centered in a gap between two absorber plates. The same pattern was duplicated on the opposite side. In addition, two rosettes were placed on the top stainless straps that were bolted down. One rosette was placed on each side, located in the center of the strap and the center of the model. The last rosette was placed on the bottom or inner radius of the model, in the first gap. The included graphs plot stress intensity versus load applied for each of the nine rosetts, and for all three load cases. By means of a computational approach based on classical molecular dynamics, we can begin to form a realistic picture of shock-induced processes occurring at the shock front and resulting from the detailed, violent motion associated with shock motion on an atomic scale. Prototype studies of phase transitions will be discussed. We will also examine the interaction of the shock front with defects, surfaces, voids, and inclusions, and across grain boundaries. We will focus on the critical question of how mechanical energy imparted to a condensed material by shock loading is converted to the activation energy required to overcome some initial energy barrier in an initiation process.
