1/5-scale experiment of a Mark I boiling-water reactor pressure-suppression system under hypothetical LOCA conditions
Experimental results show the sensitivity of hydrodynamically generated vertical loads to changes in the drywell pressurization rate, downcomer submergence, and vent-line loss coefficient. Insignificant effects on peak vertical loads were observed when the vent-line loss was varied. Peak vertical loads can be reduced by adding initial drywell overpressure so that the downcomers are partly cleared of water. Spatial variation of pressure at about the time of vent clearing is seen in comparisons of data from locations along the axis of the toroidal wetwell.

1.06 μm 150 psec laser damage study of diamond turned, diamond turned/ polished and polished metal mirrors
Using a well characterized 1.06 μm 150 ps glass laser pulse the damage characteristics for diamond turned, diamond turned/ polished, and polished copper and silver mirrors less than 5 cm diameter were studied. Although most samples were tested with a normal angle of incidence, some were tested at 45$sup 0$ with different linear polarization showing an increase in damage threshold for S polarization. Different damage mechanisms observed will be discussed. Laser damage is related to residual surface influences of the fabrication process. First attempts to polish diamond turned surfaces resulted in a significant decrease in laser damage threshold. The importance of including the heat of fusion in the one dimensional heat analysis of the theoretical damage threshold and how close the samples came to the theoretical damage threshold is discussed. 2-MW plasmajet facility thermal tests of concrete. [PWR and BWR]
A test was made in the 2-Megawatt Plasmajet Facility to obtain experimental data relative to the thermal response of concrete to incident heat flux. 14.6 cm diameter by 8.0 cm long concrete cylinders were positioned in a supersonic flow of heated nitrogen from an arc heater. The end of the concrete cylinders impacted by the flow were subjected to heat fluxes in the range of 0.13 to 0.35 kW/cm/sup 2/. Measurements included cold wall surface heat flux and pressure distributions, surface and indepth temperatures, ablation rates, and surface emission spectrographs. The test was part of the Sandia light water reactor safety research program and complements similar tests made in the Radiant Heat Facility at heat fluxes from 0.03 to 0.12 kW/cm/sup 2/. A description of the tests and a tabulation of test data are included.

218-group neutron cross-section library in the AMPX master interface format for criticality safety studies
A P/sub 3/, 218 neutron group cross-section library in the AMPX master interface format has been generated from ENDF/B-IV data for 65 nuclides of primary interest in criticality safety calculations. The library was generated with the AMPX modular code system. Procedures used to generate the cross sections and the organization of the library are described.

450/sup 0/F step transient thermal analysis of the LOFT pressurizer surge and spray line piping
The LOFT pressurizer spray and surge line piping was analyzed for a 450/sup 0/F step change in fluid temperature. This transient was chosen to conservatively represent several pressurizer operating transients that had not previously been analyzed. These include temperature transients resulting from a 300/sup 0/F ..delta..T between pressurizer temperature and cold leg temperature, injection of a cooled (70/sup 0/F) slug of stagnant fluid into the hot (540/sup 0/F) spray line piping, and inflow of 100/sup 0/F primary coolant system water into the hot (480/sup 0/F) surge line piping.

2200/sup 0/C fuel centerline thermocouples for the LOFT program
The technology as well as commercial suppliers have been developed for high temperature thermocouples for the Loss-of-Fluid-Test (LOFT) program. Two types of thermocouples were developed and tested. Model B units contained a 1/16-inch OD 24-inch long Mo/Re sheath probe and were capable of temperature measurement to 1550/sup 0/C. Model A units contained a 1/16-inch OD 41-inch long W/Re-augmented sheath probe and were capable of temperature measurement to 2200/sup 0/C.

Absolute dissipative drift-wave instabilities in tokamaks
Contrary to previous theoretical predictions, it is shown that the dissipative drift-wave instabilities are absolute in tokamak plasmas. The existence of unstable eigenmodes is shown to be associated with a new eigenmode branch induced by the finite toroidal couplings.

Accurate determination of impurity concentrations in plutonium metals by statistical evaluation of analytical data
Analytical data from a plutonium-metal exchange program conducted by six ERDA laboratories are statistically evaluated. The objective is an accurate determination of five metal impurities (aluminum, chromium, iron, nickel, silicon) in each of three plutonium metals by using data from four analytical methods. The statistical evaluation yields the weighted mean and its standard deviation for each method, plutonium metal, and impurity, using a procedure that minimizes the effect of outliers by assigning zero weights to the most extreme values and variable weights to the remaining data. Where possible, weighted means from the various analytical methods are pooled. (auth)

Acquisition, storage, retrieval, display, and utilization of computerized data in the LLL data bank of physical and chemical properties
The demand for evaluated numerical data in the physical sciences and engineering, accentuated by the programmatic objectives of the U.S. ERDA, is being met in part at LLL by the data management research project, which is devoted to the creation of scientific data bases, design and implementation of scientific data management systems, and computer communication and networking. The evolution of this program and the LLL computer systems on which it is based are described. 14 figures. (RWR)
