Flight investigation of the cooling characteristics of a two-row radial engine installation 1: cooling correlation

Report presenting flight tests to determine the cooling characteristics of a two-row radial engine at altitude in a twin-engine airplane and to investigate the accuracy with which low-altitude cooling-correlation equations can be used for making cooling predictions at higher altitudes. Satisfactory correlation of the cooling variables was obtained at both altitudes by the NACA-cooling method.

A new device for filtering hydrofluoric acid and other strong acids. Information report (open access)

A new device for filtering hydrofluoric acid and other strong acids. Information report

During the course of a research problem involving hydrofluoric acid it became necessary to filter concentrated hydrofluoric solutions to remove various solid materials. The search for a suitable filter media finally led to the use of a commercially manufactured plastic material known as ``Sponge Teflon`` (polytetrafluoroethylone) which is produced by the DuPont Company. This material, which comes in 1/8 in. sheets, is used primarily as a gasket material in acid lines, and is impervious to all acids, including hydrofluorle acid.

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis VII Respiration andPhotosynthesis (open access)

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis VII Respiration andPhotosynthesis

The relationship of respiration to photosynthesis in barley seedling leaves and the algae, Chlorella and Scenedesmus, has been investigated using radioactive carbon dioxide and the techniques of paper chromatography and radioautography. The plants are allowed to photosynthesize normally for thirty seconds in c{sup 14}O{sub 2} after which they are allowed to respire in air or helium in the light or dark. Respiration of photosynthetic intermediates as evidenced by the appearance of labeled glutomic, isocitric, fumaric and succinic acids is slower in the light than in the dark. Labeled glycolic acid is observed in barley and algae. It disappears rapidly in the dark and is maintained and increased in quantity in the light in C0{sub 2}-free air.

Graphical and Analytical Methods for the Determination of a Flow of a Compressible Fluid Around an Obstacle (open access)

Graphical and Analytical Methods for the Determination of a Flow of a Compressible Fluid Around an Obstacle

"Chaplygin introduced the hodograph method in the theory of compressible fluid flows and developed a method for constructing stream functions of such flows. This method, which has been extensively used in investigation of compressible fluid flows, is limited in certain respects. The expression for the stream function obtained in this manner can represent only certain types of flow patterns. In general, flow patterns obtained in this way cannot represent the whole flow around an obstacle, but only a part of such a flow, and therefore several expressions are needed in order to obtain the whole flow" (p. 1).

Relation of Preignition and Knock to Allowable Engine Temperatures

"The results are given of an investigation of some of the limitations that now prevent increases in the temperature level of engine cylinder heads, and a review of previous work in the field is included to supplement these results. Attention was given, in particular, to the effects of fuel knock and surface ignition on cylinder temperatures and the effects of cylinder temperatures on performance. Data were obtained from a Wright C9GC air-cooled cylinder and from a Lycoming O-1230 liquid-cooled cylinder" (p. 1).

Wind-Tunnel Tests of Four- and Six-Blade Single- and Dual-Rotating Tractor Propellers (open access)

Wind-Tunnel Tests of Four- and Six-Blade Single- and Dual-Rotating Tractor Propellers

"Test of 10-foot diameter, four and six blade single-rotating and dual-rotating propellers were conducted in the NACA propeller-research tunnel. The propellers were mounted at the front end of a streamline body incorporating spinners to house the hub portions. The effect of a symmetrical wing mounted in the slipstream ranged from 20 degrees to 65 degrees setting corresponds to airplane speeds greater than 500 miles per hour. The results indicate that dual-rotating propellers were from 0 to 6 percent more efficient than single-rotating ones; but, when the propellers operated in the presence of a wing, the gain was reduced by about one-half" (p. 319).

Calculation of the Pressure Distribution on Bodies of Revolution in the Subsonic Flow of a Gas Part 1 - Axially Symmetrical Flow (open access)

Calculation of the Pressure Distribution on Bodies of Revolution in the Subsonic Flow of a Gas Part 1 - Axially Symmetrical Flow

"The present report concerns a method of computing the velocity and pressure distributions on bodies of revolution in axially symmetrical flow in the subsonic range. The differential equation for the velocity potential Phi of a compressible fluid motion is linearized tn the conventional manner, and then put in the form Delta(Phi) = 0 by affine transformation. The quantity Phi represents the velocity potential of a fictitious incompressible flow, for which a constant superposition of sources by sections is secured by a method patterned after von Karman which must comply with the boundary condition delta(phi)/delta(n) = 0 at the originally specified contour" (p. 1).
