Wind-Tunnel Tests of the Static Longitudinal Characteristics at Low Speed of a Swept-Wing Airplane With Blowing Flaps and Leading-Edge Slats

Memorandum presenting a wind-tunnel investigation of a high-wing airplane with an aspect ratio 6.75 wing with approximately 36 degrees of sweepback in order to determine the lift effectiveness obtainable with trailing-edge blowing flaps in combination with leading-edge slats. Close to theoretical flap effectiveness was obtained with blowing flaps deflected 45, 55, and 65 degrees at low angles of attack. Results regarding the wind tunnel, take-off performance, landing performance, and comparisons with flight data are provided.

Relative velocities of the flame in a carbon monoxide - air mixture containing either added heavy water or light water were measured in a glass tube. Throughout the range of carbon monoxide - air composition, the flame containing added light water had a faster speed than the flame containing heavy water.

Experimental Investigation of Supersonic Flow With Detached Shock Waves for Mach Numbers Between 1.8 and 2.9

Memorandum presenting results of an experimental investigation of the flow near the nose of plane and axially symmetric bodies in the presence of detached shock waves, which are compared with predictions of theory. The location of the detached shock wave was determined from schileren photographs for a variety of nose shapes over a range of free-stream Mach numbers from 1.8 to 2.9. Results regarding schileren photographs, shock-location parameter, effect of b/T on shock form, effect of body form on shock form, effect of angle of attack on shock form and location, pressure distributions, drag coefficients, and nose inlets are provided.

Flight determination of the effects of rudder-pedal-force characteristics on the aiming error in azimuth of a conventional fighter airplane

Report presenting flight tests to study the effect on aiming error in azimuth of a change in the rudder-pedal-force characteristics of a conventional fighter airplane equipped with an illuminated fixed gunsight. The effect of the modification on the mean azimuth tracking errors was insignificant, but pilots noted that the modified rudder made it tiring to fly the airplane for any length of time.

From Summary: "A flight test has been conducted to determine the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a 0.125-scale model of the McDonnell F-101A airplane for the Mach number range between 0.82 and 1.84. The variation of lift-curve slope with Mach number was gradual with a maximum value of 0.107 occurring at a Mach number of 0.95. The minimum drag coefficient (including base and internal drag) has a value of 0.020 at a Mach number of 0.87. The drag rise begins at a Mach number of 0.90, and at Mach number of 1.10 the minimum drag is 0.070. Above this Mach number there is a gradual increase in minimum drag coefficient to a value of 0.074 when the Mach number is 1.83."

Performance evaluation of reduced-chord rotor blading as applied to J73 two-stage turbine 5: effect of inlet pressure on over-all performance at design speed and inlet temperature of 700 degrees R

Report presenting an investigation of a reduced-chord multistage turbine at design speed and various turbine-inlet pressures from 12 to 40 inches of mercury absolute. At each inlet pressure, the turbine was operated over a range of overall turbine total-pressure ratios; turbine-inlet temperature was maintained at 700 degrees R. The results indicated that no appreciable effect on turbine overall performance was observed over the range of turbine-inlet total pressures investigated.

Report presenting a study of the first stage performance characteristics of the two-stage turbine from the J73 turbojet engine. The reduced-chord first-stage turbine operated at a peak brake internal efficiency of over 91 percent at a stage overall pressure ratio of 1.4 and at 90 percent of the design equivalent speed. The unit exhibited high efficiency over a wide range of operating variables.

Report presenting an investigation of the transonic flutter characteristics of a cantilevered, aspect-ratio-4, 45 degree sweptback, untapered wing with three different pylon-mounted external-store configurations. An additional study was created during the investigation to find a store configuration with a substantially higher flutter speed than what was obtained with the other two stores. Results regarding general comments, the investigation of store types A and B, node-line survey, and the investigation of store type C are provided.

Grain Refinement of the As-Cast Uranium-5 w/o Chromium Alloy by Ternary Additions

Abstract: "Refinement of grain size of the base uranium-chromium eutectic alloy (uranium-5 w/o chromium) by ternary additions is discussed. Thirteen additions to the base alloy were investigated, and three additions were found to exhibit worthwhile grain-refinement tendencies. The three alloys, uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w.o molybdenum, uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w/o germanium, and uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w/o niobium, were heat treated to produce final grain-size structures of between 0.015 and 0.033 mm."

This is the third of a series of reports describing the phases of a study of the wear and galling of autoclavedZircaloy-2 by various bearing surface materials. The first report (1) showed that increasing contact area between the autoclaved Zircaloy-2 surfaces will not prevent scratching. It also showed that metals softer than Zircaloy-2 in general do not scratch it. The second report (2) described how eight metals and alloys were wear-tested on autoclaved Zircaloy-2 as prospects for fuel element support-bearing surface materials.

Fabrication of Heat Exchangers and Radiators for High Temperature Reactor Applications

Two 500-kw fused-fluoride-to-Nak heat exchangers, two 500-kw NaK-to-air radiators, and a 20-tube high-velocity heat exchanger were fabricated for a heat-exchanger development program. A construction procedure, utilizing both inert-arc-welding and high temperature dry-hydrogen brazing, was used successfully on all of the units. The tube-to-header joints were welded and back-brazed; the manifold joints were inert-arc-welded with full penetration; and the tube-to-fin joints were brazed. A detailed description of the fabrication of each type of component is discussed and a cost analysis of the 500-kw units is presented.
