Calculation of External-Store Loads and Correlation With Experiment

Memorandum presenting a theory for evaluating the mutual interference between a wing and tip tank as extended to apply to store-pylon configurations. By using the theory and the flow-field formulas of a previous report, theoretical store-pylon side-force estimates have been made for a number of store-pylon configurations. Results regarding the theory for store-pylon side force, scope of test configurations, contribution of store and pylon to combined load, effect of store spanwise location on the store-pylon side-force coefficient, effect of pylon sweep and store chordwise location, effect of sideslip on the store-pylon side-force coefficient, effect of fins on store side-force coefficient, and interference effects between inboard and outboard stores are provided.

Performance Characteristics of a Normal-Shock Side Inlet Located Downstream of a Canard Control Surface at Mach Numbers of 1.5 and 1.8

The performance characteristics of a downward canted normal-shock side (scoop) inlet located downstream of a triangular control surface are presented for free-stream Mach numbers of 1.5 and 1.8 in terms of total pressure recovery and mass flow ratio for various boundary-layer removal systems, angles of attack, control surface deflections and adverse yaw. An engine operating condition for a hypothetical turbojet engine is established, and the match point characteristics of the engine-inlet configuration are summarized. It is shown that the diffuser performance increases with increased boundary-layer removal and decreases because of the presence of the wake from the forward control surface.

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of geometric dihedral on the aerodynamic characteristics of wing-fuselage combinations with wings of aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.6, and angles of sweep of 3.6 and 45 degrees at the quarter-chord line. Little analysis is provided, but the results indicate that the effect of geometric dihedral on the effective-dihedral parameter is slightly larger than predicted at angles of attack of about 6 degrees.

Tests have been conducted in the Langley high speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel over a Mach number range from 0.40 to 0.91 to determine the stability and control characteristics of an 0,08-scale model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 airplane. The longitudinal-control characteristics of the complete model are presented in the present report with a limited analysis of the results.

Exploratory Tests of the Behavior of Several Materials in a Supersonic Air Jet at 4,000 Degrees Fahrenheit

"Several materials have been tested in the ceramic-heated jet (laboratory model) at a Mach number of 1.96 with a stagnation temperature of approximately 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Test models made of molybdenum were less affected by temperature than titanium, stainless steel, and an alloy of 90 percent tungsten, 6 percent nickel, and 4 percent copper. Titanium and steel burn with highly exothermic reactions when subjected to the 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit air jet" (p. 1).

Report presenting pressure distributions associated with stable combustion of aluminum borohydride in the supersonic stream adjacent to a short, 13-inch chord, and an extended, 25-inch chord, flat-plate model. High-speed direct and schileren motion pictures of the flame and associated shock waves were taken. Results regarding the description of the combustion and associated stream disturbances, static-pressure change at model reference surface caused by combustion, lift forces resulting from combustion, base pressure change caused by combustion, stream-parameter measurements during combustion, and surface temperature changes during combustion are provided.

Free-Flight Tests of 0.11-Scale North American F-100 Airplane Wings to Investigate the Possibility of Flutter in Transonic Speed Range at Varying Angles of Attack

"Free-flight tests in the transonic speed range utilizing rocketpropelled models have been made on three pairs of 0.11-scale North American F-100 airplane wings having an aspect ratio of 3.47, a taper ratio of 0.308, 45 degree sweepback at the quarter-chord line, and thickness ratios of 31 and 5 percent to investigate the possibility of flutter. Data from tests of two other rocket-propelled models which accidentally fluttered during a drag investigation of the North American F-100 airplane are also presented. The first set of wings (5 percent thick) was tested on a model which was disturbed in pitch by a moving tail and reached a maximum Mach number of 0.85. The wings encountered mild oscillations near the first - bending frequency at high lift coefficients" (p. 1).

A unified theory of plastic buckling of columns and plates

On the basis of modern plasticity considerations, a unified theory of plastic buckling applicable to both columns and plates has been developed. For uniform compression, the theory shows that long columns which bend without appreciable twisting require the tangent modulus and that long flanges which twist without appreciable bending require the secant modulus. Structures that both bend and twist when they buckle require a modulus which is a combination of the secant modulus and the tangent modulus.
